GRRRR, WHY does this keep happening? I was 95% finished with a LO... was just finishing the title... and POOF, PS shut down. GRRR!! I save as I go, but I hadn't saved since I'd added all the shadows and the title. At least I didn't lose the whole thing but DANG it makes me mad.

Whew, rant over... back to your regularly scheduled programs.

That used to happen to me CONSTANTLY, Laura. Its was aboslutely maddening! I have PSE5 and once I switched over to Vista n(from XP), the problem totally stopped. I haven't had one single shut-down since switching.

Im sorry that happened. I just had this happen about 2 weeks ago.. but I hadn't saved anything and I was just doing the date and PS stopped responding.. I was so mad!

OMG, I hate that!! Except I rarely save things until the finishing touches have been put on, so I've lost a LOT of work over the years, lol. It hasn't happened that much with my new computer because I've got quite a bit of RAM and stuff, but my old computers it was a CONSTANT problem!!

I had this same prob... turned my memory usage down and it seems to have worked.

Edit > Preferences > Performance...

Now, I was told to turn Memory Usage down to somewhere between 50-65%... and never more than 75%. Mine's at 50 and I haven't had any issues or that pop-up that says there isn't enough memory available.

As far as history states (steps for Undo), tinker with a level that works for you. I screw up a lot so mine is at like 15 or something.

And as for the cache levels... I have no issues with mine set at 2. *shrug*

ETA: and when you tinker, you have to restart PS for it to take effect :)

Annie, I had to go check my levels, cause i had never heard of that performance section you speak of... LOL.. My memory seems to be okay, but my cache is at 6... yours is at 2?? Whats the difference??

About Image Caches:
Cache Levels are screen redraws. It’s how many versions of the current active document Photoshop saves. When you’re working on large documents, Cache Levels helps speed up the redraw function, and makes image manipulation proceed faster. However, they are held primarily in RAM memory, so the more Cache Levels you select, the less RAM memory is available for other Photoshop functions.

I'm pretty sure that means that when it's set lower, you have to zoom in closer to inspect the quality of stuff. With the elements all perfect to begin with (oh yes, shameless designer arse-kissin!), I don't personally mind that it's slightly distorted at 16% zoom or whatever.

I hear the Microsoft is going back to WindowsXP because of all the problems with Vista and they have had a lot of complaints. I wouldn't have it that's for sure. I hope to get a new computer this summer, laptop, and it isn't going to have Vista on it! Sorry you that problem sweetie.

This used to happen to me ALL the time, and I would be FUMING when DH got home. I don't know what he did, but the problem stopped happening when he updated the computer. Maybe something to do with all the extra RAM and memory he bought, haha!
