gasoline?!?!?

how is it possible that oil has dropped 30%/barrel but the price of gas has only gone down 10%...freaking criminals! :cursing:

just my rant for the morning.

Jordan and I were JUST talking about that yesterday!! It was $3.45 on the way home from work. I paid $3.49 near work. And it's sad that that is cheap now!

it doesn't make sense!!! :cursing: the oil companies are wringing us out til there is nothing left. whats happening is they know alternative fuel, etc is coming and they are compensating for that future lack of income...that's my theory. we can't beat em. i swear! if less people use gas, the price will sky rocket!

I dont know but I found a receipt from the end of April and it had cheese that I buy every now and then on it and it was 2.99. The same exact cheese has went up to 5.19!!! How can it go up over 2.00 in less then 6 months? Its the same way as alot of stuff I buy. Like we buy these frozen chicken fried steaks. They arent gourmet or anything but they taste ok LOL and they used to have 10 patties in a bag now they have 8 or 9 and are still charging the same price!! Half gallons of ice cream are now almost all only 42 ounces but yet still the same price. Some cereal has changed the amount packaged.

Dairy (and lots of other things) went up because of the cost of shipping.
Most wheat/corn based items went up because so many farmers are selling to ethanol plants (which is the biggest waste of money EVER and I hate that the politicians are still pushing Ethanol as the next big energy solution), PLUS the flooding in the central states in the spring ruined a LOT of crops.

*sigh* .... it doesn't make sense .... the politics behind it completely bug me, but I'll spare everyone my tirade, lol.

Yes but we have several dairies in this area which shp locally. I know they dont make the cheese but milk is still rising even on the dairies which are local dairies and not small cost increases but the same % as all the other stuff in the stores. I guess that might be for the feed for the cows and the increases still in gas huh? Ughhh it is just depressing. My husband has already put 80 dollars in gas since Friday and we still have what two more days until payday? I spent 35 dollars at the store to buy three dinners (ill eat leftover for lunch I guess). When he and I first got married 35 dollars would buy everything for the week for the two of us. That was breakfast, lunch and dinner!! I am just tired of all the increases in everything except wages :-(

This is how gas is always priced, it's never based on the current cost but on the "futures" market. Personally I think they've basically exploited the whole trend toward a green economy to try to make it seem like we've run out of gas overnight and therefore must ration it. Their record profits would seem to tell the same story. Unfortunately you'll likely never see the government do anything about it since so many politicians have ties to big oil.

not many politicians! all politicians are in bed with the oil companies! every last bloody one of them!

i hear you jessica! that why i hope the new president brings a wind of change in this matter!!

I don't think there's that much a new president is going to be able to do, but I also haven't done any research on the candidates and their proposals.

The only thing that's going to bring gas prices down, is less usage. And that's not going to happen anytime soon. Alternative energy sources are SO far behind it's unreal. Ethanol and natural gas as sources for vehicles is a joke. Wind power only does so much, and usually gets sandbagged by environmental groups protecting local bird life. Solar power is still way behind and unaffordable/not cost efficient (we actually looked into it since we have a good size roof that gets sun throughout the entire day - I thought we could put up 1 or 2 panels and be ok, we'd have to cover the entire roof in panels and even then it would barely make a difference).

Jess, if the dairy cows are corn fed (which, I have no idea), then the problem might be that their local feeders (making that word up, I don't know you'd call them) might have started selling their corn to the ethanol plants, that would have a big effect on them. Then their feed costs would rise if they have to go to other sources. We're actually IMPORTING corn. From other countries. right. Awesome. I HATE ETHANOL!

LOL you'll be going without ALOT of stuff!! Corn is in almost everything you eat. It is in almost every sweetened food product. It is in soda, alot of juice drinks and even some juices(corn syrup) its in alot of baked goods. When you order pizza from a pizza place they coat the bottoms with cornmeal to keep it from sticking. Seriously read the labels on food and oyu will be shocked how many of our foods and drinks have corn in them.

damn corn! never eating it again! LOL!! :D

Don't blame the corn. Blame the stupid politicians who want to gain votes in the midwest by saying they support ethanol because ethanol is more lucrative (as far as I can tell) than whatever the farmers were doing with their corn before. The politicians are all about ethanol if it'll get them votes.

Too bad it's less cost effective than regular gasoline, and less potent so you have to buy more of it to go as far on regular gas. Super. Sounds like a GREAT alternative to oil. :cursing: :cursing: :cursing: :cursing: :cursing:

i know!! my sister and i were just talking about this. hello corn meal and corn syrup in almost everything. she said something like 88% of food in the grocery store has some form of corn in it!

col. i'm mad at everyone and everything. don't try to stop me. :p next it's green beans!

