Help again (HD space)

I've been battling this since the last time I posted about it a month or so ago. I am literally down to 2 gb of space on my hard drive. I've moved all of my pictures and most of my scrapping stuff to my external. I've run that CCcleaner program. I clean out my recycle bin as soon as I put something in it. I've defragged, etc. I'm running out of options here and don't know what else to do.

I know my iTunes folder is pretty big, but it's only 7.2 gb, and I don't know another option for that.

There are 3.2 gb in AppData; 15.4 gb in Windows; 6.3 in [files]; 6.1 in Program Files; 3.2 gb in SWSetup; and 1.8 in ProgramData. Of all of that, I have no idea what I can safely get rid of. I do not want to get rid of something important, but I don't know what else to do.

The close to 60 gb on my C: drive plus the almost 10 gb on my D: drive (recovery) do not equal the 221 gb that I'm supposed to have. So where did the rest of it go???

Any ideas from you ladies would be so appreciated.

oh my goodness, I am in almost the exact same situation!!!!! I don't know what else to do! Except ours only has like 80 total, not 221... but still! I'm down to about 3 gb and don't know what to do.

Did you do the disk cleanup? It's under start<accessories<system tools
Or is that the CCcleaner program you mentioned?

It can clear out like 5 gb if you haven't run it in a while!

The thing that can be tricky with itunes, is that if you have stuff that is pre-itunes, or used another program to rip cd's onto your computer, itunes works with a different format and will change the format and create a new file for itself. So you might have songs in 2 places. Admittedly, I don't know how to change that or fix that.

I'm having this issue too. I did manage to set up photoshop to do the scratch disk on my ehd instead of my hard drive but taht's not helping all that much.. and I don't know what else to do.

There's a free program called Tree Size that will index your drive and tell you the size of all the files and folders on your drive. I found it pretty helpful when my PC was full.

Hey Lynnette - I remembered you suggesting that last time, so I downloaded a couple of weeks ago. That's how I knew the size of all those things. Maybe I just don't know how to make it work well for me yet. I can see the size, but a lot of that size is in folders that I don't know whether or not I can mess with, ya know.

i had the same problem...when i did the disk cleanup i found i had a bunch of system error dump files that i needed to delete...it freed up a lot of space on my hard drive...

I've used CCleaner and I am about 10GB's away from a full hd as well. I'm hesitant to put everything on my ehd as it is not terribly portable (needs power supply to work) so until I get a new more portable one I am not sure what to do

Definitely, that makes sense. This is probably a long shot but do you have any backup software that is may be backing up directly to your drive? Or a hidden partition or something? I'm assuming you had all 200GB available at one time?

Any ideas for what I can do since I have very little hd space left - it is now under 10GB's out of 142Gb's

With a bit more cleaning I have managed to get the amount of available hd space back up to 14.8GB but I know sooner or later it is going to be back down again

I saw your post over at DST but I'm going to post here, haha. If you're really down to your last space your only real option is either going to be to delete some stuff or to move some stuff off onto another EHD, CD, DVD, etc.

Do you have any files that you don't care to lose? Maybe layered photoshop files of layouts you've printed, or backup zip files? I'd start moving those off your drive first because at least if something happened before you could back them up, it wouldn't be a huge loss.

Believe me, I feel your pain as I'm in very much the same boat. My drive keeps filling up faster than I can clear it off. It's making it near impossible to get stuff done.

I've already shifted all my non essentials onto my ehd already plus all my psd's that are from years before this current year. I can tell just by looking at my hard drive that most of my space is used up by my digi supplies

I don't have any back up zip files as I trash them as soon as I unzip them but I do have a bit of a backlog of zips waiting to be unzipped at the moment ( I am working through them a few a day)

Hmm, you might be stuck then, haha. There's only so many tricks you can do when your drive is full of files that you want to keep. What above moving some of your CT product off of your drive and onto dvds or something? Deleting any old kits you won't use? Things like that?

I hate to say it but I doubt anyone is going to have any real good answers other than either deleting some stuff, moving some stuff, or expanding your drive space. Seems like you've done pretty much everything already.

I think then it might just be ehd purchasing week this week although I did want to wait a few weeks until I could save for it.

I can get a 500GB Maxtor Basics External Hard Drive for $139 but since I only have used Seagate I'm not 100% sure on this one yet

Just thinking about it a bit more, could doing a serious cull of my fonts (I have tons of fonts - I won't say how many I have but it is way, way more than most people would consider a normal amount), brushes & actions etc help me out at least temporarily

I would check the size of those folders to see how much space they're really taking up. If they're not very big, it probably won't be worth the effort to go through them all.

I probably wouldn't even bother then because even if you deleted all of them that would only give you half a gig of space.

Ok back to the savings plan then for the ehd - could mean missing out on some retirement sales on at the moment but if it means my year old laptop lives it is worth it

Well if your drive is that full, you probably wouldn't be able to download your goodies from the sale anyway.

Can you burn the kits onto a DVD? I have started burning my kits (the ones that I design) onto DVD... the entire thing, layered files and all. It freed up so much space for me. I'd decide what things you don't really need instant access to and put those onto DVD/CD and clear up your hard drives. If you don't have much empty harddrive space then Photoshop doesn't like to work very well either. You need space for your scrap happiness!

I've decided to burn cd's of my quickpages that I have designed that are either up in shops already or retired from sale as I don't think I would need them a lot - It might only give me 5Gb's but it is better than anything

To free up my space I moved the retired kits from my SSD designers onto a DVD. I had scrapped with the majority of them anyway. Some designers ended up having a full DVD (**cough**cough** Traci and Dani **cough**cough)

someone (maybe Col I think) made an action that will convert the psd to tiff. Then you don't have to do it by hand.

Saving in .tiff vs .psd is almost cutting your filesize in half (I think about 60%). If you start saving in .tiff now, and just change about 10 a day, you'll be slowly clearing off your hard drive.

Wow what a huge difference converting the files does make - I now know what I am going to do for the next half hour or so
