Gallery praise question

i always wonder if i comment on the "subject" of the layout if the scrapper maybe assumes I don't appreciate the things like shadows or title work or whatever. And then I think about the people who make a big deal that their layouts are for memory keeping (usually the ones who aren't into scrapping as art or hobby), and I think maybe they actually prefer the comments about the story they shared.

I had a friend who stopped scrapping because she started to realize that she loved photography more... when people said "Nice shadows!" she was like "Wait--what about the picture?!" LOL!

But you can't overthink your love... just leave your heartfelt impression and leave it at that. You can't make everyone happy...

Totally agree. All the judging whether comments are "genuine" based on word choice or word count is silly. If I leave a comment, whether about design or just a WOW, Love this!, it's because I mean it.

yep me too!

sometimes i find that i don't comment as much because i don't want people to think i'm not being genuine.. but sometimes its really hard for me to say things other than WOW love it.. i swear its genuine though.

gosh I hope nobody finds a compliment to be offensive because it's not "enough"! When I can jump into the gallery, I hope a simple compliment that I write will convey that I love the layout. I wish we could just "like" a layout (like facebook) without comments though.

I didn't get to read all of these comments yet, but wanted to put my 2 cents in =) When I comment a layout, it's because I genuinely like it. I won't always say what in particular - although sometimes I do - but if I take even a couple seconds to comment something, it musta really caught my eye. There are so many amazing layouts on here, it would be impossible (at least for this mama lol) to sit and comment specifics on all of them all day.

I don't care what the comment is about - any comment makes me *sqquueee* and feel special (ha!) This may sound silly - but even more so when a designer takes time to comment something.

I haven't gotten on a whole lot but so far I love this place - much more friendly than the other forums I joined a few months back and gave up on. You ladies rock! =)

I don't generally comment often in any galleries because I don't really know what to say and I feel like saying "I like it"... "it's beautiful", etc... will be taken as I'm lazy or not being genuine, so instead I generally just don't post at all - which I guess isn't good either, LOL. Once in a while I comment though and every time I feel bad afterwards cause I know it's not 'enough' - but it IS genuine, very much so...

And... speaking of loving stuff..... Julie, I just gotta tell ya, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your siggy.... it makes me wanna go to the beach - in Hawaii! and have a drink ... and I don't even drink... LOL! LOVE the colors as well, it's so pretty! Which kit is that from?

I always like when one of my 'scrap hero(ine)s' comments on my work. It doesn't happen often, but it just makes me smile.

Or one time I got a comment that someone went and bought the kit after they saw my page. That made me smile, too.

I'm with you on this one! When someone I respect or try to emulate tells me I've done a good job, I'm over the moon. Doesn't matter to me if it was photos, shadows, journaling, composition, or whatever. Or if the designer of the kit or template I've used comments on the page......swoon. Someone once left a comment that if I wasn't on that designer's team, she felt I should be.....that was probably the best compliment ever, the one that told me that at least one person out there things I'm good enough to sit at the big kids' table. Sigh.

And I just want to reiterate that I was NEVER debating the merit of comments at all...short, long, witty, number of exclamation marks used...whatever. That was never my point.

I was just curious if you liked a particular sort of comment. Someone purchasing a product because of the way you used it is definitely a super win comment! I bet that makes you all smiles.

And I know some people are really into their stories, or their photography or whatever, and this wasn't about tearing down comments that weren't somebody's favorite...it was about learning about my community and what they like. If I happen to know somebody is really focusing on technique, then, by George, I'm going to make sure I pay attention to that. It's something *I* want to do to give encouragement and validation and to bring a smile to somebody's face.

I do hope that those of you who have been a little sad because maybe you feel you missed the mark if you weren't getting the sort of feedback you wanted realize that most of us probably are just going to comment on what stood out the most. But that certainly doesn't mean that all of the other things weren't also fabulous.

