Fiber Internet

Y'all we just got fiber internet from AT & T yesterday and it is SCREAMING fast. We had been with Xfinity cable for years and hated it but didn't have a lot of options here.

I did some tests yesterday and I'm getting right under 1 Gbps for both downloads and uploads! My "online business that deals with tons of uploads" heart is so happy right now!

Does anyone else use fiber, or have it available and have been considering it?

Wow! I'm just under 500 Mbps with cable, and I thought that I was spoiled after AT&T telling me I was lucky to have 32. I can't imagine how fast that is.

I got fiber internet in November. I didn't even get the fastest speed available since it is only me. I think my speed is 100 mbps. I had 50 mbps with my cable internet.

Streaming was not always fun because I would have buffering. So far no buffering when I stream something now.

But I noticed the biggest difference when I purchased and downloaded kits. It took just seconds to download some of the biggest zip files. Actually a download would be done before I could even click on the next file to download! Couldn't believe how quickly I got the Black Friday stuff downloaded.

On December 1st, I signed up for iDrive, an online backup service. I did a test backup that afternoon of just one of my biggest folders. It took less than 4 hours. So I added more folders to my backup set and set up a schedule. That night it started around 11:15 and 12 hours later it was done. The total size of my backup is 668.92 GB with 350,653 files.

Last night's backup backed up 19 files (438.91 MB) in 56 seconds.

My cable also is fiber with this upgrade. I'm not with a large, national company but a small local provider. They started out as a telephone company in the late 1800's and added cable and internet in the 1990's. Great service. I might pay a little more than the large companies but if I need service, it is usually within 24 hours. And, the main office is right in my town. I can walk in and talk with them in person whenever I want. As for my bill, it didn't change. Same cost for more speed!

That's so awesome! Our bill actually went down, which is absolutely bananas to me. And yes, being able to talk to a real person is a massive advantage. Xfinity was the absolute worst with that, but so far AT&T seems to be better. *fingers crossed*

I've had Verizon FiOS for years ... it is quick. I don't have the fastest speed b/c I'm cheap, LOL.

But the only issue I've had was when both DD and I were streaming shows and my grandson was gaming ... he would sometimes buffer and whine, LOL!!!

He once came storming into the room and told me *I* needed to get off ... yeah, he lost the right to use the internet for 24 hours. Guess he forgot who pays the bill ... never happened again. Mean Memaw. :)

That's AWESOME! Enjoy every minute of it. I love fast, fast, fast internet! LOL

We're still with Xtream Mediacom and have been happy with our service. It handles my son's online gaming, which is nearly constant if he's at home and not sleeping. I can watch TV, and both hubby and son will be online as well - or I can be on my computer uploading and downloading - without any buffering. We'll also be using wifi with all three of our phones.

Our package is:
1 GIG UNLIMITED
1000 Mbps Download
50 Mbps Upload
UNLIMITED GB Data Usage

As of today, here's our usage:

Monthly cycle ends in 8 days.
730.7 GB downstream data used.
109.7 GB upstream data used.

I love to upgrade to the best/fastest service available, but this is as fast as we get right now and I really don't think we need anything more at this time.

We have fibre. I just tested the speed and it says we're at:
360 Mbps download
313 Mbps upload

I don't know what I have. Whatever it is, we've had it since we lived here. It's Internet and phone through AT&T. My computer settings show my internet info as 585/390 (Receive/transmit) (Mbps) I don't know if that's good or bad. lol

Good God, I miss my FiOS. We had it for over a decade when we lived in Plano, but five years ago we moved about a half hour away to be closer to my husband's new job. We're now in Princeton, which is just 10 minutes away from downtown McKinney, one of the biggest and wealthiest suburbs in the metroplex, but we might as well be out in the country. Our "high speed" internet feels like dial-up by comparison to FiOS.

I'm hoping and praying that they'll start running fiber lines as this area is growing exponentially. I just have to be patient (which is NOT one my strong suits.)

LOL that's amazing.

We have fiber through Cox but ours is slowed down by our mesh router which we need because we have a long ranch house so without the mesh, the signal is bad or non-existent on the far side of the house. I've been debating trying a new mesh router but everything is stable and working now so I hate to mess with it.

That's awesome Tracie!!
I think we have Xfinity cable because just recently had issues and now I see a bright orange cable going to a pole - lol.
I just ran a test:

Not a clue if that's good or bad - ha ha, but it does okay for what I use it for.

