Hey chickies!

So over the holidays I stumbled into coloring as my newest hobby! I've tried in the past but always got bored and I think it's because I was trying all these complex fiddly detailed images that ended up being tedious instead of relaxing.

NOW... I've fallen in love with this big bold coloring style. The girls got me really nice markers and coloring books for Christmas, and it's been sooo much fun! PLUS, I've always been obsessed with colors and color palettes, so this type of literally "every color under the sun and more" type of thing brings me sooo much joy!

Kristin's thread about crocheting made me think I'm probably not alone in "collecting hobbies" around here, so besides scrapbooking... what other hobbies have you collected over the years?

For me, it's...

scrapbooking
diamond painting
crochet
knitting
jigsaw puzzling
Lego
video games
office supply collecting (no really... I have way too many pens, notebooks, planners, etc.)
sewing
bracelet making for the Eras tour (does this count? lol)

And things I've tried but haven't stuck...

cross stitch
needlepoint
quilling
paper miniature kits
origami
felting

I wish I could say I am a reader... but I'm more of a collector of books than an actual reader.

How about you? Do you collect hobbies? I'd love to see your "collections" haha :D

R

HA I've been on the adult coloring train for about 3 years now. I love art and coloring is such a relaxing fit for me. Right now I'm collecting supplies and books, but also coloring and enjoying all the relaxation it gives me after work.

Looks like you got the Ohuhu markers? I'm jealous, I want that set and haven't sprung to get them yet. lol

I have colored pencils, a nice expensive set and a cheaper set, plus gel pens and two sets of markers, one is alcohol like yours but cheaper and a water based set by Ohuhu.

Welcome to the coloring club!!!

Other than scrapbooking and coloring. I don't have any other creative hobbies.

I am very scattered and I have tried various things but I have a hard time getting things to "stick"

I do really love jigsaw puzzles. Those I find the most relaxing - just hard finding a super comfortable setup! I currently use a lapdesk with an added board to put the puzzle on and it works well just sort of a pain to have out.

I gifted a few book nooks for christmas this year and I kind of want one for my own now! I got the ones on amazon on black friday for a pretty good price, they can be kind of expensive!

I got this one for my sister

There are so many different types and brands, they seem to have taken over.

https://www.booknookworld.com/collections/diy-book-nook-kits
(ignore the prices on this site they are totally marked up :P lol)

They sort of seem like a mix between jigsaw puzzles.. and putting together really small ikea furniture haha. I sort of worry it would be very much like a complex thing and not relaxing at all..

Those markers look really nice - are they the ohuhu ones?

They are the Ohuhu ones! Of course I researched and decided I wanted to put the bougie ones on my list even though I'm just getting started haha :D I'm in the buy what you actually want once rather spend the money on all of the steps in-between type, if I am honest. I LOOOVE them. They are so dreamy to color with!

Katie loooooves those miniature sets KCB! She's a hobby "collector" too. I've bought her a bunch of the sets off Amazon over the past 3-4 years. They really have taken over this year it seems. I saw them at Barnes & Noble this year while we were out Christmas shopping which was wild!

Can't tell what markers you are using, others mentioned ohuhu ones which I've never heard of, they look like the copic markers I used to have, for coloring in stamped images for my hybrid/paper scrapping years ago.

Years ago I tried various hobbies (knitting, crocheting, quilting, cross stitch) but scrapping had been my focus for many years...until lately.

I decided to try my hand at bead jewelry design. I am loving it. I have been creating bracelets/necklaces with chain, copper, elastic and wire. I am having a blast buying supplies and working on designs. Tomorrow I will go to a bead/gem event which will be fun.

OH! My absolute favourite hobby i've ever done was pottery but I stopped going years ago when I started having trouble being out around people (embarrassing really I hate it) What I would give to have my own pottery wheel and kiln. I could sit there for hours. I was still very much a beginner and not good at it but so relaxing (the clean up is a pain though lol)

Cross stitch, diamond painting, quilting, epp....

i try to color but no patience lol.

I want to try pottery and stained glass art this year

My current hobbies are scrapbooking, counted cross stitch, genealogy and jigsaw puzzles with a side of reading when I'm motivated to do that.

Jigsaw puzzles are usually done during the winter months (December, January). I put counted cross stitch and genealogy aside during this time. Scrapbooking is all year round depending on my motivation.

