If you had $8000...

IMHO - after being at a point where we almost lost everything which forced us to become almost debt free (we still had our mortgage).......

Buy your furnace. Put the rest toward debt. Use the government money when you get it and put it toward debt as well.

Debt free feels SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good! We wound up financing DH's truck a year and 1/2 ago and I regret it. Wish we would have stayed debt free. It feels so rewarding. And then you have more monthly cash freed up and can buy things you want outright.

Anywho.....just my thoughts. If it were me that is what I would do. 100%.

this would be my thoughts too as someone in a very similar situation as you (we chose to buy new energy efficient windows with our $8,000 tax credit)... you'll be saving money monthly by getting the energy efficient one and if you get one that qualifies for the energy tax credit you'll have more money to pay off the debt.

I'd replace the furnace and use the money back along with the money you didn't spend on the furnace to either pay down the car or pay off the other debt. We paid off all our debt in June and it was a HUGE burden off our backs. You will LOVE that feeling!

You ladies are so right about how good it would feel to be debt free! We don't have a ton, but its still substansial. We have 3 cards, an overdraft, a loan, etc. They all seem to be maxed all the time! I HATE it.

If I could have that gone, I would be one VERY happy girl!
