I am having a complete brain lapse... how do I remove part of an element

When I have two elements stacked together, how do I get one to have the marching dots, then erase the other one so they look like the are woven together? Does that make sense? So if I have a ribbon to wrap around a letter or something.

I haven't done it it so long I forgot how!! I'm using PSE8.

Hmm....I work in CS5 but I think it's probably the same.I highlight the layer that needs to be erased. Then I control click the layer of the element below what is to be erases, to do this I hold down the control key and click on the picture part of the layer not the title part. Then you can just go to your layer that is highlight and you should be able to erase what you want!!!
 
THANK YOU JULIE!! I looked in tutorials before I asked, but only through the "tips and tricks" section... off to finish my LO!

Plus I think if you use a tutorial for a layout this month, its part of the challenges for the portfolio. :)
