I am calling on the photography gods and goddesses!

I got my picture I posted yesterday from my Canon!!! I think it rocks :D :D

I chose my Rebel just because I thought it felt better in my hands.....no other reason then that!!!

Yes, you can change out the lenses on an XTi.

Also, more megapixels really doesn't mean that much. Looking at a 4x6 picture taken with a D40 vs a D60 vs a Rebel XT(i) vs an XSi (when taken with the same lenses etc, like exact same picture just different camera and MP's) you won't be able to tell the difference. It's not until you really blow up pictures (I'm talking poster sized) that mega pixels really make a difference.

it isn't the camera that gives you that type of pic, it is knowing HOW TO USE IT to get that kind of a pic. seriously cameras are like cars you can get a jag but unless you know how to drive it it isn't much good. professionals have this battle all the time between nikon and canon. right now the pros are saying that nikon isn't lasting as long as canon with wear and tear. honestly though i would go with what you are comfortable with. i would NOT buy one without holding it first though!!! personally, i am a canon girl ;)

Lizzy, yes you can get depth of field on the xti. It's harder w/ the kit lens, but you can do it. I would recommend the 50mm portrait lens for DOF pictures... at least that's what Meg keeps telling me. LOL

thats the big con to the d40x and the d60 (correct me if i'm wrong) that you can't auto focus with the 50mm 1.8 lens (which is a cheap lens but awesome!)

I use the 50mm lens 90% of the time, the aperture is wide so it has the ability to give you a really shallow depth of field compared to the kit lens that comes with the camera.

I have the XTi and all of my photos HERE were taken with the kit lens.

I went with Canon because I had a film slr before and was comfortable with it.

do you have the xTi? if so can you interchange the lenses?

I actually just have the XT (a step down in mega pixels) and yes you can change out lenses. I take most of my pictures with the 50mm lens. And I agree with the poster who ever said...it's not the camera that takes good photos it's the nut behind it!!! :D :D :D

Yep I have the XTi and (so far!) I have three different lenses for it - the 18-55mm kit lens, the 50mm 1.8 lens and a 28-105mm zoom lens. You can definitely get the bokeh (blurred background) with any of these lenses and many others that are available. I've had mine for almost a year and I'm definitely still learning but I love my camera!!

Here is a photo of Kelsie taken with the 28-105mm lens -

I don't own a DSLR but thatnks for posting this! I'm hoping for one for my anniversary/Christmas in December! I have a canon P&S w/ manual, so I've been leanind towards the Canon. CONGRATS! So jealous! :)

You can also get depth of field with the kit lens on the Nikon D40 & D40x. I have had the D40x since Christmas and love it! And just like many others here, I also made my final decision on Nikon vs. Canon by trying them out in the store to see how they felt.

I don't have a 50 mm lens yet, but I know it does work on the D40x. You just have to manual focus instead of auto focus. I've done some manual focusing with the lenses I already have, and haven't found it to be that difficult. In fact I know some people that, once they've started using manual focus, prefer manual focus over auto focus.

Good luck with your decision and have fun! I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever one you choose. I know that when I was researching DSLR's I ended up on information overload. I got to a point where I had to stop weighing all of the choices and options and just make a decision ("analysis paralysis" is what my DH calls it).
