Have a steam mop? Is it worth the $?

My house is all tile and stained concrete downstairs and it's going on the market this week. The house we are buying is considerably bigger, but we may not have as much tile (depending on cost- we're building so who knows what we'll decide). Anyway, with two kids and two dogs and work full time, etc. I need something easy and have been eyeballing those steam mops, but want to be sure 1) they work as well or better than a regular mop and 2) they are worth the money.

Anyone have one? which brand? would you buy it again?

Thanks for any recs!

I have never heard of them? BUT ... yeah on your house!! That has to be fun getting to pick out your own stuff!! Can't wait to see a lo!! ;)

I loved my steam mop! that is, until they recalled it. it was just a cheap $40 conair, but it worked so well with just water. I need to replace it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

oh, and yay on building! fun and stressful! :-) but mostly fun!

I had a really old bulky pita steam vac-- it doesn't work anymore-- but they hands down are better than any regular ole mop could ever dream to be. NOW, I don't know what the difference is btwn a steam "mop" and steam "vac" .. well I don't know how the mop works i mean LOL.. but the steam vac was stellar.

Steam vacs are big like vacuum cleaners and steam mops are small like those little stick vacs.

I have a Shark and I love it too! I love that it actually gets the stuff up off the floor, rather than just spreading it around with a regular mop. Sometimes I get a workout pushing it around, but I have an older model... my SIL has a newer one and it's WAY cooler than mine!

well I'd sweep first wiht the vac too ^_^ I just mean it doesn't suck up the dirty water- basically. .^_^ I vote for steam vac then hahaah.. a steam mop seems silly to me.

I know with my steam mop there is no dirty water afterward...it emits just enough water (steam) to clean the floor and it's mostly dry right after you're done.

I was thinking about getting one too- I prefer steam to chemicals because I have a little crawler at home!! I also have a lot of tile in my house... so thanks for this thread! :)

Isn't a steam vac more for carpets?

I have really been thinking about getting a steam mop, so maybe this thread will push me in the right direction.

I've had two different kinds and I hated both of them. For me they were not easy to use...I have really deep grout in my saltillo tiles (my entire downstairs). I won't use them again.

Nope, thats something completely different. A steam vac will vacuum, then mop then suck up all the wetness in one machine. I used it in our huge kitchen and 'nothing' room in my old house with tile and hardwood floors.

yeh I have no carpets :] there was a switch on mine though- to go btwn carpet and hard floors :] it was the awesomest.

I had the Hoover Steam Vac before we had wood floors and then I was told we couldn't use it on the wood (high grade laminate). We were told to use a very damp mop. Uh ok. That didn't work and our entire house is wood, except for the bedrooms and the bathrooms so I bought one of those Swiffer Wet Mops last weekend. It's ok. I'm wondering if I can use one like the Shark Steam Mop on my floors since they don't actually put water down on the floor.... might be worth the investment for me. :)
