Have you ever made your own candy?

I'm bored and have been looking at random recipes all day.. and somehow that evolved into reading how to make gummy bears lol.. The recipes seem pretty straight forward, except the results sound/look more like jello to me :P any experience?

Oh I'd be interested in this, too! My husband is a gummy addict, and Chloe is definitely taking after him. This could be a fun family project (if they aren't lame. LOL)

The one time I looked into making candy as a project with the kids, the site I found made it sound so complicated-lots of steps, checking temperatures and adding things at precise temperatures, etc. Seems like it shouldn't be *that* hard, but I gave up without even looking for simpler recipes. Let us know how it is if you try it!

I've made candies before, but never tried anything like gummy bears. In general, candy making will require a thermometer and lots of diligence to ensure it reaches the correct temp for the proper consistency/to set up properly.

I haven't made gummy bears, but have tried other candies. The candy thermometer is really important. I had a cheapy one that was not calibrated so the caramels didn't set up quite right. After that I bought another thermometer that was much more accurate. I would take the time to make sure your thermometer is reading properly. Try sticking it in boiling water (while it's boiling) and make sure it reads 212. My first thermometer read about 8 degrees low at water boiling.

I can buy gummy bears at the store for $1 a bag. Making them sounds like an awful lot of work when I know I can go buy them.

I have made lollipops when I was a teen. Lots of precise temperatures, etc. Again, too much work when considering the alternative.

The only "candy" I would attempt to make would be fudge... Or brittle. Something forgiving.

I hate chocolate brookie lol. None of the gummy bear recipes mentioned a thermometer hmm. Maybe that's why all their results looked more jello/fruit snack-ish

Making candy is tricky. I've done lots of chocolate candies b/c they are easy. If you don't like chocolate (gasp!) what about some kind of truffles that are a different flavor like peanut butter or something?

If you try to gummy bears down the road I want to see how they turn out!!!
