Extractions....

I do mine the old fashioned way LOL.

I blow up the pic super huge, and just use the eraser very slowly around the edges. I have done this a lot over the years in my sig tag days, so I'm pretty quick at them, even if they are a PITA. Sometimes after I'm done, I might go around the edge with a softer eraser brush, depending on how it looks, or what kind of LO it will be.

Sorry, no easy tips here! And I just use a mouse.

i generally use the magnetic lasso combined with the magic wand tool. I clean it up with the eraser. I'm sure there are easier ways to do it, but what I do works for me. I have a tablet but have not used it for extractions.

That's how I do it, too.

I use layer masks! that way i can easily undo something b/c I can unmask it. Masks rule.

eta: I just use the touchpad of my laptop.

Depending on the background, I will either use the magnetic lasso tool or manually erase. I usually add a feather to the edges and then go over with a large soft eraser brush.

Like Jamie said, I got pretty good in my Sig tag days and it really is true that you'll get better with practice.

I use masks too, that way I can go back and erase my mask and touch it up before I go deleting anything.

Can you explain how to do it with a mask Mimi? I'm curious because I've never tired it that way!

And I always just duplicate the photo I'm working with so I have an original if I don't like the extraction, LOL!

I use PSE5 and there is a magic eraser selection that looks like a pink eraser with a white asterik above it. Here is what my program says about the Magic Eraser...
The Magic Eraser tool changes all similar pixels when you drag in a photo. If you?re working in a layer with locked transparency, the pixels change to the background color; otherwise, the pixels are erased to transparency. You can choose to erase contiguous pixels only or all similar pixels on the current layer.

Basically, it means that when I click on something that I want to erase, it erases everything that is that color that is connected to the pixel I clicked on.

Then I just go back and "clean up" stray pixel areas with the eraser.

I have PS CS and I just go under Fliter-->Extract and do it that way and then clean up the edges if need be. I don't know if there is a certain term the way I do it. LOL I read on a blog somewhere how to do it that way and that is just how I have done it since. I am really wanting to get a tablet and see if it is any easier that way. I would love to hear more from people who use one for extractions. :)

 I was afraid someone would ask . . .

I found this tut @ DigiScrappingTutorials.com.
http://digiscrappingtutorials.com/Index.asp?Type_ID=3
click on Introduction to Layer Masks for PSE 3, 4, 5, 6
(I use PS CS3 and use the Quick Mask but it's the same concept)

also this video tut @ DigitalScrapbookingTV.com may help too

I tried and tried with my mouse, I never could get could clean lines - I don't know if its just my shaky hand or what but the pen for me is a MUST.

Hehehe...do I smell a sig tag challenge here at SSD?? LOL wonder how many taggers are really here! I did tags too and the tuts for them at a site called Sweetest Harmony

I have photoshop cs3 and I do quick select and then go in and refine the edge, pretty quick and painless. It works for me anyhow :)

Magnetic lasso and the new quick selection tool in PSE6 (i think its like a layer mask). I still make siggy's on a parenting forum (justmommies.com) thats how i got so good. It takes practice. and some pics are easier than others!

I did tags at an MSN group called SBlended PSP which I coan for several years before I quit last year. I had my own tut site for a year or so as well.

Oh I loooove doing this but I dont have a 'simple' or 'fast' method.
I use the layer mask approach just in case I need to reshow something I have hidden unintentionally. I also super zoom to get to the finer detail.

I prefer to work with larger brushes and only use smaller ones at the end to get to really tricky spots. With a larger brush you can remove very small areas by having the brush further away from the extraction point and you can still get straight lines by moving the brush a little closer. I protect areas that I dont want my larger brush to touch by using the selection tool to select the area I want protected and then invert that selection to start the removal process.
