Help! Pulling a loose tooth...

Yikes! We had an unsuccesful first attempt to pull my son's first loose tooth tonight. It's been loose about 3 days and it seems ready... It wiggles forward quite a bit, but not backward. I don't remember how my parents pulled my teeth. I do remember pulling them myself at times... I liked to do it myself for some reason.

Tonight I used a baby washcloth and got a grip on the tooth and yanked what seemed to be hard, but no luck.

How long should it be loose? How loose should it be before we pull it? Any good tips? I don't think he will want to go another day with it loose, he says it hurts when he eats. And he's looking forward to the tooth fairy!
 
I do remember with my first loose tooth, my parents insisted on pulling it, but the next one didn't grow in. They had tied it to a string and then to a piano thing that covers the keys and then slammed it down. They finally took me to the dentist and he had to cut a window into my gum cause it was pulled too soon, I guess. After that, they just let them get loose enough on their own and let me pull them. I did another time let my cousins pull it out by tying it to a string and then to the screen door and then slamming it. That one worked out ok though. lol

Max ate an apple and his came out, and we didn't even know it was loose! It took about ten days for the next one to fall out after we noticed it was loose, and it, too, came out while he was eating.
 
Cheyanne always pulled her own when she felt they were ready - LOL. She would get to the point where she couldn't take it any more because it hurt to eat and she would work it and work it, pushing it back and forth until it came out. At 12 she still has 1 more tooth to lose and she's been working on that one for a couple weeks now :D
 
I didn't even try to pull DS's..he's lost 4 total so far and he worked them all out by himself eventually. One just literally fell out of his mouth when he leaned over one day lol. So they will fall out on their own and to me that's way less traumatic for us both lol
 
I remember my dad pulling mine with a tissue, but only after I was crying from the pain anyway. Some just fell out on their own or as I was wiggling.
 
Yep. We've never pulled any teeth here. We always let them come out on their own. Sean did pull one out himself, but it was really super loose so I don't think he had to pull too hard.
 
Oh dear.... so, I guess we tried to pull it way too soon! Yikes... I feel bad now. Poor boy was willing to let me pull it, but it did hurt him last night. Not doing that again tonight! I am in favor of letting it come out on it's own, and maybe only pulling it when it's dangling there. Or even better, having Ben pull it by himself. :) Now to go seek out some cute tooth-themed kits to scrap with!!! :D
 
My DS' have come out while eating. One time at school, it was even hanging on his lip while he was eating a banana and a friend told him it came out! Another time it came out brushing. I ditto the recommendation to let it come out when it's ready -- seems to be less painful that way, because my DS has never had any pain at all.
 
Yikes! This whole thread is giving me the shivers! I think we may have pulled one of my kids' teeth, and that was because it was really annoying him. Besides that, they either fell out on their own or the boys pulled them themselves.

I hope it comes out soon, Brook.

I know... it's really giving me the heebie jeebies too!!! LOL! Especially the stories of typing the tooth to something and slamming whatever. That method just seems like torture to me!! :w00t:
 
I think those teeth are actually stuck in there pretty good! I had to have one of my son's extracted because the new one wasn't pushing it out. It was loose, but there was no way I could've pulled it out on my own without a pair of pliers! :w00t:
 
oh, why did I open this thread? The whole pulling teeth has totally creep me out... haha... It will be a matter of months before having to deal with kiddo's teeth... so not looking forward to it. In some ways I hope he takes after me - I didn't have problems with my teeth coming out - Lord knows my mom would not have touched it (loose teeth totally grosses her out)... Both my hubby and his brother had to have all their baby teeth pulled - the new teeth came in behind them...
 
We always just let them fall out. When I was a kid, I wiggled it around myself a ton until they came out, and that is how I've done it with all my kiddos. Two of my boys have had perms come in behind the baby teeth. My oldest boy had his pulled, and my younger one has an appointment to get his pulled in a couple months if it doesn't fall out on its own.
 
Usually L.J.'s just come out on their own, but he did have one that was literally hanging on by a thread and my hubby pulled it out with a tissue. You would have thought we were yanking his tongue out or something with all the drama that ensued. We won't ever do that again.

His last one he lost biting into an apple.
 
I remember as a kid, pulling on one of my teeth. It hurt quite a bit because I pulled it too soon, and the yucky squishy root was still hanging down. It took a couple days for the root to come out. After that I just let them fall out on their own!

My son is 7 1/2 and still hasn't lost any teeth. Once in a while I check them to see if they're loose but no luck. I can't wait to get some missing-teeth pics!
 
Jason's two bottom teeth have been lose for a few weeks but they are not ready to come out yet. I encourage him to wiggle them but we won't pull them out unless they are dangling by a "thread".
 
I had to pull my 6 year old's second loose tooth... she had her adult tooth coming up behind it, but it was far back from the other one and I was concerned it wouldn't come in well. She worked on it quite a bit, and then I posted to FB and someone recommended numbing the gum with ice and then I used a paper towel and pulled straight up on it, and it came out. It DID bleed, but her first tooth she accidentally pulled out herself and it bled even worse plus tore a hunk out of her gum, so me pulling it was actually less traumatic! But the dentist told me that its usually just the bottom ones that need a bit of help--- I had read that if there is nothing pushing from underneath the roots might not dissolve? But the top ones usually come out differently.

So I guess my policy is to give a little help if needed, if you have a child whose teeth don't come out easily, especially on the bottom. With my oldest hers all came out very easily, but it's a family thing from my dh's side that baby teeth are super slow to fall out and I think my 6 yo has that trait. The good news is her bottom tooth that was far back has moved forward! :)
