if you were the boss what would you do?

My daughter got a phone call yesterday I think from welfare to ask about one of the people who works at her store. My daughter is asst. manager so those questions she could answer since the store manager was not there. She was specifically asked why the girl does not work more then XX amount of hours a week. My daughter told them she is unavailable to work more hours because she has a second job. Apparently she had not reported that and had asked the store manager (not my daughter) to lie for her...I guess assuming he would be the one to take the call. The girl called my daughter today screaming at her cussing her out then her manager called her and told her she was wrong for reporting to them that she worked a second job that that is none of her business and she should have let him handle it. I have no idea what has been said since she got to work today but she was really upset when she called me because she really needs her job and is afraid she might lose it because of this. I think she did the right thing and that she should report her boss to the general manager because that is really wrong IMO for him to lie for that girl so she can continue getting aid which she would not be eligible for otherwise. Apparently because she lied on her application her aid was stopped. I didnt think it would happen that quickly but I guess so. I am just so outraged that her boss treated her like that. It was not like she intentionally tried to hurt the girl it was a question asked which she answered honestly. They told her she should have said "I don't know"
 
I think your daughter handled it correctly. Good for her! Hopefully her boss will see it her way.
 
I get pretty ticked off when I hear about blatant fraud like that. Without knowing more details, I can't really say whether I'd contact the GM. Is there a company policy in place about who and how those type of calls are handled? For example, most companies I've worked at we've been required to forward those type of inquiries to HR. Hopefully it all blows over for your daughter.
 
Sherri beat me... I was going to say, whiy didn't they contact HR with that question? I would be very uncomfortable if asked my the manager to have to lie to protect another coworker so she could fraud the gov - I hope that manager gets written up!
 
First, I would be beyond livid that the employee thinks she can speak that way with a superior. Second, I would report the Manager for talking to her that way when he was totally in the wrong.
 
Mari my daughter was. She told her she is her boss and she cannot speak to her like that and it is not her fault she is not willing to commit fraud. I havent talked to her since 3 and she had to go to work at 4 so I am hoping that she is ok and that it blew over. But I still think she should report her boss to his superior. I cannot imagine that would be good for him or the franchise owner if it was found out that the manager was willing to commit fraud for an employee

Sherri I am not sure the process they have. I dont honestly know if they have human resources because it is a franchise restaurant she works at now.
 
Ugh. She, for sure, did the right thing. It's absolutely horrible that the girl or the manager were willing to do this! Good for her for telling the truth! I hope it all works out for her and that the pressure that shouldn't be on her in the first place blows over fast!
 
That can be kind of a weird situation. Most places have all kinds of rules about what you can and can't give out as info to anyone, even the gov't. It might be different with franchises but I know in companies I've worked for I would have gotten into trouble for saying what your daughter did about the second job. I'd have been expected to just say 'she isn't available for any more hours' which is fact based on what she filled out on her availability forms. That she had a second job was considered 'speculation' and outside my ability to answer even if I know it for a fact.

I worked in scheduling for a large call center for 3 years and while we had an HR department we occasionally got these calls because we were the contact name the person put on their forms. We were given some training on how to answer them because HR often didn't have that info and would bounce the calls back to us. It was a legal thing, in case we said something that caused problems (custody, welfare, workman's comp) or we were wrong or something and the person decided to sue.

However, until I was actually told what I could & couldn't say, I'd have said the exact same thing your daughter did.

She needs to tell her GM about it
 
If they don't have any rules against releasing that type of information, then I definitely think she did the right thing. Like Stacey, I worked at a restaurant that also had rules that we couldn't say anything basically. Even if we knew for a fact. So stupid IMO because if that is the reason the person wrote on their app, then why it can't be told is beyond me.

But anyway, I feel bad for your daughter - she simply answered the question honestly - she should not be getting harassed by this girl or her boss for not lying. That is sad. :(
 
I would report him to the general manager. Now if he had also lied for her previously so she could get welfare then he could be in a lot of trouble. The girl who lied can be charged with welfare fraud and the manager could also be charged for co-conspiring if he has lied for her in the past.

I agree, I would report the manager to the general manager. He is wrong to cover for a blatant committal of a crime. He needs to be reported and dealt with.
 
well the manager said that my daughter needs to apologize to the girl and everyone at her store knows what happened and they ALL think she was wrong. The general manager knows and is willing to just sweep it all under the rug, And the owner of the franchise does not care what happens at his stores so long as they hit their numbers and they pass inspections. So nothing she can really do at this point. I am just praying she can find another job soon.
 
LOL I am not sure...I told her to say something along that line of thinking though. The more I think about it the more I wish she could just quit her job. I know she can't but if she was able to it would be so nice to turn in the girl, the manager and the general manager.

Unbelievable Jessica! She should totally find a new job. I wouldn't want to work for a company thats policies let people commit fraud!
 
Isn't it disgusting Jessica that the one who is committing fraud is the one who is 'protected' and is expecting an apology?! Ugh!!
 
She should report them all to the proper authorities. Let them fire her, then sue them for wrongful termination. Ha!

Yeah, I know...that would be a big mess. But it's really unconscionable that the store is corrupt all the way to the top!

I would be interested in knowing what franchise this is so I can make sure I DON'T support them when I'm in Flordia in February. :hugs: It's hard to be the only one standing up for what's right in that kind of work environment. You obviously raised your daughter right, Jessica.
 
Oh no! That is terrible. I can't believe they are sweeping it all under the rug AND expecting your daughter to apologize! Honestly, I would do anything possible to not work there again - and turn them in. I mean, that is completely wrong on so many levels. :(
 
Dominos...but this franchise is only the ones in Brevard County (on the space coast).

My daughter used to work for CVS as a pharmacy tech but they would rather have four or five part time employees then one or two full time employees. She got offered the job back at Domino's and I told her she needs to really think hard about it because she worked there before and it was constant issues...customer service jobs often do have a lot of stress but it was not just the customers. But she ended up going there because CVS was scheduling her to work only 4 hours a day and 2 of those hours she lost basically to pay for gas. So it really was only about 15 hours she was getting at that job. At Dominos she was supposed to be asst manager with the option to move up to store manager if a position opened up. She is being paid more per hour there and getting more hours. Unfortunately because of the space program ending work over there is super slow and hard to find.

And thank you :) If nothing else I am proud she did the right thing and was honest. She could have just said I dont know and not gotten involved but she did know and she told the girl and her boss a lie of omission is still a lie. (something I had to remind her of occasionally when she lived at home LOL)
