A soldier friend of mine died in Afghanistan a few months ago. His wife is a good friend too, and has since moved into my area with her two children (5 and 9). I caught up with her the other day and asked her how she was doing. She said the kids are fine, but it's her that is struggling emotionally. She's worried how this first Christmas will go for the kids without Dad too. She's working, and trying to hold it all together, so doesn't have a lot of time to organise things for the lead up to Christmas.

Although she didn't ask for anything, I want to do something for the kids. Like a daily advent activity thing, and I'm asking for any ideas. My own life is crazy busy leading up to Christmas, so it has to be something that is fairly easy to put together.

Does anyone know of any links to home-based activities/gifts or self-contained packages I could arrange in advance? Ideally with little to no preparation required from the mum, as she is wiped out after a full days work, and may not be able to pop out and do things once she's home. I've already suggested to her to do the 25 Christmas stories idea (wrap up 25 books, then open and read one each day leading up to Christmas).

You are a sweet friend!! I think you have a good idea there ... maybe reading Christmas themed books each night would be a great "together" time and a tradition they could do together ...the book idea could be "reused" every year so it is like an "investment" where what I have listed next would only be good for one year ...

... maybe something like this might be fun ... mine always liked Legos ... and I have found them on sale at K-mart and when Borders bookstore was around ... not sure what you have in your area ... but no prep ... it's just open and enjoy (expensive if you have to buy two though) ... my kids loved it! ...I think I have also seen ones geared towards girls ...

Maybe a little gingerbread house decorating kit? Supplies for an evening of cocoa? maybe a new christmas movie with popcorn and goodies? Maybe make supplies for them to make a countdown to christmas? I've seen some cute ones on pinterest for bearded santas and such.

you are such a great friend to want to do this for them.

you are such a great friend for doing this!!

Maybe making ornaments? They have ready to make kits at stores like a walmart or micheals I love the cocoa and gingerbread house idea... or maybe have premade cookies (or dough) and decorating supplies...
