Guess what girls??

Okay, so I've been asking DH for a Rebel. Begging. Told him that I would take that as my gift for the rest of the year.. no birthday, no christmas, no anniversary. We were going to take a family vacation with our tax rebate. I ended up winning a trip to Branson from work... soooooooo..... we're going to Branson in May and I get a Rebel!!! :thumbup:

Now... any great tips for me? Where should I buy it? What lenses do I HAVE to have??? DH is set on a Canon, I like the Rebel, but should I be looking at something else??

I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!
 
Woo hoo girly!! I'm a Nikon girl myself so I don't have any tips except this - have fun!
 
WAIT! The XSi should be hitting stores soon and it's the newer better model. I'm waiting on it before I buy my DSLR (Congrats btw!!!!).

Now if you like the XTi better, then you should still wait, cuz the release of the XSi has dropped it's price. So you can buy more things for it :)

Everyone talks about the 50mm f1.4 lens and everything I've read about it is a positive.
What I'm considering now is skipping the "kit" lens (18-55mm lens) and getting an 18-300 instead. Cuz I like to zoom in on things :p
 
Oh we're waiting. Gotta wait for that tax rebate to get here. LOL It won't be until sometime in May. :)
 
Oh ok, you're golden then. I am on pins and needles waiting for the Ritz near me to get the XSi. I'm absolutely dying.

Thankfully I should have my laptop by wednesday night. So that'll tide me over for another week or two, lol.
 
I just got a text from the man that says you know we're sharing this right? LOL So I texted him back.. fine then it's your bday and christmas present too. I take wayyyyyyyyyyy more pics then him... sharing my butt. LOL

Oh Congrats! I love my Rebel, it's been great to learn on and there are tons of tuts out there to help you!

I also recommend the 50 mm lens, it's awesome.

Col... curious where you are looking at the 18-300 mm. I'm thinking of asking for a new lens for my birthday.
 
It was more an in my head thing than anything Jaclyn. Ken Rockwell recommended one for the D40 and I think it was a 75-300 (could def be wrong though). And there was a thread over at MSA recently asking about if a kit lens was really worth it.

I KNOW I'm getting hte 50mm, but I also like to be further from the action and then zoom in. So a bigger zoom might be worth it for me, and then skip the kit since it'd kinda be doubling up.

But like I said, it'll all depend on which camera I get, and was more an "in my head" arguement, lol.
 
Congrats Sara!!!

I'm a Nikon girl. I have the 55-200 zoom and I love it. In fact I usually keep that on my camera rather than the smaller kit lens. My next lens purchase will definitely be a 50 mm.

LOL! I have arguements in my head all the time!

I'm definitely getting a tripod for my birthday... so I can actually be in some family photos! But I'm going to try to sucker DH or my mom into a lens too! I just have to research what I want. And like you said, the zoom would be really nice especially with boys and sports!

And now that you mention it, a tripod would be a great idea too! LOL!
 
I have the Canon D30 and LOVE it! My nieces both have the Rebel but my one niece who is a photographer now is saving money to buy the D40 which just came out. The D30 is now a little cheaper and it's just awesome! I bought mine here. My BIL recommended this site to me. He bought is D30 there as well as his $1500 lens and all his other camera equipment. He's had great customer service and so did I. I highly recommend both the camera and the website. I'll definitely be buying from there again. Oh, by the way, it's very fast as well cause when you're ready for your camera you want it NOW!!
 
I've heard great things about B&H, Ritz/Wolf, and Adorama for cameras. Glad to hear another success story though!
 
Thanks Amy! That's the same website Meg sent me. We're going to go to one of the camera stores here and actually look at them, since it's all going to come down to what I like holding. I really appreciate all the help since I have NOOOO idea what I'm doing here. LOL
 
Woohoo! How exciting Sara! I have the XTi and just love it! It's my fourth baby lol! I got mine from B&H and their service and shipping were great. So far I have the 18-55mm kit lens and the 50mm 1.8 lens, and the 50mm is the one I use like 98% of the time. I'm getting a new lens when we get our stimulus rebate (and a new computer woohoo!) and so far I'm looking at the Canon 28-105mm lens. All the reviews say it's a great step up from the kit lens and just a great all around lens, and Amazon has it for $237. Another good lens is the Canon 75-300mm, it comes in several models and the price ranges from about $130-$190 depending on what kind of focusing motor it has.
 
Hmmm, tax rebate...interesting thought. I'm guessing you have to file taxes or something to get one. Maybe I'll try workin on that today. ;)

That's so cool! Congrats on your new camera. I have no tips, being a p&s girl myself, but I'm way jealous!
 
Haha Kellie! And yeah you have to file your 2007 taxes first in order to get the stimulus rebate (if you're eligible) starting in May! I'm (not so) patiently waiting for May to get here now lol!

Thanks Col! We did direct deposit for our regular tax refund so it looks like we'll be in the May 9th direct deposit group based on DH's social!! Now if we had listed me first on our return we'd be in the first group! Darn! We should still get it in time for me to get my new lens before my stepbrother's wedding so that's awesome!!
