I have a new found addiction....

To wheat germ...

Seriously - i think it is my new favorite food! I remember my mom putting it on all our food when i was little, and I used to wrinkle my nose on it... but seriously tonight i'm eating avocado and wheat germ so I must have changed my tune LOL...

My absolute favorite is vanilla yogurt with wheat germ - it is sooooo yum!

so... just incase you were all wondering - Shawna is definitely getting her fiber over here

So do you get the toasted or untoasted?

I remember my dad putting wheat germ in stuff. I should get some. Never thought to put it on an avocado . . .

Meems i had to go look at my jar, i didn't know there were two kinds! mine is the toasted... but now i'm curious what the untoasted tastes like!

Sorry, dude, but I don't eat anything with gross words in it: wheat germ, bacteria pie, pudding off the floor...

Just one of my crazy little quirks... :p

It's good to use for a coating on things like baked chicken or pork chops too. That reminds me I need to add some to my shopping list.

In my grocery store it's usually in the cereal/breakfast foods section. on the very top shelf. Probably would be near oats/oatmeal?

Mmmmm, wheat germ!! My jar's almost empty, lol! I like it on ice cream, yogurt, as a component for breading chicken...yum. I buy the Kretschmer's brand in Honey Crunch. Suh-weet!

YAY! wheat germ for everyone!!!

Yeah i found mine right above the instant oatmeal :) Try it in yogurt Katrina, it is super yummy and makes a yogurt feel almost like a meal :)

Oh Leila - I tried it on icecream the other night, it was soooo good!

Oooh I like wheat germ too but I havent had it for quite a while. Definitely get toasted! A couple years ago I thought I would be all thrifty and get some in bulk- like 5 pounds. Well it wasn't toasted and it was not near as good! I should have just popped it in the oven and toasted it a little but it ended up going bad. I think that was the last time I have had any around. I need to go get me a jar of it now! My favorite is on vanilla icecream!

you cats are kind of freaking me out. now i have to get some of this non-sense next time i go to the market. wheat GERM...really?!?!

"Walk past any health food store and you will no doubt see advertisements for wheat germ. Wheat germ is one of the most nutritional products available. In fact, wheat germ contains 23 nutrients, and has more nutrients per ounce than any other vegetable or grain.

Wheat germ is a part of the wheat kernel. The germ is only a very small part of the kernel, approximately 2 ½ percent in total. The word germ does not have anything to do with bacteria; it simply refers to germination. The germ is the reproductive part that germinates and forms the wheat grass.

Wheat germ is very high in protein. It contains around 28 percent protein and has more protein than can be found in most meat products. The human body needs protein in order to repair tissue damage and to help minerals and nutrients reach our cells.

The amount of nutrients that are contained within wheat germ seems endless. It contains more potassium and iron than any other food source. Also found in great quantities are riboflavin, calcium, zinc magnesium and vitamins A, B1 and B3. Vitamins B1 and 3 are very important to maintain energy levels and maintain healthy muscles, organs, hair and skin.

Another important vitamin found in wheat germ is vitamin E. Vitamin E is a very important antioxidant. It is helpful in preventing the body's aging process and also to prevent heart disease. Vitamin E also helps to prevent blood clots and is needed to strengthen the body’s immune system.

Wheat germ has been found to be very beneficial in order to keep the body in tip top condition. It is used by athletes in their diet to improve cardiovascular function and improve endurance levels. Body builders will also add wheat germ to their diets in order to bulk up and maintain the nutritional levels they need to perform.

You can buy wheat germ from all good health stores and many supermarkets will carry it as well. It can either be purchased in toasted or fresh form. There are also many food products that already contain wheat germ. A number of cereals are made with it, as well as bread and flour.

If you make your own bread or cakes you can easily add wheat germ when baking by using it instead of a small amount of flour. You will find that it has a sweet, almost nutty flavor that is not too overpowering. It can also be added to meat dishes, eggs, vegetables and even yogurt."

Wow...ok...wheat germ. I need it, it's happening. And you ladies are saying it's tasty too?!?!

Oh yeah - I remember my mom would put it over oatmeal back then. It came in a glass bottle with a blue label on it. Oh the things she use to make me eat!
