Fashion-forward gals, I need some help!

OKay, I really do *try* to stay on top of trends and be somewhat fashionable. I didn't pay attention all through high school or even university when I actually had the body to fit INTO fashionable clothes. Two kids later I like to own one or two pieces that make me feel like a put-together grownup. :) It doesn't help that people who live around me and my church have $$$. I feel SO out of place! My friends and I don't really care so muc about clothes, so as I'm shopping for a new winter coat, and boots and accessories I have no idea what is in style right now.

Any tips on fall/winter clothing trends?

big slounchy coats are out! cute fitted jackets are in...gap and old navy always have cute ones. tweed apparently is in too, by the looks of things, but i don't love tweed. what about a cute lil pair of pointy toed boots with a kitten heal. those will be cute all through fall, even to church, and you can get a pair reasonable. they look super with boot cut jeans. :) hmmm....bronze is in too this fall! what about a big hobo bag in a jewel tone to go with everything. a good handbag is key!

Yeah, I have a few pairs of nice boots (tall leather ones, and slouchy ankle ones) but havn't done the pointy toe-kitten heel yet! Maybe I should just be brave and go for it. :)
I just bought a fabulous green bag, with gold buckles (it's not TOO buckly though!) which I am madly in love with.

Now I just have to find a nice coat. Oy! My every-day coat is a ski jacket from EIGHT years ago.

If you don't want to spend a lot on clothes, pick up some great assessories to spice up what you have. Big chunky necklaces, etc ... also shoes and stylish coats can really make you look put together and you get more bang for your buck since you are likely to wear them more often.

yep...you know what?! i have like these 4 big chunky rings that i rotate on my right middle finger. a couple gold ones, a silver one, a gold and silver one and they make me look really cool! :p really...jewelry is a dead give-a-way that your put together.

Okay, this is OT! After I read your post, I went shoe shopping, lookie what I found! I'm so excited! I love Bronx shoes!

Ya'll are making me feel like white trash! LOL
I don't go anywhere to dress up (yeah, I should be going to church on a regular basis though) and my job requires conservative clothes but you get REALLY dirty there so buying nice stuff is pretty much out of the question as it's not really a necessity or need.
I do try to keep up on the latest trends though because in my alternate life I'm a sassy, sexy, career woman with a rich hubby and kids in boarding school. LOL!

I love these:
red trench
Black Walker

To be honest I wouldnt worry about what's in style. You can never go wrong with classic pieces. A dark colored wool pea-coat will pull together any outfit for a coat. A nice pair of dark denim boot cut jeans. A crisp white shirt. You'll never be out of style.

ummmm...whoa! i need one pair in every color!!! esp. those mustard colored ones....ahhh...i wub them with a cute lil navy pea coat!

Okay, I'm not sure that I'm there YET. *LOL*
LOL, I happen to be wearing a very similar version of these today :) I *heart* funky shoes and coats! Everyone at work makes fun of the volume of coats I own (every color). I have this awesome faux fur coat that I can't wait for winter to wear.

Sometimes you have to go out of your comfort zone with clothes. Every once in a while, my good friend and I go get a drink and then go shopping ... after a glass a wine, you're much more likely to buy something you wouldn't normally buy. My friend always comments that some of her best buys were made on our trips.

I think this mandarin collar jacket from Old Navy is really cute -

It also comes in a charcoal gray color and I think it would look great with a cute fitted top underneath and some dark wash bootcut jeans and boots!

so true! or just to shop in general with friends who are hip to the cool cat, (:p) cause they'll make you try on crap you normally wouldn't and then you realize how cute you look in something you would've otherwise just passed up completely.

I  this coat and I'm getting it for myself come fall :) (And the shoes are dead sexy too :p)

And I'm excited for fall cuz I can wear the black leather jacket I bought last fall again :)

A nice fitted peacoat never goes out of style. They're everywhere lately. Pair it with a nice colorful scarf and your outerwear is good to go.

I love the one Col posted, although I'm short, so I do a hip-length one in that style and it works perfectly for me.

I'm pretty much obsessed wtih Red :)
And I HATE shorter winter coats cuz I inevitably need to sit somewhere outside and then my butt freezes, lol.

Jordan's parents got me a similar one last year or the year before, but it doesn't fit. I never told them and now it's too late to exchange it. So, I'll buy this one and pretend it's the one they gave me and they'll be none the wiser :p

ETA: Sarah I linked it. Victoria's Secret. :)

Oooh Col, that coat is GORGEOUS.
I can spend a little money and get myself something like that in two years after the kids stop drooling and spitting up me. :)