Past hobbies from years ago were latch hook, plastic canvas stitching with yarn and dabbled in knitting.

Photography is another hobby that is ongoing... need something to scrapbook!

I remember my parents dropping me off in the office supply isle at Drug Mart while they shopped when I was just a little girl. I love the supplies!
I also like cookie decorating. I bought two stacked nine-drawer cabinets on wheels to house all my cutters.
And Legos. I have quite the stash that needs to be built.
I used to collect business cards, but I don't think people use those any more.

I'm a collector of hobbies, for sure! And when I get serious about a hobby, I collect all.the.things.

My primary hobbies that I spend a minimum of a day a week doing:
- sewing (both garments and bags)
- photography
- digital scrapbooking

Hobbies I've done and come back to periodically:
rubber stamping & paper crafting
diamond painting
bullet journaling
cross-stitch
crochet
painting with acrylics (mostly folk-art style)

SO fun reading all of your hobbies!

OMG! latch-hook. I remember that as a little girl. Holy cow... talk about something I haven't thought about in actual DECADES!

Oh yes- we scrapbookers tend to try all the things! lol!

  • I've dabbled in coloring too- I just dont have the spare time now with kids busy with sports & activities- but as their lives slow down I can see picking this back up for sure!

  • I'm also an big office supply hoarder- my daughter & I both love all the pretty pens & notebooks!

  • We are a jigsaw puzzle family! Most of our travels we try to sneak in a national park or monument & then get a puzzle to complete later as a family. I agree with Kristin though- it's hard to leave them out- our just sits on our dining room table which is awesome for each of us to do a few pieces at a time- but it does 'take up' the table for meals & such! We then frame them & our loft has all our puzzles hung up. These are just 2/10 we have hanging in that room right now!

  • I am a pretty avid audiobook listener. I listen to books as much as I can while doing any/everything else. I love reading 'real' books too- but again- I don't have much 'down' time and if I do- it's for my scrapbooking hobby!

  • I like to make paper cards & still have SO many supplies for rubberstamping/coloring cards. I do make a batch here & there - graduation time, a birthday batch, etc. I would love to have more time for my card making hobby too! These taco truck grad cards I made last summer were SO fun! We knew too many kids graduating!

  • My daughter & I have gotten into paint by numbers the last few years too. She's got one of each of our dogs for Christmas the last few years so now I'm not sure what we'll order next. They are really cool paint by numbers from real photos. We've framed them for her bedroom:

When I was young, I did cross-stitch, paper scrapping, and sewing. Now I do none of those things. I have read since I was a kid, but otherwise, just digi-scrapping.

I've never thought of myself as a hobby collector, but I definitely am!

Digital scrapbooking
photography
cold process soapmaking
candlemaking
resin jewelry and trinkets
metal jewelry making
3d printing
sewing (mostly when my kids were young - I sewed their wardrobes and it was SO much fun).

My son LOVES coloring and has a huge collection of Copic markers. Lately he hasn't asked for more, but several years ago it was the only thing on the Christmas and bday lists. They are expensive, so he couldn't have them all at once and had to be very choosy about the colors!

Current hobbies:

digi scrapbooking

planners and planner stickers & related products like collecting pens, scissors, papers

cross stitching

those layouts are all so awesome, i love how well documented your hobbies are cheryl!!

latch hook is something I also did as a kid.. i've wanted to try those punch needle things but haven't yet.

as an aside with the fires happening in LA I can't even imagine all the artists and crafters who have lost their entire lifes work of hobbies and art :( irreplaceable things, I was reading about this museum that burned down that was filled with bunny stuff and it's all just gone now.

I love those coloring books. There are some great accounts on insta where the book creators post themselves coloring. So relaxing.

Stationery. I have a hoarding level of post-its and my washi stash has reached "I couldn't use this in my entire lifetime" levels. Mind you, I don't stop buying it. Collector! I love pens, stickers, notepads, planners, etc. My collections:
XR42Bj1.jpg

I love puzzles of all kinds. There's also some great jigsaw and coloring apps that I enjoy when I don't want to break out the physical goodies.

I also enjoy building miniatures and 1:12 scale dollhouses.

I used to hoard stationaries, but don't any more because of the lack of space here.
I do:
digiscrapping
mug & magnet collecting
knitting & cross-stitching (though I haven't been doing it for several years).

