This was my first 4th of July with my DSLR camera (got it for Christmas). I am so completely thrilled with the fireworks photos that I took!

We found an awesome place for watching fireworks this year. And the things I read about taking photos of fireworks (recommendations for shutter speed, aperture, tripod, etc.) really worked. Some of those suggestions were in a thread here at SSD, too, so thanks everybody! Thanks for looking and letting me share!

Oh wow Lisa, those all look so professional!! Well done! I wish my digital point and shoot camera could do that ;)

Those are AMAZING!
I was pretty thrilled with the ones my wee little Fuji Finepix took...I can't wait to be brave enough to upgrade to a SLR!

Those are amazing Lisa!! I have had my DSLR almost 2 years and last night was my first attempt at taking fireworks pics with it. LOL I am too scared to DL them and see what they REALLY look like. ROFL After seeing yours I really don't want to look at mine and see how awful they probably are. LOL We were at a great spot to watch them but I didn't bring the right lens and for being the first time taking pics like that I just have NO faith that they turned out decent. LOL Thanks so much for sharing those though....they are amazing! :)

Oh wow Lisa!! Those are just amazing!! You did a fabulous job shooting those!! They really do look professional!!

Those are amazing! I have the same camera and lens that I got for Christmas! I was hoping to take pics this year! But, No! It had to storm all night! :( lol

those are absolutely perfect! I'm so jealous ... I wasn't close enough to try it, and didn't have a tripod besides ... anyway, they are amazing! Thanks for sharing!

STUNNING:thumbup: ...we didn't take the kids to see the fireworks, too much for the 2 little ones, so I am hoping to get soem AWESOME pics at Disney during the fireworks...writing down all of your info {shutter speed, apeture, etc} so I can try to see if I can get some of those same shots...do you have any tips to pass on?

Thanks everybody! :)

I ended up with these settings most of the time last night on my Nikon D40x:

Shutter - Bulb
Aperture - f/16.0
ISO - 100
Focal Length - 18.0 mm
Manual focus

I suppose your focal length (zoom or lack thereof...) will depend on how close you are to the fireworks.

Everything I read said to first of all be sure to use a tripod, and a remote if you have one so that you don't even have to touch the camera once you have it focused, framed, etc. Well, I don't have a remote (or whatever it's called...), so I was just very careful to hold still next to the tripod.

Most recommendations I saw were for ISO 100 (or maybe 200), and to have the aperture set somewhere between f/8 - f/16 or even f/22. I used f/16 the whole time. And I went with the Bulb setting for shutter speed since that was recommended, too. I think it's because you then have manual control from shot to shot over the shutter speed without having to reset it on the camera every time. So I would count as I was holding down the shutter. Now my counting was probably not very precise, but I'd guess I was holding down the shutter anywhere from 5-25 seconds. I tried to vary it. Most of the time I was probably in the 12-15 second range. I just tried to be very still as I was holding down the shutter to reduce the blur, even though I was using the tripod. Oh, and I did read somewhere NOT to use the VR on your lens if you're using a tripod.

HTH!

WOW, Jessica!!! Those are amazing!!! They almost look fake they are so clear and colorful!!!! I NEED A DSLR!!! Off to Best Buy...