Our Xfinity was horrrrrible here. I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but it was constantly going down for no reason. And every time it rained hard (which is a lot here lol) the cables to our house would come down and we'd have to wait for them to come fix them. So frustrating.

We got Google Fiber last year and boy it was a huge improvement!! So great! I'm guilty of keeping like 30 tabs open etc so having speed is nice :D

Fiber isn't available in our area. It's slowly (very slowly) being moved in. Our internet has decent speeds, so it's not too frustrating.

Yay Australia & our crappy internet! Although we did just get rid of Starlink & went to fibre & haven't noticed any drop in speed or quality.

we swore off at&t internet altogether. we kept their cell service but honestly if there were an option I'd dump that too. We had an outage and tried to report it but had some of the most abusive (verbally abusive yes!) agents ever. They rarely honor anything they say and accused us of having an issue. We knew the line was cut and lots of people were out but when my husband was a day from starting a new work from home job, they wouldn't help us. We got Tmobile Home and we do get great speeds most of the time. In the end, my husband walked the tech to the area where the line had been cut and showed him (there was a group working on it already) and confirmed my husband was right all along. It's sad they treat people that way. If you never have an issue, you don't have to worry about it. But if you can avoid it, never call after 5 or on weekends. The men from the overseas locations are very verbally abusive particularly to women although they were rude to my husband too. Sad sad sad.

We've had fiber internet since we moved into our house in december 2018, and it is amazing. we upgraded to gig fiber around 18 months ago and our bill went down too haha. love it

We have fiber thorough Google and we also have our mobile phones with Google Fi. I will never use AT&T again. The customer service is awful. We moved into our house 15 years ago and we had Uverse cable with them. We had a great price bc we one of the first to get it at the time and they tore up our yard installing it. When we moved they said we are now considered new customers and they wouldn't honor the price. I cancelled cable and haven't looked back. :)
We have been pretty happy with Google for internet and phones. I think it runs on Tmobile's network just cheaper.

I can't imagine not having fast internet. I'm so glad it is now available to you!

I live in NJ, so everything is pretty fast around these parts. I do have an extra step up than most people. My husband works for Verizon as a lineman... so he can install and troubleshoot it. lol!

When I got my new phone in December, Verizon tried really hard to get me to switch my internet to them. I said no thanks, I'm quite happy with my fiber cable/internet from the local cable/internet/phone company. I think I had to say no about 5 times before they quit asking. And, I don't know of anyone in my small town that has internet through Verizon. It is mostly the local company, Spectrum or Dish.

I have no idea what internet we have. It's through Verizon, that's all I know, LOL! I don't really have any problems with it, though.

By me, Cablevision and Xfinity are popular behind Verizon. I don’t know if Dish is even offered. My home internet is different than wireless… though they are both Verizon, the are separate sections of VZ, and 2 bills. My home bill is super cheap and gets all the bells and whistles since DH works for them. We get a discount on the wireless side of things too, just not as much. Our rural areas in NJ probably get as good of service as I do in the burbs.

Dish is usually the people that live outside city limits aka the country since cable/internet has been slow to expand to those areas. Spectrum is only in town because it bought out Warner which has been the main cable provider in town for years and were the only cable provider until the 1990's when the telephone company went into the internet and cable business. Since I don't have someone living in my house that can fix things when they go wrong, I love my small town company. When I need service, it is usually within 24 hours since all repair crews are local. Spectrum has been known to take 3 to 5 days since the repair individuals are not local but coming from at least an hour away.

Of course, when I first got on the internet, it was through the phone lines... now that was SLOW!!!!!!!

We have had verizon forever here in Eastern PA... in 2020 we upgraded it to the fastest they offered, (4 kids home to be online, and stream and me to scrap) its still pretty fast, I'm sure they have faster now, but since some have moved out since then, we are good.

We have xfinity and I do loathe them, but I feel like it's so hard to break all of our services up, so we always end up staying with them. We had the 1200 MBPS plan, but I spent 2 hours (!!!!) negotiating our bill down yesterday. I ended up getting it discounted by $45/month (saving us $540/year) in exchange for going to 800 MBPS. When I would run speed tests, I was finding we were always in the 600-700 range and not really utilizing the 1200. We also got a new Samsung phone thrown in for the lower price??

We did lose a couple of bundle prices on services we had through xfinity, so I totally get that. It's definitely going to be cheaper for us though, even with that, and the speed is sooo worth it to me.
