Help! Diaper Rash!

Ella has the worst diaper rash I've ever seen. She saw the doc yesterday for a weight check and he looked at it and said it wasn't yeast but his only suggestion was to keep using ointment and really slather it on. I need some suggestions..her little bottom is just raw and I know it hurts so bad. With Avery, Beaudreax's Butt Paste worked every time..well it's not even touching this rash. Any ideas?
 
My favorite diaper cream is original Desitin, it has worked the best for us.

I hope her little tushie feels better soon (hugs)!
 
A lot of the natural mommies on the baby board I used to frequent swore by milk of magnesia - something about breaking down the acids and forming a protective barrier.

ALso - let her go w/o a diaper for awhile..just air out. It helps remove all the moisture that lends itself to the rash.
 
If you can manage it, let her go diaperless for a little bit here and there so her little behind can air out. I highly recommend Calendula cream (whatever brand the store carries). Poor baby!
 
We didn't have very many diaper rashes but the few times we did, I let her go diaper-less for a little while every day and it really helped.
 
Yes, the Original Desitin is 40% zinc oxide as compared to the creamy is only like 10%. It works SO well.

But, the dermatologist told us with Naomi (she has seen a derm and an allergist for her ridiculous rashes) that it can turn from non-yeast to yeast in a matter of hours, so a recheck could be needed if it doesn't get better.

I really advocate NO baby wipes, only rinsing tushie off in the sink/tub during diaper changes and lots of nakie butt time. That has always been what works the best for us!

A friend of mine swore by Lotramin (sp?). One of my twins got bad diaper rash a few times and nothing worked better that Domeboro. It is a powder that you put in the bath...or you can use it as a wet compress dressing too. It takes a couple of times but it really works. You can get it at Walgreens, CVS or any local pharmacy I would imagine...

Hope it clears up soon...poor little thing.
 
Thanks! I've been letting her go diaperless as much as I can and I have been using warm washcloths instead of wipes when I changer her. I just never had much of a prob with rashes with Avery so I'm at a loss with this. It just makes my heart hurt when I have to change her kwim?
 
I was gonna suggest going naked too....I had to let Teaghan go nakie for a bit when she was a couple weeks old. She had the worst diaper rash I'd ever seen as well. My pediatrician suggested this and it might sound gross but do you have an animal supply store near you? There is a product called Bag Balm that's used for Cow Udders (my walgreens sells it too!) that works wonders for diaper rash

Also I'd use a cloth and warm water to clean her NO wipes...they probably burn and irritate the rash.
 
Poor little bottom! Riley had a rash like that... open sores and all. Her doc said to find an ointment with a high percentage of zinc oxide... that is what works the best. A friend of mine swears by Bag Balm, but I always find that hard to find. Once I used the ointment I had for my nursing nipples cuz I didn't have any for butts, that seemed to work as well. Keep it as dry as possible and, like others have said, no diapie for a while now and then. Also, I would have her rechecked if it's not looking better by tomorrow.

Definitely no wipes. Anytime she has a bowel movement, just stick her in the tub. I know it sounds gross, but it really helps to keep the area very clean and allows the butt skin to heal. I also use Desitin and keep the diaper off as much as possible. I know how horrible this is...my daughter has unbelievably sensitive skin and diaper rashes are common. :(

Yes, the tub is the best. We don't even use a washcloth, just pour a cup of warm water over the bum as many times as it takes to get it clean. Usually with a little baby it's not stuck to the skin, kwim?

Oh, and about the Bag Balm.

It does work, you can get it at WalMart, you don't have to go to an animal supply store. BUT...don't use it AND a diaper. There is a compound in bag balm that can make diapers "explode"...do you know what I'm talking about, when the "filling" of the diaper comes out....we used cloth so the bag balm didn't do that, but in a disposable it can! (talk about a mess!) we learned that the hard way with Gabriel a few summers ago!
 
Evie Jo used to get this bad - Desatin & Lotramin (sp?) and using the Lansolin wipes (in the purple pack). Really cake it on.

ETA: The Lansolin Wipes are REALLY gentle.
 
Do they have Aquaphor at wal-mart? which section would it be in? I live in podunk MS so the nearest thing is wal-mart. They didn't have the old kind of desitin..just the new creamy stuff..the only thing I could find with the highest zinc oxide content was beaudreax's. What about just pure zinc oxide? would that work you think? But I'm not sure I could find that either since it's winter time.
 
