I'm using a trial right now and how the bloody heck do you drag one image to another?

How do I release one file from that dang bar? In CS5 you just drag the tab down and it is released from the bar and then you can drag the photo or image onto your blank canvas. I've tried everything. If I 'select all > copy' and then paste onto the blank canvas they are pasted as a flattened image and I lose all my layers.

I must be missing something simple. Help please!

I might have figured it out. I selected all the layers I wanted to copy, and dragged them down to the blank canvas in the project bin. Is that the right/only way to do it?

Val.....are all the items you dragged in, are they in your work bin at the bottom? I am in Version 9 so I am not sure all the changes made to 10. If you can see the images in the bottom work bin........I would double click on your LO so it shows up in the work space. Then I would search the work bin for the paper or ellie I want and just click and drag up to the work space. (does that make sense?) I hope there is a work bin! LOL

YES. It's the floating docs I can't figure out. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out now.

I have PSE9 on my Mac and it does this same thing. In mine, there's a little button thing about 4 over from the left toward the top of the screen (like under the File menu). When you click it, there's a drop-down menu. Click "Float all in windows". That should take care of it. But I'm going to check out that tutorial -- if I can change it as a default, I'd must rather do that.

eta: Okay, apparently I had already had that preference (in the tutorial) checked and I think I'll still have to click "float all in windows". Pretty annoying -- there should be a preference setting to default to that.

OK, so I did some research and here is what I'm thinking is going on:

Older versions of PSE, the "Allow Floating Window" box is checked by default and by default when you open documents they open as floating windows.

PSE 9: Again the "Allow Floating Window" box is checked by default and initially it was the same that by default things opened in floating windows. Then there was an update (PSE 9.0.3 they are calling it) that fixed some things I believe mainly related to using tablets with PSE and as part of that update, it was changed so that documents would open by default as tabbed documents. One adobe person I read said that this was by customer request.

PSE 10: The "Allow Floating Windows" box is not unchecked by default. The link I gave above is a tutorial to change that. However, I believe that once you have clicked that check box, then documents will open as floating windows by default.

I hope that makes sense as is accurate.

Kresta - Did you add the update to PSE 9? If so and you have the initial install you could try uninstalling it and reinstalling it without the update. I have no idea if that will work, but if it really bugs you you could try. Or I suppose you could upgrade to 10. lol

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it happened after it did an update. I downloaded from online, so I don't know how I would go back to the initial install. Any suggestions?
