For the last couple of years, I've been tossing around the idea of starting a small business selling cupcakes. Where I live, it's legal to sell home baking (yay). A couple months ago, my maternity leave ran out, and while DH makes enough to support us, some months it is pretty tight.

So we've been talking about it, and I would really like to make it a go, soon. But I want to start out proper, with an actual business name & a logo. And here is my trouble. I can't settle on what name sounds *best*. I need some unbiased opinions. I've asked a couple friends, and they are no help, lol.

I will start a poll with my ideas. Please give me some feedback if you can / want. I need all the help I can get!

ooh! what fun, jaedyn :) that sounds awesome!

ok - i'm not going to be much help with the names - because i don't like any of them :( and i'll tell you why - the last one is a bit too long and difficult to say ... and the first ones make me think of something naughty (sorry!) ... there was a stupid and gross you-tube video made by one of the bachelors (ben f.) (from the us tv show the bachelor) that scarred me for life LOL. but maybe other people's minds don't go there!!

eta: i voted for the last one - and it looks like other people's minds aren't as dirty as mine LOL - so you are probably OK :)

My suggestion would be to include a subtitle that makes it clear what your business is about...or at least include it with any of your printed materials. I know it may seem a little wordy but with so many options out there most people won't take the time to figure out who you are and what you are providing.

Such as:

Buttercream Dreams
A Cupcake Bakery

Buttercream Dreams
For All of Your Cupcake Needs

Buttercream Dreams
Creating Cupcakes for Your Everyday Celebrations

Buttercream Dreams
Baking Sweets for Your Celebrations

Also, are you pretty sure that you are going to limit yourself to only cupcakes?

I have friends who had a bakery that failed so this is more advice than what you asked for but I really hope this is a success for you.

1. Limiting to cupcakes or cupcakes and cakes is a good idea. Don't try to do too many things (unless you have a demand from customers, such as I wish you made decorated cookies...then consider it if you think you could make them well and would enjoy doing so).

2. Focus on flavor. Charge enough to cover for better ingredients. I'm guessing that people will be ordering from you so you won't have a lot of waste from making items that are never purchased, such as in a full bakery. Make a cupcake that is so tasty that people will talk about it.

Good luck! A new business is very exciting. (and be sure to post pictures of your cupcakes so we can see them)

I love the first one, and I think that Scrap2day has a great idea about having a tagline, too.

Best of luck to you!

I agree that you either need a tag line or you need to put the word cupcake(s) in your business name. The first two options don't tell me what you make so I'd more then likely skip over you in the phonebook/internet. The last option just doesn't flow off the tough smoothly...or at least it doesn't for me. :D Good luck...I love baking and think it would be so fun to experiment and sell my creations!!!

Ha ha! I didn't see any videos... but my mind went there, too. I voted for the 2nd one only because I thought the "A" helped me not think of naughty things. :D

::goes and hides in the naughty corner::

Hmmm, I should have added a bit more info. I do have a tag-line in my head, lol.

This is what I have been mostly tossing around:
Buttercream Dreams
What Sweet Dreams Are Made Of...

My logo is going to be a cupcake. But I think I might put a little line at the bottom of a business card about it being a cupcake bakery. I am going to start with cupcakes right now. I live in a small town (2000), and don't want to do more than I can handle, with having 2 little girls under 4, plus babysitting my BFF's 3 kids once a week. I already KNOW that I will NOT do cakes. I have no talent for decorating them, and just doing them for "fun" sends my blood pressure through the roof, lol. Cookies are something I might expand into in the future, if the cupcakes get good reviews.

Also, I am, and always will be a scratch baker. My mom taught me from the time I could stand on a chair to watch. I *personally* don't want to charge people for box mix. If they want box mix & canned icing, they don't need me. I'm going to buy the best ingredients I can, and make all my cake & frosting from scratch.

Thank you for your help girls. I have NO idea how some of you are getting naughty thoughts from Buttercream Dreams... but I am NOT watching YouTube videos to find out, haha!!!

I think the first one flows off the tongue better... but, the last one is the only one that really tells me quickly what type of business it is, but I don't like the way it flows, or rather that it doesn't, off the the tongue.

I love the subtitle you have come up for it, for the first one... but it still makes me think naughty thoughts, and it's nothing to do with youtube... HOWEVER.... if ya think about it, it has us talking about it doesn't it? That's what ya want.... people to talk ;-)

Good luck to you! I hope it's a great success for ya!! Sounds fun!

I picked the first one (before I looked at what everyone else had to say). I just think it sounds the best! Good luck, hon!

Personally I like your tagline so well I would be tempted to call it Sweet Dreams Cupcakes. :) I did vote for the first one though. Good luck with your business. :)

Thank you all so much for your help & good wishes! I've been playing with a logo this afternoon, and am pretty excited to get this off the ground!

This is what I have now... I might tweak it a bit yet, but it's pretty close!

Love the logo! 'A Sweet Little Cupcakery' might keep people from calling you for cakes, etc.

I immediately thought naughty too! Haha!

So now I want to know recipes! Anyone want to share their claim to fame cupcake flavor? I am obsessed with baking cupcakes, and have a few that I LOVE!!

Oh my girls are fanatics of bakerys!! I wish yours the best of luck and that its very successful!! Great names, I can't wait to see a layout about the first day you open up your shop!
