geez another fire

My husband was outside today and came in to tell me he could smell smoke and could see there was a fire nearby but we could not see the actual fire from our house. We went for a drive and saw that the fire was about one-two miles from our house. Im really not going to be sleeping well tonight. So far the winds are blowing it away from our area (which is horrible for those who are now in the path of the fire). They are saying this fire was started by someone burning yard debris (leaves, sticks, grass etc). Just not good. This is the third fire here within like maybe three miles of my house in the last month.
 
oh I hope you will be safe! Have you heard if they got it under control yet?

I HATE the time of the year when they allow burning of yard debris...it STINKS big time, polutes the air, and makes it hard for me and my kids to breathe. I have driven by people's yards that are NOT outside monitoring it like the "law" says they must. I wish they would outlaw it.
 
we are safe. I made my hubby call to check so I could get some sleep and they said that it is mostly under control and that they are cutting a path around the fire to help it burn itself out. The bad thing is there is still a burn ban in effect last I checked. They should not be burning anything really. He didnt ask if there was an damage to any homes so Im still really hoping that they got to it in time because it said on the news that there were some homes in danger.

Oh and I am the same way. There was a fire in the next town over at the beginning of last month and we went to a car show over there and between the pollen counts and the smoke I could barely breathe. I ended up with a perforated eardrum the next day because I had so much fluid built up

I'm so glad you are safe. I got up and got right here to check to see if you were ok. I hear arguments around here that the burning is allowed to keep it out of the landfill...but why not have composting?? It's not good to be burning and putting that in our atmosphere...including for people that have trouble breathing!
 
We had a change in wind direction between last night and today and the fire which was effecting like 5 acres spread to about 400. They had a mandatory evacuation for everyone within one square mile of the fire so that included us because by this time it was probably 1/2 a mile away. We stayed for awhile which probably wasnt the smartest thing to do but we were ready to leave with everything packed up and the winds changed again. That appears to have been enough to get it a little more controlled and as of 6:00 tonight it is like 50% controlled. It is really smoky which is hard on breathing but other then that it does seem to be alot better and moving farther away. Thank goodness!! It will defenitely be another really uneasy night with very little sleep though.
 
ohhh and now it appears the fire was started because of sparks from a four wheeler?? Im not sure how that would happen exactly but the whole area is really dry so I guess anything is possible. They say there is rain in the forecast tomorrow so I am praying that is true. We can defenitely use rain!!
 
WOW how scary!!! Guess you better keep your air on to help you breathe...but stay by the radio or tv and keep posted until it is out!
 
we havent heard anything all lsst nigt so that should be a good thing. It was a really long night though. We also got a call around midnight that there was another fire across the street from my mother & father-in-laws house. My husband said it is really bad over there when there is a fire because the woods are alot thicker then over here

Gosh I was sooo tired this morning when I posted!! We just took a drive over to my in-laws house and the fire is directly across the street right now at the road. There is really only a matter of a few feet between their house and the fire. So now Im really praying that the fire is able to be contained before its to late. That is really scary to see!!
 
Where are they staying while the fire is going on? I bet they are terribly worried. How much area is that fire consuming at a time?
 
They were not evacuated at the time when we were over there. I believe they got the fire back under control at my inlaws though. My husband went back over there after he dropped me off earlier and he said that they had blocked the roads from people coming in so he had to park and walk in. The police officer almost did not let him in but he said he needed to go check on his parents who were just two houses down from where the officer was stationed and he let him through then. I have not heard about how much that fire had consumed today but the one by us has now consumed a little over 400 acres in about 24 hours. It does seem to be a little better today because it is not nearly as smoky outside as it has been in the last few days. Im almost now wondering if someone is not starting these fires intentionally though because there was just no explanation how that a fire can start in the middle of thick woods with no houses nearby and no lightning in the last few days. Im sure the fire dept will figure it out though. Once the fire is out they can focus on the hows and whys.
 
wow that is amazing...that is a LOT of acres!!! I hope they can find out the real cause...and if it is a person...I hope they find them! Stay safe!
 
As you all probably know we had huge and devastating fires in Australia this summer, so I know how you feel and pray for you all to stay safe. Take care!
 
I'm in Naples - we get them all the time this time of year too. I hate going out and smelling that smell!
