Freaking a little - tonsil surgery for Logan

I took Logan to a surgeon today to finally schedule surgery to remove his tonsil. Poor guy has been miserable for a while and the whole "wait and see" thing has gone on for 6 months. So, the surgeon's first available appointment was March 6th. Ugh... that is exactly 2 weeks before we leave on vacation. :unsure: The doc was fine with it, but I need real mom been-there-done-that advice. Doc says Logan will be recovering for a week, but then will be back to normal. Again, leaving for vacation is just 2 weeks after surgery and I'm getting more and more freaked that it's too soon. Will he be eating normally by then? What has been your experience? I need real advice because our vacation time is not flexible because it's during Spring Break and everything is paid for. Ideally I'd love to keep the surgery date but only if it really will be okay for the vacation. Advice?!
 
I got my tonsils out when I was 11...I SEEM to remember being fine and eating fine by a week. If anything after a week, my throat was just sore. But that is all I remember.

I kinda know how he feels, I was diagnosed w/tonsilitis today for the 14th time in 3 years! Ugh!
 
Kids bounce back much more quickly than adults. I don't have personal experience with my own kiddos, but know a few kids that seemed to do really well after theirs came out.
 
My best friends daughter got hers out a few years back. I remember calling to see how she was feeliung like a day or two later and she said she was basically back to normal. She said aside from some discomfort she was back up playing either that same day or the next
 
I had my tonsils out in Nov 2007 (two days before Thanksgiving). I was 27. I had strep throat for a month straight. None of the meds would get rid of it. I have dealt with tonsillitis all my life. The doctor said the older you are the harder the surgery /recovery is. After one week I was eating things like mashed potatoes, pasta, etc...softer things. Let me tell you... at the time, I would rather have kept the suckers in. That was the most painful thing i have ever been through in my life. After a week I noticed things started getting better. I went back to work only 4 days after having it done.

He's young. They say that it's a pretty easy surgery and recovery for the kids. I think he will be fine by the time you leave for vacation.

My son (was 6 at the time) bounced back to normal in about 4-5 days..I think he'll be fine to go on vacation in 2 weeks1 :) (((hugs)))
 
That's why they don't do tonsilectomies for adults unless it's an extreme case. My GP won't do one for me...even when I beg LOL.

Julie - from our experience with friends who have had it done, two weeks later will be just fine.

Yeah...it was horrible but I haven't had a sore throat since!!!! There are videos on YouTube of tonsillectomies. Pretty cool! Of course, I'm a nurse and I love that kind of stuff.
 
My daughter just had it done in November as was back to normal almost instantly. She only complained about pain for 1 day and that was it. She was back to eating normal food the same day. I think you are good to go with 2 weeks.
 
my oldest had it done 3 days before Thanksgiving when she was in 1st grade. She was able to eat some mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving day and was back in school a week after surgery.

Really, between the tubes in her ears and the tonsils coming out it was the BEST thing we've ever done! She hasn't hardly been sick since then! She's now in 7th grade and only gets a cold if anything!!
 
DS2 had his out at the beginning of August last year. He had 2 low energy days, several normal days, then a few more low energy days & that pattern went on for about 3 weeks. He was on pain meds for 5 days solid. at the docs orders and then off an on them for the next couple weeks sporadically. It was hard keeping him on soft foods, he'd sneak gold fish crackers & rice cakes when I wasn't around & that slowed up the healing. After the first couple of days he was never so bad he couldn't do anything, he'd just tired or cranky from pain sooner than normal.
 
Hi. I totally know what you are going through! My DS2 was scheduled for surgery on Valentine's day in 2005 and we had a family reunion in 2-1/2 weeks. He had his tonsils out and ear tubes put in. Because of all the ear problems, I was afraid that traveling with him on a 5-6 hour plane trip would be painful for him... not to mention oh, so much fun for us!

He was fine and was better than ever within a couple of days. Oh, and he was 15 months when he had the procedure. PM me if you want to talk details, but, really, after all the earaches and colds he had for the first year of his little life, having the surgery was a Godsend! Good luck-R
 
How old is he? Riley had her tonsils AND adenoids removed when she was 7 and it really did only take a week for her to be 100%. She was eating soft solids by day 3. Unless he has complications (which almost never happen), he'll be completely fine by the time you leave for vacation. Don't be alarmed if after a week or so he starts spitting out black stuff... Riley did that her 1st day back to school and her teacher paniced... it was just scabs come off. Gross I know, but thought I'd prepare you in case it happens with Logan.
 
Julie, my daughter was 16 years old when she had her tonsils out and was fine after a week....I do remember the Doctor prescribing her lidocaine for her throat and hydrocordone for pain....*This is when we found out she can't take hydrocordone--she had an allergic reation to it*

Good luck to Logan when he has his tonsils out! He definitely will feel a million times better without his tonsils....Knock on wood--my daughter did not have another cold after this....She suffered from when she was very little with repeated colds and bouts of tonsillitis until she had hers out....
 
I feel for you...Hillary has had chronic nasal congestion since October, due to enlarged adenoids and or water behind her ears. She never has relief...so we are trying a steroid spray starting today and I won't know for a few weeks if it is working. If not, she will have to have her adenoids removed and maybe tubes in her ears.

-I hope all goes well with his tonsillectomy...