Oh, don't get me started either! When I first went out on my own 10 years ago, I paid 99 cents a gallon, the prices now, no, that's not inflation, thats outrageous!

I am pretty sure the corn used to make ethanol and the kind you eat are different types. I think the problem is they are replacing crops which were used for food to grow the corn for ethanol. I could be totally wrong on this though. I just watched a documentary on PBS on this at like 3 in the morning so I was not exactly completely alert LOL

It's still the same principle though. They aren't growing food corn or feed corn, so they can grow ethanol corn, kwim?

Good to know that they are different though. :)

HA! LOL!! I have to look at corn everyday!! We live right in the middle of gazillion of corn fields! The farmer used to put beans in the one right next to the left side of our house but the past few years it has been strictly corn too. So we live in nothing but a sea of corn!

I agree though, it is sickening the way they do things with the prices and the whole butterfly effect that the high fuel prices has on every part of our lives.

yep...I also read somewhere that we do not need corn to make ethanol that there are other ways. Sugar I believe is one type. Then there are alternative fuels that can be made from some sort of grass that is readily and abundantly available although I do not know what it is called now.

There are TONS of alternative energy solutions. TONS!
Yet, they push ethanol. ::sigh::

I forget the name of hte show, but it was on discovery I think, and it was a bunch of guys in a van traveling the country looking at ways to be environmentally friendly and use less oil energy. It was FASCINATING! They rigged their van to run on vegetable oil. When they needed to fill up they would stop by fast food places and ask if they could have their oil. And they always said yes! Lol! there were soooooooooo many cool ideas on there, I loved that show.

If I lived in the southwest I'd totally live in one of the houses they showed. It was partially buried, and they used old tires for the insulation around it. Glass bottles to heat it. Rain water for showers and toilets. Grey water went to plants to grow your own food. It was AMAZING!

I totally agree with this. What's even more annoying is because the oil companies have such a pull in this country, all of the alternatives get locked up in red tape. I mean even if we didn't look for an alternative fuel source, the technology is there for cars to be WAY more efficient - like 100 miles to the gallon! But will we likely ever see that? Probably not if the oil companies get their way! :cursing:

I have seen shows like that. That vegetable oil thing is being done by alot of people. Doesnt require a large investment to convert a diesel vehicle over and I dont think it requires much to process the oil in order to use it and the reason why restaurants allow you to take it is because they pay for the disposal of that oil so if someone was taking it for free then they save. I was watching on PBS the other day this guy who actually gets money from the power company for his excess power produced from solar panels. He grows alot of his own vegies and either walks or bikes everywhere he goes. He is a movie star yet lives in a home which is like 2000 sq foot. He collects rain water for watering his plants. When he does need to drive he drives an electric vehicle. Oh gosh I cant think of his name now though. He was an older guy who is really blonde...

I KNOW!! And what's even funnier is that even if you buy an ethanol capable car, 1) there are like, NO stations that pump it and 2) once you start wtih ethanol you have to stick with ethanol. The cars aren't able to switch back and forth very rapidly if at all. So then, you can't go anywhere if it doesn't have an ethanol station along the way! RIDICULOUS!!!

And the gas efficiency is a joke. The commercials for huge SUV's that boast 23 mpg make me sick. Like wow, 23 huh? you guys are really pushing yourself to improve things, thanks so much! *barf*

Yea yea yea! Ed something or other I think!

Yea if we were to put solar panels up (which we can't thanks to our HOA, but it's too expensive anyway) the energy company would pay US. AWESOME! Too bad it's still RIDICULOUSLY expensive to use solar in that way. But they are working on super thin solar panel designs that will make it much more cost effective in the near future. (Not that we could use it, GD HOA's!! :cursing: )

You know there is a device you can install on your car which will allow the engine to run on half the cylinders in stop and go traffic where the extra power/speed isnt needed which greatly increases fuel efficency. Now dont ask me how to do it because that I have no clue about. Some cars I have read about already have that capability. Like I think the new charger with the hemi in in will shut down to using only 4 cylinders automatically? Anyhow just thought Id tell you that in case you didnt already know LOL. Ill do a search adn see if I can find any info on it.

It probably depends on how old your car is.
A lot of the new V6's have that capability built in now, where it'll use only hte cylinders it needs.

yea it probably does. I saw it on the news a few months back that some guy did that to his car and I believe he was filing for a patent on it. Im not sure if he did file or not. I asked my hubby about it and he was the one who told me about the hemi. It is defenitely an interesting idea. Did a search online and it said alot of cars being produced in Japan are going to have that capability(yet not be available in the US?? not really sure of the reasons on that). It seems to me that with technoology being the way it is we should be able to build an inexpensive car which would increase fuel efficincey (spelling??) and decrease emissions at the same time.
