I need Birthday Party HELP!

I just realized that Jack's fifth birthday is a week from Monday and therefore must be celebrated next weekend.

Yeah, I know. I suck as a mom, but in my defense my parents have been here for the last two weeks and I have been a bit distracted.

But now I have nothing else to distract me, and I have no idea what to do for a five year old's birthday party! Can someone please tell me what we are supposed to do from 2-4 next Sunday afternoon?!

Seriously, any ideas would be appreciated.

Chesney's birthday is Thursday and I have a big *fail* after my name in the Mom Book because I did not plan a party for her. This past month has just been too much for me to even think about a party. We're taking her out to eat next weekend, and she and I will make brown and pink cupcakes. I'll probably order doughnuts for her to take to school. So don't feel bad.

First off all who makes the rules when a birthday has to be celebrated? My kids love having their parties a little before (for my Dec birthday girl) and a few weeks after (for my August birthday girl). Set the date for what works for you...seriously there are no written in stone rules for birthday celebrations. The longer the better in my kids' books. Can you do it the weekend after his birthday? If that will help you out then plan it that way. He'll have something to look forward to. :)

What are his interests? I'd plan a party around something he's into and a theme will make it easy for you. Does he love Star Wars - have your little guests come as their favorite character, make light sabers, have cupcakes with stars on top? Cars - set up a race track the kids can use to play with cars,? Legos- put a bunch out and have a building contest or find a pattern online and have the kids make something to take home?

Family party - then just invite your family and ask them to bring a dish (make it easy girl!) have cake and think of a fun family game to play.

Once you figure out a theme then search the web for some ideas on games and activities. Kids that age like time to play so 1-2 games, free play time, cake, presents and an art project would be perfect. You can do this! Call all other moms now and send out the invites on Mon if they need to go to school to get out. For invites - don't stress yourself if you can get to the store just buy some basic ones (what 5 year old "needs" a fancy invite).

Family Fun magazine has some rockin' birthday ideas and games.

If you come up with a theme I'll try to help you out (but I'm going to be in and out all day).

Unless you've already invited people, I'd second going ahead and having it a few weeks after his actual birthday. That gives you some planning time, and there's less present/celebration overload.

For the party itself, you'll probably have an easier time coming up with ideas if you pick a theme (circus, space, whatever). Then you can search online for related games and art projects. If you'd rather do cupcakes instead of cake, you can let them decorate their own. Have fun!

Kel, so I assume when you say party you are talking about with all his little friends? If so, I think I might agree with the others about putting it off. You could definitely still do something fun as a family! We tend to keep our birthdays family and close family friends only (as opposed to all their peers). We love to do something really special to build memories and then do a few small gifts. Like for Caleb's birthday we are going to KL (got tickets on Air Asia free seat sale). We've done nights at hotels, special day trips, etc. SO...depending on Jack and his personality, maybe you don't have to do a big party at all. There are no rules that say you "have" to do it the way everyone else does. Just think about what Jack would enjoy the most and plan that -- even if it can't be on THE day.

It's my DD's birthday this Friday. She's not having a "party" instead she gets to pick 2 friends that will come to the movies with us. Then in the afternoon if it's hot (most likely) then she can invite the same 2 kids plus another 1 or 2 to come over for a swim and some birthday cake. We'll do it on her actual birthday but only because it's still school holidays here.

Well, this is Jack's FIRST birthday party that hasn't just involved family, and he's' turning five. All he really wants for his birthday...

is a birthday party.

It's gonna be fairy tale themed, adn I have little gadgets from Oriental Trading COmpany that my parents brought out for the kids, PLUS they got him a Knight costume. He is gonna LOVE it. We're gonna do it Sunday from 2-4, so we can get by with just cupcakes and no food. (Though all the birthday parties we've been to here have been at McDonald's, and the parents of the birthday child pay for everyone's food! Not us whities.) I have a friend who offered to make cupcakes, and I have these cute finger puppets from OTC that I can put on each cupcake to make it cute.

I've got my shopping list for the party, so we'll be hitting up the Party Store later (oh for a Walmart now!). I just have to plan the games and activities, and fortunately for me Family Fun has a section just for Fairy Tale birthday parties!

We have a playground at our apartment, too, so if we run out of things to do, I'll just throw the kids out there. :)

It should be fun, and the best part (aside from the friends and beautiful son and knight in shining armor outfit) is that we have a friend who has a 50D, and he is going to take pictures for me!

Bring on Sunday!

(and thanks for your kind words and help!)