Kinda off the subject, but I've always wondered if it is okay comment back on a comment, say to thank someone for something they said. Sometimes I will feel bad because someone says something that totally makes me smile and I don't reply back. Is that something others of you do in a PM?

I've never been unhappy with someone saying "nice page". I know others get all bothered by it but I generally just think that the person thought it was a...nice page. And that makes me happy.

I'll admit that sometimes I don't get wordy with my comments... but my comments are genuine even if it's just a simple "WOW, this is stunning!" Sometimes, I just don't have the words to say in particular, it just stands out to me and it's almost like it makes me speechless.

but, I do like any genuine comment, whether it's about the journaling or the logistics of the layout...

this is totally me and I hope nobody ever gets offended when I say "I absolutely LOVE this LO" cause I don't say it, unless I mean it and actually I enjoy any comment somebody leaves me whether it is about the subject, journaling or the overall composition

It is totally okay, but I bet most of us probably rarely, if ever, go back to a layout and would miss the comment. I suppose a PM would be the smart way to go. That's one of the conveniences of Facebook, for sure.

There are so many layouts that if I open something full page, something about it has struck me and it can be anything. It's something I can relate to and you've inspired me to do something similar, an incredible photo, meaningful journaling or just an awesome title. I do try to read through the comments and try to point out something different from what others have said. And sometimes you may have just made an awesome layout with products I already have - that always makes me extra happy!

I do have to say SSD is THE best place about comments. They are generally very thoughtful, sincere and so reciprocating. I love coming home after work to see someone I left feedback for has bumped one of my layouts back to the front and it has gotten some extra love.

I just like whatever comments I get. Whether it is on composition or journaling or photos. The time that person took to choose my layout to not just comment on but click on and look at when there are 1000's of layouts they could have commented on is what means the most to me. But if they take the time to read the journaling (mine is sometimes harder to read) then that really means alot to me

I love getting comments and I love them all. I try to give meaningful comments and not say what others have said before, but sometimes I just can't find the words. That would be no problem if I could do it in Dutch...

I love getting any kind of comments on my pages. But, the ones I truly love are the ones that comment on something from the page, whether it be my shadowing, clustering, journaling, photos etc.

That's how I comment too, I look for something that just strikes me about the layout and comment on it.

I missed this thread! Hmm, for me the best comment really is if someone bought a kit because they saw my layout--biggest thrill ever

But as for whether I prefer the technical over the storytelling, I actually love both! IF I know I slaved over a layout's shadows, composition, layering, etc and then someone noticed it, would be so awesome! On the other hand, if I spent time on my journaling or if it was a story that was precious to me, for someone to comment on the journaling makes my heart sing

As for my own experience, sometimes it's easy for me to see where a scrapper focused on in the layout and I like to comment on that. But most times, I tend to comment on what really catches my attention first

I like it all, but I think I really especially like the actual scrap "talent" praise a lot. I wonder if it has to do with feeling validated that I spend so much time doing it. I could have just told the story with no photos or in a less artistic way, but I choose scrapbooking for my storytelling medium because it is creative...an artform.

This is me. Exactly. Especially with me trying to step out of the "template shadow" more and more, when someone comments on something about the scrapping, it makes my day. But having said that...ANY comment I get makes me smile. It means a lot to me that someone bothered to click on my page and write a comment, even if it's just "oh, great page" or something like that.

Oh just wanted to add when I comment on a layout I really really love it. I know I do not spend near enough time in the gallery or leave as many comments as I probably could. So if all I say is gorgeous layout it is because I love EVERYTHING!!! LOL If I say I love the photos or journaling it is not that I do not like everything else as well it is just what attracted me to the layout or what I saw that really effected me (like the journaling for instance). And if I add the layout to my favorites then it is one I want to look at more and possibly scraplift or has really inspired me in some way. I think to me someone adding mine to their favorites is the ultimate compliment even if they dont comment because I know some people here english is not their first language.
