how does this happen?

Every single day my son loses his pencil. I give him one and by the time he gets home at the end of the day he says he does not have one. Where the heck do they go? I always stock up when walmart and target have their huge back to school sale. I think I paid 19 cents per pack of 12 pencils this year at one of the stores back in August and bought like 10 packs. I just had to pick up another pack though and gave him a pencil just last night and now he is saying he needs one because he does not know where that one is.
 
give him a pencil grip that way he will know which pencil is his and it doesn't get claimed by someone else. Or.... maybe he will just lose both now LOL
 
I asked him if he was eating them LOL. He is the youngest and really disorganized so most likely he is just leaving them in random places and forgetting where he set it down.
 
LOL Ive thought about doing this. If he looks hard enough he can find a pencil laying around the house somewhere. Heck its the same thing with my pens. buy pens to keep at my desk for writing and to take messages but they mysteriously just dissappear. Nobody ever knows who took them though.

I like the pencil grip idea.
Maybe do something fun to get him to keep track of his own things (and so you don't keep spending $$ on pencils/pens). Like 5 different colored pencil grips, one for each day of the week. For each day he comes home with the right color, he gets a sticker or something.

Seriously, I would NOT be giving him a new pencil every day. That's ridiculous.

Col - I thought the same dang thing!!! I think I would do this. I would tie and tape a long string to the pencil and tie it to his belt loop. I'd tell him that this is it. No more pencils. You loose this one, you are in serious trouble.

Or I'd make him buy them from me. :) Just a quarter or nickle (depending on age).

This reminded me of this story....I remember in gradeschool this kid kept forgetting his lunch. mind you - we were in 5th grade - so right around embarassement time - and his mom came to school dressed in her jammies, rollers in her hair, looked a mess and came right into the class room and exclaimed "Matthew! You forgot your lunch again!!!!". Omg - he could have died. Never forgot his lunch again.
 
yes I agree it is ridiculous. It probably is not everyday but darn close to it. Some of the pencils have broken leads in them so they have to sharpened alot to get a good tip which I guess if you are spending less then 2 cents a pencil you kinda get what you pay for but still I would think a pencil should last at least a week or two.

I had an English teacher (same one for 3 years) who made us by them if we didn't have one, she made a TON of money off me since I always lost mine too.
 
When I was teaching I use to write names on pencils with permanent marker. Each child was given a few pencils to start the year. Each day they earned pennies (fake ones) for behavior and homework and the like. They use to loose their pencils all the time and I was always replacing them. As soon as I started charging them money each time they needed a new one, they suddenly found their pencil most of the time. :)
 
well i haven't had the pencil issue but my son has come home without his hat, his gloves, even his darn tie that should've been around his neck...ok he's 5 but still...

Doesn't work here, you can label it anyway you like and it still goes "missing", I personally think that some of the kids in his class steal things just to see if they can get away with it, even lunchbags have gone missing for a few days. The one exception is clothes :p Lukas is so much bigger than everyone else in his class, he's 7 but he's not much smaller than my 13 year old nephew. I think even the parents would notice if their kid came home in or with clothes 2 or 3 sizes bigger than they went with :)
 
You would think that is true here but my kids had their gym clothes stolen no less then five times while in middle school. Their school requires they wear a uniform for physical education and they tried to tell me I had to buy it from them. They were selling black gym shorts and a grey t-shirt that had their school name on it. They were identical to the ones you could buy at walmart or target so I told them no way I will buy them there for less then half what you are charging and I did that. Several times actually. I finally got sick of it and called and told the teacher they were going to replace it since they force the kids to share lockers and it was the other person who most likely was stealing from them.
