Hello! Tips thread for newbies?

Hello from the Netherlands! I just found Sweet Shoppe a week ago and now want to join the fun. Could you maybe help me to find my way around here? Am I overlooking a sticky thread for newbies? I wanted to upload an avatar picture, so you can see who I am. I didn't succeed, and only after using the Search-option, did I understand why. I am also under the impression that I can't comment in the layouts gallery?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
