I think I bought too much on DSD...

I just tried to unzip my files, and it says my hard drive is too full...sure enough I check and it says 0% freespace

Luckily, my external has a lot of space, I have just been too lazy to move my digi stuff over.

Oh no!! :(
That is my worst nightmare, as I dont yet have an EHD....
Glad you can just move some stuff over... PHEW!

Just be sure to delete the zips as you are unzipping them, because otherwise it's taking up 2x the space! :) If the zips will all fit on your HD, the kits will too...you just need to rearrange things a bit. LOL!

I am a scared of losing things, so usually I keep the original on my computer, and send the zips to the external for safe keeping (I also back up online  ) so I now have to delete the zips on the external.

Weeeell, if it's saying 0% space available and she hasn't unzipped yet, methinks she best be moving stuff off her HD asap. PS and other programs will run like crap, if at all, unless some HD space is freed up. :)

And, yes, Definitely get rid of zips as soon as you're sure you've unzipped. Those suckers take up a lot of space and there's no need to keep them around.

I wouldn't recommend using the zips as backups. It's not a very stable format.

Weird thing is PS has been running fine, I had no idea I was getting that ful.

i'm like you. I keep the zip in a separate location from the files. But once I do some sort of back up I delete the zips.

LOL, yeah...if she hasn't started unzipping then it's a problem. But if she HAD started, then she could just delete whatever zips she'd unzipped and then carried on...kwim.

Don't mind me. I'm tired. Thinking fuzzy.

Zips are NOT a good backup source. They are unstable (they can corrupt over time, even if you did nothing to them) and don't save ANY space at all. The only reason for zips is so that we're not downloading entire kits one JPG and one PNG at a time.

The only time zips save space is when you've got zips for PSD files. Those babies compress bigtime. JPG and PNG files can't compress much more than they already are, so zips are ONLY to keep the files together in an easy-to-download format.

I am scared of getting that warning some day soon! lol

Glad you have an external.

I delete zips, they corrupt :(

WOW! That is crazy! I am a purger, so I always stay right under 40 GB of scrap stuff... but now that I'm designing that will change since I'll have all my own files and won't want to purge those. lol

Wait.. you're designing now? Coooooool. Although if I was a mint chick I don't think I'd ever try to design so I wouldn't have to leave her team. LOL (you are a mint chick right? I'm not crazy? I can't see blinkies.)

Yeah, I had to quit Miss Mint's team... it was AGONIZING!! :crying: That was the hardest email I've ever sent. lol

dude...this is why my PS is running SOOOOOOO SLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWW...guess I will send stuff to my EHD when I get home...peace of mind...and I should probably clean up my recycle bin as well! do you guys save your LO's as a zipped file once you have uploaded and had them printed? I can't come to terms with deleting them yet, so am looking for a way to save space without getting rid of my PSD files....

I wouldn't zip them, Angie. You could save them as TIFF though, they're smaller.

Here's a few tips for smaller PSD files, though...

Crop the edges off - the stuff that you can't "see" that is hidden off the edge of your page is a HUUUGE space hog

If you're using layer masks (ie using a template, and clipping papers, etc), merge the layers that are clipped (like, merge each paper to the layer below it instead of just leaving it clipped). This way you don't have like 10 full 12x12 paper files open in one PSD, instead of say 10 little strips.

OK, that's all I've got for smaller PSD files, lol. But TIFF are smaller files and aren't lossy either, so that's your best bet. I only save my layouts in TIFF files, though...LOL!

Bree, if you save as a TIFF file can you reopen in photoshop if you want to change something? do you save your LO's that you upload to the web as tiff files as well and what size do you save those at? When I upload my LO"s here they don't seem to be very clear and I can't figure out how to save them and upload so they are clear...help me!

In PS and PSE TIFF files are layered just like PSD files are...so they're completely changeable afterwards.

For uploading to galleries and stuff, I just do regular JPG (save for web) at 600x600 and optimize to be less than 150kb. To get mine looking semi-clear, I flatten the layout, resize to 600x600 and THEN save for web, instead of allowing the save for web feature to do it for me.

I use www.mozy.com It's $4.95 a month for unlimited storage. Your initial backup takes a LONG time, but the peace of mind is so worth it. And it's cheap.

It's free if you have 2 GB or less. I have like 80GB.

Awesome, Thanks so much Sara!! Do i have to zip things to be backed up?
If I back up a kit on there, can I get the whole thing back off later? Sorry for stupid Q's, Im clueless.

Ok, I have a really stupid quesiton...where are the zip files? I've never deleted anything like that. Here's what I do...Save the file to a special "download" file, then I unzip it and put it in one of my categorized "scrapbook" folders. I do delete my "download" folder.

I know when I double click on the file in my download folder after it's downloaded, a screen comes up asking me to unzip it - so I do. But I didn't realize it stays there and I don't know where that is.

Am I making sense? Any help with this?

Good thread! I didn't realize that zips were unstable (or similarly sized to the regular files)! Yikes. I thought I was saving lots of room when I was backing them up instead of the full kits. *sigh* I might check out Mozy too.

LOL, no kidding! I just purged my full kits to make room for the new stuff. I still have plenty of purging left to go, I only managed to empty ~10% of disk space.

Alright, I went through and purged my older products (mostly grabbag regrets...) and moved a bunch over to my EHD (I kept my kits on my computer, and all the extras to the harddrive) and went through and found a bunch of zips I never deleted. And.....I am now at 32% free space!! (71 GB)