Having my own pottery wheel and kiln would be a dream come true! I used to make pottery in high school. I really miss it!

Besides scrapbooking, my hobbies include gardening, reading, photography, cross-stitch, plastic canvas, and crochet. I haven't crocheted or done cross-stitch or plastic canvas for a few years. I really need to get glasses before that can happen. I can't read the darn patterns anymore! When I was younger I used to love to color & do latch hook, too.

I only really have 2 hobbies - reading and digi scrapping. Other activities I enjoy aren't really hobbies just past times - like camping, baking, playing cards, etc.

Love that Robin! All those colors make me happy. I just retired my Color Me Happy mandalas set, but feel free to snag it from my files if you want to play with it.

I feel like one of my hobbies is just collecting art supplies LOL. I have to make myself NOT buy all the colors when I find something new I love. My husband and kids just got me the basic set of Karin DecoBrush markers (the pigment ones) and omg they're so juicy and wonderful.

Aside from the stuff that's tied to my mixed media work, I do also dabble in jewelry making a little. I had done it a lot before my essential tremor got so bad a few years ago, but then after spinal surgery when I could finally do things with my hands again, I really didn't pick it back up much except for making earrings. I don't wear much jewelry, but I luuuuuuve large or long swoopy earrings, so I'm always watching out for things I can use to make more of those. I'll take some photos of some I've made and post them later.

You are such an over-achiever! :p ;)LOL! Love your hobbies and how you've documented them!!

Thank you both!

Kristin, if I didn't scrap it, did it really happen?

I am an over-achiever, Jill! It came from my Mama. I made a 94 one time in math, which was the lowest A you could get at the time. She says, "It's barely an A." I said, "But it's still an A!" Then she pulls out her secret weapon and says, "But did you do your very best?" Ack and egads! She thought so highly of my sister and I and expected the best from us.

Seriously though, most of my creative hobbies/passions are things that I can do that don't exacerbate my pain or that distract me from pain that's out of control. It gives me satisfaction to make something pretty out of a bad situation. And we all have those, right? Each of us has something that we are trying overcome.

I should probably add that one of my hobbies is making the best out of terrible circumstances. :D

I have been back through this thread and it's so fun to see all the hobbies we have in common and/or appreciate.

Robin, I was going to ask which sets of markers did you get? Like from Amazon or another site? And was there a particular color range?

Having the hobbies IS the hobby, lol

Things I feel like I always do or always come back to/would identify myself as a do-er of—
Digital scrapbooking
Knitting
Sewing
Reading
Sourdough

Things I do occasionally or have done/would do again and so have supplies on hand for:
Card-making
Silhouette-using (3-d gift boxes, T-shirts, etc)
Quilting
Crochet
Cross stitch
Coloring (I like your coloring book choices!)
Nature-journaling
Wreath-making
Appliqué/embroidery (Bucilla felt stocking kits)
Misc art projects- usually directed by a video lesson
Wood sign painting
Jigsaw puzzles

Things I want to learn/do:
Hand lettering
Refashioning from thrift store or closet
Dollhouse
Dollar Tree DIY lol

Aside from scrapbooking, I'm really into:
- photography
- knitting (on hold right now due to health and TBR pile)
- reading (173 books last year and that was skewed by 1000+ page Stephen King books)
- stargazing (the photo from this page hangs over my desk as a 10x30" metallic print)
- collecting office supplies, especially Flair pens

I did that with my colored pencils. I got the Prisma color full set when I started coloring. I wasn't sure about using alcohol markers, so I think that's why I didn't take the plunge on those. But now that I've been using some and have the hang of them, they are coming..... :p

I have a set of prismacolors too Kiana! I used them back in university and they are the best! They last for years and years and the color is incredible. Sadly I left them behind in my "art room" when I moved away from home in my 20s and they were lost to time, so I bought a new set several years ago (during the frustrating "too detailed" gave up coloring phase) on PrimeDay and I remember thinking it was the greatest PrimeDay find ever!

Cheryl... these are the markers I have, but they went viral on TikTok so they're REALLY hard to get right now. I have the 320 set because you know... ALL the colors haha :D It's honestly probably TOO many colors though and after swatching them, there are a lot of shades that are almost splitting hairs in terms of differences, so you probably dont "need" the huge set.
