How do you organize your Kindle/Nook

I am acquiring quite a few books, and I'd like some insight on how you organize your Kindles/Nooks/iPads?

Right now, I have it organized by genres, but, I'm not sure I want to do that for series such as my Stephanie Plum series.

I just wanted to get some insight from you all how you organize.

I have all my books in collections for my Kindle and here are my groups:

Romance
Historical Fiction
Mystery/Thriller
Fantasy
Literary Fitction
Sci Fi
Cookbooks
Non Fiction
Reading

That last group I keep the books that I am currently reading in, because sometimes I start a book and then get a new one that I want to read more and when I'm done with that new one sometimes I forget what I was reading and where to find it. Or I start a book and I don't really feel "into it" and I want to come back to it later I leave it in that collection. Then once I finish a book I "remove" it from that collection.

Also once I read a book I "delete it" and it goes into my archived items collection!!!

I've done mine in collections too. I have a question though, if you delete it, can you get it back if you wanted to reread it down the line?

I share my Kindle with DH so right it's My books, his books, and then games. As I get more books, I am sure I will have to re-evaluate.

If I get it from Amazon then yes...they incorporate "something" with their mobi file that allows me to "re download" it anytime and it will still have it's collection "tag(s)" and if I wasn't done reading it then it will open to where I left off. It will also still have all your notes and what not in it.

If I download a mobi file from some other source or a PDF, then I can't archive it I just have to delete it, but I keep all those books and PDF's backed up on my computer (and EHD) and if I ever want to reead it I just have to connect my kindle to my computer and drag and drop the file.

But I don't reead books and the few PDF's I have on my kindle that I want to keep I just keep them within their collection!!!

I keep my books by genre mostly. I don't have enough of any one author to group them that way yet, but should all the Stephanie Plum books or everything by Jasper Fforde suddenly go on sale for 99 cents each I would group them by author. Less than 5 books by genre, more than 5 books by author is sort of how I am planning it

I do collections too. For Large series though I make their own collection. Like Sookie Stackhouse has its own collection. Mostly Genres. I have a few of my favorite authors in their own collection. Like I have a Kristen Hannah collection on mine. It just makes it easier for me.

ALSO, what I have found helpful.....I tend to download several books at the same time. So I don't add them to a collection until AFTER I have read it. That way I don't miss something or get mixed up with what I have or have not read. I read EVERY day and tend to get overwhelmed if I don't do that.

Yes.....I admit I am OCD. I like it! :)

as organized and obsessive about structure as I am..my kindle is a mess! I just have them all loaded on there not organized..just pages and pages of books lol

Right now I don't have too many books on my Kindle but what I do have is mostly the same author. So I have a collection of James Patterson and one of Twilight :)

I only use the Kindle app on my iTouch and didn't realize that you could make collections on the Kindle. Too bad I can't do it with the Kindle app :( I hate the disorganization!

See Julie I used the app on my computer before I got my Kindle and that was also my biggest gripe!!!! After I got my kindle I spent hours sorting my books by collections and it was so so nice!!! I have about 420 books and I need to have a bit of order!!!! :D :D Having the collection feature was worth the price of the Kindle to me!!!!

I need to do this on my Kindle, for sure. My problem is that I sometimes have a hard time deciding what genre books need to go in. But, I like your categories Elizabeth. I'll have to give it a try.

Mine is pretty simple, I have a "To Read" collection that I put all my unread books in. I remove it from the collection as I am reading it so it shows on my homepage and once I am done with it, I remove it from the device so it goes into archives. I guess I have never felt the need to sort it any further.

Contemporary Fiction
Historical Fiction
Non-Fiction
Classics
Young Adult
Children's
Cookbooks
Fantasy
Games
Reference

I also do favorite authors in their own categories and cross reference to what type book it is.

Yes. I'm anal.

Okay - just spent some time organizing, and here are the categories I came up with (kind of a blend of Elizabeth's and Nikki's). Apparently, I'm anal too. :)

General Fiction
Historical Fiction
Classics
Mystery/Suspense
Science Fiction/Fantasy
Biography/Memoir
Non-Fiction
Cookbooks
Children's
Reference
Games

I also have a categories by author if there are a substantial number by the same author. My Kindle feels all fresh and clean now. :)

Praying I get mine this weekend. :) I'll organize by author because that's how I have my physical books organized. I very, very rarely will read something by an author outside my "approved" list of author. I suppose I'll make fiction/nonfiction categories for those.

Trying to pay attention to sales now that we're going to be a 2 Kindle family.

I was just trying to figure this out today! Can you only add to collections on the actual Kindle? I'd like to be able to do it on the laptop.

Thanks everyone! I have mine organized in categories too (using the genres on Goodreads), these are mine:

childrens
classics
contemporary
fantasy
historical fiction
horror
humor
inspirational (this is like self help books etc)
mystery
reference
religious
romance (but may change this since the only thing in there is Kristin Hannah and there are seven of those)
young adult

But, I have nine Janet Evanovich novels from the Stephanie Plum series, and I may just move them into their own category. Right now, I have them in mystery.

I must be anal too, because this is EXACTLY what I do. :) I'll put a book in its genre and also in its author category so I can access it easily either way.
