I want to make a really cool cake

for Max's birthday next month. But it can't be too complicated or I will get lost in the process and end up starting (but possibly not finishing) a layout about the cake that never was.

I have ADD, did I mention that?

And I want the cake to look cool and impress my friends but not actually be too much work. {giggle} Can anybody help me out? Hook me up with a recipe or a site or something?

Or, even better, fly out to Malaysia, MAKE THE CAKE for me, take lots of fun pictures with me, thus enabling me to buy more girly kits, and then let me take the credit? I'll put you up for free. I live on the South China Sea you know.

Hi Kellie, I'd love to take you up on your offer to stay and bake Max's Birthday cake, but um, oh yeah, I have to work or we'll end up homeless and living with you permanently....LOL Anyhow, here is a link to some Birthday cakes that look awesome, but are explained really well, at least I think....:)

Here is one of my most favorite cakes and they even give you the template!

That truck cake is ADORABLE, Tracy! I've got to see how easy it is ... that might be just the thing for my boys this year!

For sure go to Family Fun!
I have gotten some great ideas and have even made more than a few of the cakes...The lego one was a hit-as was the baseball cap!

Family Fun is definitely a great site with cool ideas that are easy to do for the most part. We've done quite a few of them from there, and have they've all been big hits! There are a million different themed ideas, so you're sure to find something to use!

how old is he turning?

i always turn to iheartcuppycakes or bakerella for good ideas! they never steer me wrong! ;)

i also found this:

which isn't too bad, cuz it's just covered in fondant and then you cut out more fondant w/ cookie cutters and then "glue" on!

good luck!
xo

How old is Max? I made a LEGO birthday cake several years ago that took practically no time at all and the kids absolutely loved it! Super simple! I'm not the neatest froster either...but the kids liked it and that is what counts. lol 3 bread loaf pans and a pan of the mini cupcakes (even off the top of the cupcake with a knife)...frost.

oh yeah...and depending on his age...if he's younger...buy action figures or whatever and put on a sheet cake ... maybe decorate a few things to go with it...

i.e. Farm cake...put farm animals on it...then frost some squares (i.e. cut up bought mini cakes) and make haybales with colored coconut on it)...to tie in the theme....

lol, i have always had these visions in my head of awesome cakes. but whenever i try it i always screw them up. i tried freezing the cake before i ice it so that you don't get those crumbs in the icing. still didnt work. i tried 'building' a castle cake for Chloe once; turned out horrible and fell over, lol. i really want to try fondant. i think i could probably do that, maybe. but probably not. the last few birthdays i just head to Meijer and let them do the work, lol. good luck!

Just wanted to let you know that I have taken cake decorating classes and our teacher told us that one of the main reasons that the store bought cakes don't have crumbs is because they plop that frosting on thick before they start spreading it. Makes sense. That is what our teacher told us to do. Try not to beat yourself up over the crumbs. I still get frustrated by some crumbs when I do a cake but I don't want the kids eating the amount of frosting it would take for me to avoid most of them so it's sort of a compromise in my mind. LOL.

Icecream cakes are fun! I made one for my daughter's last b-day. You take a large bowl. Line it with plastic wrap. Then you SCOOP icecream into it until it's full. I did half full, then a layer of oreo cookie crumbs and some chocolate pudding, then more icecream on top. Then you put it back into the freezer. DONE. I 'iced' mine with whipped cream, which I tinted light blue. Then added white whipped cream to make clouds. I found some cute butterfly gummies to put on. Instant sky. :) You could do other kinds of bugs, or toy airplanes, or whatever.

OMG, there are some really cute ideas here! I don't think I could ever pull off making a cute cake like any of thoes! LOL! I leave that up to my mommy! hehe!

Did you take a picture? I'm trying to imagine this...did you take it out of the bowl and invert it on a plate then ice it?

I demand a photo.

I'm not much help cause the Walmart bakery is my friend, lol. But my sister has done may cakes for my kids. We have a party store that rents the cake pans and then you just use a star tip to decorate it with..you follow the colors on the sheet, it's hard to mess up and they turn out cute. You could go to the Wilton site to see the pans that are availabe. But barring that, I am a nother vote for family fun magazine ...they are some of the most creative people I have ever seen.

Amazing cake examples - I am rubbish at cake decorating so I usually make mini cupcakes, pipe a simple swirl of butter icing and then add sprinkles of one shape or another (dinosaurs were popular that year!). There are so many papercase choices and sprinkles of all kinds available by mail order, that you'd be able to find some for whatever theme you have.

Big plus for the individual cupcakes: no chopping the cake into lots of mini pieces for the party guests, they just take one (or two) and go. You can still add candles/ cake sparklers too! Easy peasy :)
