Flu shots?

Are any of you getting flu shots for your children? My dd has an appt. with the doctor tomorrow and since she started preschool I thought maybe I should go ahead with the flu shot. I have been against her getting it before now though!! The nurse said that they have been giving it to children 6 months and up. What do you think? Have you done this or are planning to do it??

Both of my girls had their flu shots. They are 2 1/2 & 1. My oldest had her first flu shot at 6 months. They also offered a nasal spray instead of the shot for children over the age of 2 so that is what my oldest got. Our doctor said he thought the nasal spray was more effective than the shot.

well...The one year I got mine I got sooo sick..this is back when it was like synthetic flu virus that you were injected with lol...

my kids had never gotten one but I let the ped. talk me into giving my oldest two one this year on their last appt..and my oldest has been sooo sick this season..I swear it's that darn shot. She's NEVER sick but now I can't keep her well..so..shrug..I say lots of hand washing and staying away from other kids that are sick as much as possible.

Good luck!

My kids all got flu shots once about 3 years ago and it really didn't seem to make a difference. although my dd who was 8 wasn't as sick with colds as much that winter.

I preach handwashing, handwashing, and handwashing!!! I tend to get sicker with the flu when I get the flu shot!

being in the medical field i have always been given crap for not giving my children and myself (being an asthmatic) the flu shot. i think it's one more unnecessary chemical to be injected in the body. it only prevents certain strands etc. i have seen sooo many people get the flu even after taking the shot (i'm not saying they got flu from the shot) so for my family: i'd rather keep my kids healthy, warm and pumped up on natural vitamins. :) rather than prevent a possible illness with a chemical.

Everyone got it this year since we have an infant, but I've never gotten them before. I just never get them because I have a major thing with needles; I can't say whether you should get them or not.

Im in the military and I have to get one every year....Ive been sick with the flu once in 12 years....my kids get them too and my 8 year old has probably been sick once with the flu.

I have already gotten mine.
Zak and Connor have both had theirs, but Landen hasn't...I'm debating on if I should considering he is mostly home with his dad...and if the boys and are are all immunized, then maybe he doesn't need it.

Yep..taking Avery tomorrow. He's gotten one every year since he was born. He's never had the flu...but he's never been sick at all so I'm not sure if it's due to the shot or just me being lucky lol. But I'd rather be safe than sorry. DH and I get one every year too.

Myself and the kids have never gotten one. Amelia is almost 6 and I have had to take her to the doctor once in her life, aside from checkups. Rae was 4 last week, same thing. Benjamin has always been a sickie kid, he gets his poor immune system from his dad. Tony gets the flu shot every year, and he is always the sickest of us 5 all winter. He picks up everything. I'm not blaming it on the flu shot because he was like that before he started getting it, but it hasn't helped him at all, kwim?

We do a lot of handwashing, isolation when sick (ie, I don't send the kids to school if they're sick with a cold, so they won't pass it along...I wish everyone would do this), and many vegetables and good food to keep them healthy.

If my kids got sicker more often, I would consider it, but as it is, my girls are like me, they don't pick up much. I have thought about it for Benjamin though. That poor kid and his dad have horrible immune systems. He had pneumonia twice in his first year of life. :(

We've never had them. Basically for the same reasons as Lizzy said. I'm just not convinced about it. We stick with handwashing and vitamins

My kids and I get one every year (thanks for the reminder). My dh refuses to get it every year. Every year the only one with the flu <knock on wood> is my dh. I let him stay in the bedroom alone for a week while he gets over it.

We are military so we get them every year. I personally prefer the flu mist versus the shot and it's less traumatic for my twin boys too! We are getting them on Friday!

The flu shot isn't going to stop anything but the flu. So, even with the flu shot, you'll still get just as many colds as you would get anyway.

I do think it's worth it to stop the flu, though. Especially for my son who gets seizures with the flu. This year, both my kids got the flu mist --now THAT is the way to go. No needles, no chemicals injected in your body -- just a little mist your breath in. It's worth asking about.

I am also military so I get it every year. Last year they gave us the flu mist and I am not joking, most of us felt sick before we even got off work. Our noses were stuffed, we were achy, it sucked. Nicholas just go the flu shot for the first time since he started day care and I didn't like the mist.

Mason hasn't been allowed to have shots of any type while he was on chemo, but this year we were asked at the clinic if we wanted to get him a flu shot this year (he's been off-treatment for a year so he's finally allowed his 5-year boosters and stuff too). I said no automatically because I wanted to talk to DH, but he also said no, so we won't do it.

Thanks so much for your input ladies! I guess I am going to go ahead and have them give her the shot, but I'm still not 100% sure that she actually needs it or that it will work. My mom read somewhere that it doesn't really work for children under 5 yrs old. I used to be a medical assistant and had to get the shot every year. Since I have just been at home with dd I haven't had one for years. I feel the same way, it really only covers one strain. My dh got one this year at work, so I think we will go ahead too. Thanks for the reminder about Flu mist I almost forgot about the nasal spray. I'll have to ask about it before she gets the shot.

They do think they have the "right" strain this year and believe that the shot will be effective. It was much less of a sure thing last year!

None of us have ever gotten a shot before and we've never gotten the flu. Gotten colds yes, but not the flu. Besides my 6 year old being in school, we don't meet any of the criteria of getting a shot so we never have.

We've never gotten them and we won't as long as we can get away with it. They're pushing harder and harder each year, though, especially for the kids.

i should probably add that because my children are pumped up on super amazing natural vitamins they rarely get sick and when everyone else is sick for weeks on end with whatever the flavor of the week is mine don't get it. they've also never had flu or even been close.

I don't think I'm going to have DS get one this year. I've never had one and I've never had the flu. But DH gets one every year and every year he gets sick. I think it's mental for him:)
