I need convincing

My holiday pay is coming this week & I am trying to convince myself that getting Photoshop CS4 Extended (Student edition) would be a good idea(it is $175NZD compared to over $1000 for the normal edition). I currently use PSE6 and have been using PSE for about 2 and a half years. I know PS has a learning curve but am willing to learn if it means I can improve my layouts.
 
I am not sure about CS4 but I went from PSE 6 to CS3 and I really feel like my LO's improved quite a bit. I really had more options with my shadowing and now that I am exploring more with photography and actions I love it even more. Good luck in deciding.
 
I tell everyone the same thing.. I HATED cs4.. lol. I seriously had it installed for less than a day (the trial thankfully lol). If you can f ind a lower version cheaper-- I'd def go that route instead.

If I don't get it now I am probably going to have to wait a year to 18 months to get it since I won't have more annual leave coming to me until November 2010 & my course finishes in June 2010 which means no more student discount.

I have thought about that route but most of the CS3 versions actually end up being more expensive
 
If one were to want to s hop for CS3, might she do that on ebay legitimately? or where? I don't want to go to 4...didn't like it, either, and know I don't want to shell out for 5.

Couldn't you save the pay you're getting now until the spring? If your course goes through June, you should still be eligible for your discount when CS5 comes out in the spring since I'm assuming that would be before June.

I upgraded from CS2 to CS3 and my only regret was I didn't do it sooner. I don't know much about CS4 but it doesn't seem to make much sense to upgrade knowing that CS5 is coming out before too long.

I am horrible at saving and plus this is the lowest price I have seen it all year -at one point I saw it close to $500.

Also next semester (March to June) I am only studying part time because I am doing one course over summer so I wouldn't be eligible for the cheaper price, I would have to pay about $700 to get the education version instead.
 
Hey Jennifer, my advice:

  • As a scrapper you don't need the extended version
  • I love CS4 (upgraded from CS3)
  • There is a learning curve from PSE to PS, some things are handled differently
  • Go and buy it in the US, the full version there might be currently cheaper than your student version ( I did buy the whole suite which was $AUS 800 cheaper then buying it in Australia!!!
  • Even if CS5 is coming out in April, you as a scrapper will be happy with any of the CS versions!

  • Extended is the only option available as a student in New Zealand
  • With exchange rates it works out more expensive to get it from the USA Photoshop CS4 from Adobe is $699 USD & I don't have that sort of $$$

I agree with all of the above. If the question is: should you upgrade? I would say YES. If the question is: should you get CS4 or nothing? I would say NO. I agree that you will be happy with any of the newer CS versions, and would think that you could get an older version for less than the $$ you're saying.
 
part of it is the exchange rate

Photoshop CS4 - cheapest version I can find here in NZ is $1155
Photoshop CS4 Extended Student Edition is $175

Photoshop CS4 (ebay) is $150USD which converts to $200NZD

I am also a bit weary of buying of somewhere like ebay since I am overseas where as the place that I can get the student edition of PSCS4 Extended I have shopped with 3 previous times.
 
Wow, the differences between countries amazes me every time :blink: I admit, I haven't bought it from the Adobe US shop but another dealer. And I just researched the shop before I purchased. Interesting that you only get the extended version, I just checked - yes same here!

I have bought many times at Ebay, software and all and so far never had a bad experience - but again, I do my research before I buy.
 
I guess part of the reason I am wary more than anything as a previous big ticket purchase from a local store (not well known or anything) went downhill quite fast. They sold me what was a used laptop after claiming that it was a new one, swapped hard drives without asking me when I took it in to them after seeing the blue screen of death 3 months after purchase etc.

In saying that my current copy of PSE I bought through a trader on trademe (NZ's equivalent to ebay) with no problems so I guess it is a bit hit and miss.
 
I love CS4! Some of the features are different than CS2, which I had before, but I think you can turn some of them off if you don't like them.

I would definitely say it's worth it. :D
 
Looks like I might not be getting CS4 anytime soon as my holiday pay might have to stretch a bit after hearing what my hours will be once I go back to work. Currently I am getting anywhere between 15-25 hours per week, I asked to get between 20-30 hours because of losing my student benefit of $150 a week & I get 13 hours so needless to say I am not happy at all but the good thing is I hadn't bought my monthly bus pass yet since all I am going in for now is 2 days a week.
 
I have managed to find a copy of CS3 on an online auction site so will be bidding for that since no one else has & it is $75 cheaper than CS4 Extended student version is. I have chosen to go for a commercial version over a student version for the plain reason if I ever go into designing I can without any issues
