Hahahhaa...It's Funny, But It's Not...

Oiy. So...I'm cleaning off my desk because tomorrow I'm getting a new computer - mine is pretty much garbage at this point, it can barely do anything.

ANYHOW, here's a funny story... (don't worry, it'll come full circle in a few minutes):

Last JANUARY (lol) we were filling out all the information for our passports for our upcoming trip to California this past April. I already had the small wallet size birth certificates for the kids, but the instructions said that the framing size were better because they had the parents names on them. So fine, I put out the money to get those. Fast forward a few weeks and the person signing our passports was shocked to learn that I carry my own birth certificate, the kids and my SIN with me at all times. Apparently they're supposed to be put somewhere safe. So after we dropped off the paperwork, I put all our documentation back into this envelope and when we got home, I put it *somewhere* in my office.

Fast forward until a week before our trip, and I read a paper that said I HAD to have birth certificates for each of the kids on top of their brand new passports. I knew I had 2 copies for each, so I went looking for them. I couldn't find them anywhere, and I started to panic. I had done a huge cleanup in my office a couple months before and thought I'd thrown the whole works out without paying attention. Nearly in tears, I called the registrars office and they told me that I could order new ones, but to have them rushed, I would have to pay extra. Fine, whatever...at this point, in my mind, it was have the birth certificates or kiss our trip goodbye. I paid almost $400 to get new copies of the birth certificates (1 for each of the kids, and my own) - this cost MORE than the passports did!

Turns out, we were never asked for the new birth certificates on our way through security. So it was a waste. I figured, better safe than sorry, etc...and at least now I have them.

So now...I'm cleaning off my desk...and what do I find?! Yep, you guessed it...the envelope containing the original documentation. I know I'm supposed to throw them away...but dang, those are EXPENSIVE pieces of paper there. And I don't want to tell DH...this is not the first time I've done something like this (ahem...while we were in California, I "lost" our tickets to Disneyland for the second day...I went to the ticket office with our letter from Children's Wish and tears in my eyes, just HOPING they'd give us another set of tickets...they did...and an hour or so later I found the original dang tickets in another pocket of my wallet).

Seriously...I either need to get better organized or shake the cobwebs outta my brain. This is getting bad!

Bree - think I missed a post somewhere... what is up with your old computer? wasn't it a Dell for which you were going to upgrade the memory? did something else go wrong?

and an aside, er, two words. File cabinet. Mine is scary - color coded tabs, files, folders, but you don't have to go that far..... and I'm yearning for a fire-safe one now...

OMG Bree! $400!?!?! that's nuts!

In a similar story, one of our days of vacation, Jo got out of bed very quietly and must've been up an hour before anyone else woke up. He TRASHED the condo and LOST one of our $150 Go San Diego Cards. So we start cleaning up and pick up everything, the rest of the cards, boxes of legos, deck of cards etc. for a good TWO HOURS and couldn't find the card in this little tiny living room. Finally, as I was pissed off and walking out the door prepared to spend the whole day paying for things I ALREADY paid for, P checks the deck of cards (that had been scattered everywhere and then picked up while we were cleaning and it was in there! Talk about divine intervention!!

I could go on forever about the things wrong with this computer, lol. Yes, it's the same Dell, the one that the Dell reps "fixed" (ie, made the errors go away, but didn't actually fix anything). After they fixed it, it was moving way slower than it was before, so I upgraded the RAM. It didn't help much. It's a tad faster, but still slower than it was before they "fixed" it. I'm almost 100% sure that my hard drive is failing, but Dell won't do anything because I'm not getting any errors that help them figure out what is going on.

After they "fixed" it, I could no longer run iTunes - my sound is so distorted, even without anything else running (not just in iTunes...even you know that sound Windows makes when you log on? yeah, it's totally distorted, it takes like 10x longer to spit it all out than it should).

I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking that all my random issues with Firefox are a result of something going crazy in my computer - since the issues are not bugs that they know about. It shuts down randomly when I visit sites that I don't normally and is doing REALLY whacky things here at SSD to me.

My graphics driver is crapping out on me as well (I was having issues before, which they also "fixed"...now I'm getting another error but different than the one before).

It's just time to toss this one...the time I'd waste going in circles with Dell is not worth the $400 I'd pay for a new tower (I've got a perfectly fine monitor, printer, keyboard, Wacom tablet, etc...all I need is a tower, lol).

I'm essentially just getting a new computer to get me through the next few months until I can afford my Mac. DH will be inheriting it when I'm done with it - so he doesn't mind me picking up a new one, since he doesn't even want the Dell, lmao.

It's just really frustrating. I can run Photoshop, but have to restart my computer every hour or so while doing it - it's counter productive. LOL!

Sorry about the book...lol...

Isn't that an awful feeling, though? If Disney hadn't given me new tickets, I would have been shelling out the cash for 4 tickets...I was fully prepared to do it, and SOOO glad I didn't get that far, haha.

Bree!! That totally sucks! I think it was BETTER thinking that they got tossed than to find them 10 months later under a pile of papers, lol!

That sucks Bree. I do stuff like that all the time. Jeff finally went out and bought a filing cabinet. LOL

I do stuff like that all of the time...

But why do you have to throw away the lost ones? Now you just have extras just in case....

The gov't says we shouldn't have more than 1 copy...I'm guessing because the more you have, the easier it is to misplace them. Probably an identity theft issue.

Um, okie dokie.... another weird gov't rule.

I think I have at least 3 certified copies of my birth certificates. 2 are in our fireproof safe at my house and 1 is at my mom's in her safe.

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about having more than one if you have them in a safe, secure place. (which doesn't include being buried on your desk... :p)

I wouldn't chuck them either Bree... put them somewhere SAFE (and somewhere you will remember... not like most safe places, lol), or give a copy to L&S to hold onto. You never know... your others may get stolen, and then you would have to buy MORE, when you just threw them away!