You should be able to find plain zinc where the anti fungals are or like benadryl cream...I know rite-aid makes their own brand so most stores should have a store brand of it. We tried all kinds of things...we mixed desitin with maalox too and rubbed it on her bottom

Walmart sells Aquaphor as well.
 
Awww, poor sugar!! I would suggest the same as everyone else... no wipes, lots of naked time, and milk of magnesia (maalox-type stuff) and baths.

Good luck hon. Oh, and keep an eye on it cuz it can quickly turn into a yeast infection.
 
we've substituted plain zinc oxide before and it worked but it was only 20%. I don't know if that's across the board or what...but anyway even if so, that's better than 10%, right? :)

However, about the Desitin. You won't find the 40% Desitin in the infants department of Wal-Mart.

It's sold in a large tub, with a purple lid, it's about $13, and is in the Health and Beauty section of Wal-Mart in the "baby needs" aisle. I don't know why it's not in infants, but it's not!
 
When Kennedy would get rashes like that, which was frequently because of a med. she had to take...we would do a&d ointment (cause all the other creams made her scream bloody murder) and then coat that with baby powder that had corn starch in it...the corn starch pulls the moister and the a&d soothes. That is what worked best for us.
I sure hope you find what works for you and she get to feeling better soon.
 
okay..she's been naked all morning lol (thank goodness I thought to bring home some of those blue pads from the hospital) and I managed to find real desitin at wal-mart so I slathered her up with that...it's 51% zinc oxide and man can you tell a difference...it went on nice and thick and stayed put. So hopefully her tushie will be better soon. Thanks for all the suggestions...I may still try some of the others if this doesn't work. :)
 
Her poor little bottom. Looks like you have lots of suggestions to try out.

It was mentioned once before, but Calendula cream is our miracle cream around here. Clears up eczema, rashes and even heals up split cracks in my fingers almost over night.
 
One thing I learned on my 3rd child that I didn't know with the others is that their buns should be dry before you put on whatever diaper rash cream you choose. Otherwise you are just sealing in the moisture from your wipes or wet washcloth and continuing the problem. My neighbor taught me to fan the baby buns with a clean diaper or use a dry wash cloth to gently dab them dry. One of those things I wish I had known with baby #2 who had hideous diaper rashes that took so long to heal =( Good luck!

Poor baby bottom :( I didnt read all the posts...but my little guy had bad diaper rash too, and for some reason desitin irritated his skin. I bought just some plain A&D ointment, and that really worked well. Along with what everyone said...no wipes.

Hope her tushy is better and pinchable soon.
 
i buy this stuff called Triple Paste (i think) you can find it at drugstores and even walmart i believe. its in a white and blue box/tube. works really well. i think it like the stuff the army hospital pharmacy whipped up once when Emma was a baby.

found a website! it's a thick white past/cream and always works well with Aidan and with the girls when they were little.

My little guy has a horrible diaper rash too! We always use Balmex and it is clearing up rather quickly.

I hope your little one is better soon!
 
lots of great suggestions here...my kids have the MOST sensitive skin. i've been through a million nightmare rashes. dry butt (sometimes i'd even use a blowdryer on cool setting), slather on the cream ( dr.smiths' is our fave), and change them a lot!! no getting moisture on the tush!! even if they hadn't peed or anything, i'd change them just to re-apply. good luck!!
 
I'm so glad this post is here! My little one also has a terrible diaper rash, and I've learned so many things that I've been doing wrong! No wonder it's not healing! I'm going to try some of these out when she wakes up; hopefully it works!
 
I know it sounds odd, but put Preparation H on it. Hannah had one of those, and that's what my pediatrician told me to do. It cleared it up fast.
 
Ok, I haven't read the other replies, but Keira had an awful one for months.

Lotrimin (sp), not the ones that says 12 and up on it, just the basic one. The doctors actually gave me a perscripiton for it.

Bag Balm helps

What ended up clearing hers up was a combo of Lotrimin, Desitin, and Maalox all mixed together. I had a little container I kept it in. But don't add a lot of maalox, you still want the mixture to be creamy, not watery.
