Help me think of something nice to do for my hubby

My poor hubby is stressed out. He has a few things going on at work that are stressful and on his mind a lot. He has a church responsibility that is aggravating at times. He's been grinding his teeth in his sleep - a sure sign that he's stressed, and something that he hasn't done for years, even in the midst of some serious anxiety last year. But, lately he's been more involved and supportive of the stuff I deal with everyday at home. So, I've been thinking that I would like to do something for him just to show him that I've noticed everything and that I appreciate him . . . just to give him a little relaxation in the midst of everything.

Here's the problem - he has no hobbies and no friends that he keeps in contact with on a regular basis. I would arrange a guy's night out, but he just doesn't have anyone to do that with. :(

So, hit me with any ideas of things I could do for him (not romantical things, just stuff where he can get a way and decompress). :D

I bought a leather journal at Barnes and Noble that when I notice my husband is having a hard day I will write him a note or if he does something really nice for me I write in it. Then sometimes for no reason at all I write a letter. He knows I wrote in it because I leave it on his pillow for him after Im done. He really loves reading it and I think the letters help me too because sometimes just saying thank you or I love you isn't enough.

Another idea is to maybe try to fish an idea out of someone of something he once enjoyed (asking one of his family members or good friends) and get him something to get him back into that. Like maybe he might want to build a model airplane or car or just go to the toy store and get one of those cool little race cars (my husband and son used to love to play with them together). Even men I think cant resist remote control cars LOL

What about a weekend away at the beach or something? No TV, no phones, just relaxed family time.

I'm thinking this is a GREAT idea! I may do this for my hubby too. :)

Does he read? Maybe get him some books or a kindle or something along those lines...my hubby absolutely LOVES his kindle fire and likes to relax and read or surf the net right on that.

Music also helps my hubby to relax, maybe get him a few cd's/mp3's for his iPod or make your own with songs you know he'd like/relax him.

I know that when I'm stress my DH will soak, pumice, scrub & lotion up my feet . . . ;)

I try to make sure that DH gets out for some fresh air - a run, a walk or buck ride with the kids or just some play time. He is usually the one that does the dishes in our house, so I try to get those done as well. Once I took all the kids & we left the house until bed time, so he had the whole house to himself for about 3 hours. Hmmm . . . I'm hoping that you find something that will help!

If he's anything like my DH, sending him away to do something alone would make things worse. Especially if he was in the midst of stress and anxiety. He likes to be around us.

Why not make plans for a special evening? Plan for a babysitter, and pick his favorite restaurant. Then, go to dinner together... just the two of you! OR... if $$ is part of the stress, make it a special night at home. For me & Aaron we love playing board games together. If I let him beat me ;) he loves it even more. You can plan to make his favorite meal, put the kids to bed early, and then make hot fudge sundaes (or whatever he loves to snack on) and play a game together. :)

When I'm stressed, what I really want is some responsbility-free time alone. Maybe you could get him a Starbucks gift card and send him off with a book for the afternoon, or take the kids out so he can be home alone when there's a show or game he'd like to watch on tv.

If it was for me, time away without responsibility would be just the ticket. But, I think my hubby would be more like Brook's husband. Time alone wouldn't make him feel better. He would be lonely. He is antisocial, but he loves being around our little family at home. He doesn't read. Strangely, he has a BA in English, but I don't think he's read one single book since he graduated. :D He loves football and baseball. Maybe some tickets to a game with his dad. I think he would enjoy that. I love Jessica's journal idea. I know he would really appreciate something like that. And, he would enjoy a date night with me, but I kinda wanted to do something a little more out of the ordinary and special.

Thanks for the input! You are all sparking some good ideas for me.

We do 'daddy appreciation days'. I'd say it's along the lines of Father's Day but without gifts and lots of pampering from the family. We fix his favorite meal. He eats off of the 'You Are Special Today' plate that we have, the kids are on their best behavior too. We sit him down with the TV remote and whatever his favorite thing to watch is and the kids snuggle with him while he watches or we all take a long walk as a family and tell him things we are thankful for that he does for our family. For my husband what de-stresses him most is just a chance to stop and realize that everything he does is for us and we aren't oblivious to it. It seems like once he takes that time and realizes that he seems to mellow out.

Sherri - that sounds awesome - and exactly like what he needs. He would love that, I know!

I just checked to see if I could get some football tix for him and his dad and everything is sold out for the rest of the season. I was hoping to get the game where the U of Utah (where he earned his BA) is playing the U of AZ (where he earned his MBA). Sold out. Bummer.

But, a daddy appreciation day might be really great, and I know my kids would love doing it for him too.

Haven't read through the others, but would he like a massage? If its super stressed that might help.

My kids are planning one for their dad now. He has been working almost 80 hours a week plus doing side jobs and he's worn out. He needs some pampering from the family. :)

my hubby goes through these stressful spurts, too... the thing he loves best is just renting a hotel room for the night or weekend for the three of us... we don't even travel far - just the next town over... and just hang out as a family... in the pool... watching tv (we don't have cable)... and having a good streak dinner. :)

ohhh I think most husbands might enjoy a streak dinner!! LOL :-)

You guys have great ideas for easy to do things!

Maybe you could start up a hobby for him...Get him a Golf lesson or something, if he doesn't want to do it alone take Golf lessons with him. The Dad appreciation day sounds fun too. But I always feel like Men need something outside of the family to do and sometimes they don't realize that or maybe even feel guilty about it so they just don't. Help him see that it's ok to have "me" time too.

I don't have any ideas really but I like Jessica's idea about the book to write in for him and also what about letting the kids write something to dadyy or draw him a picture in the same book :)

Id have to get a different book for that...some of the notes are not quite PG :p
