esophageal spasms?

anyone have any knowledge or experience with these?

i took some medication right before bed night before last [nothing new there] and instantly felt like the pill got stuck in my throat. didn't think any more of it... this morning i woke up in excruciating pain focused right under my breast bone. all day long i've had a shortness of breath, with pain radiating outward through my chest and had a tough time swallowing anything.

a friend said it sounded like esophageal spasms related to reflux... but i've never had any signs or issues with reflux before and have never had these symptoms before. can you have reflux, yet never have any symptoms of it or experience any discomfort from it?

i started to look online... but geesh. talk about info overload. i'm hoping to get the doctor tomorrow... but am curious if these spasms are linked to other [less serious] issues. any thoughts, suggestions, advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
My dad has had esophageal issues his whole life... actually his sphincter is narrow and if he eats something that irritates it (steak, beer, watermelon, etc) or stress... it would cause spasms until he couldn't breathe. Today, it's controlled by a prevacid every day.

My family suffers a lot of acid reflux and you can have it without symptoms or you can have something odd like a cough that never goes away and it's because of GERD.

Hope it's nothing serious!!
 
I've never heard of this before but I hope it isnt serious!
I have had that feeling when a pill gets stuck in my throat forever, but I've never had that happen afterwards.
 
Yes it is reflux. I have it. And sometimes it feels like something is stuck and it won't go down. And it does hurt! I take Nexium, the little purple pill for mine.
 
Yep..I ended up in the ER the first time I experienced it. I thought I was having a heart attack. They gave me a GI cocktail and it was better in half an hour. I had silent reflux too and took Prilosec for a while but it stopped working as well. Now I take Prevacid once a day. I never had classic reflux symptoms..just pain in my chest and esophagus and some burning in my stomach. As long as I take meds that work I'm good to go.
 
YES! This is what happened to me back in December. After going to the doctor and it being diagnosed as reflux she gave me meds (and of course I can't remember what it was) that helped "repair" my esophagus. After just one day of the meds I was able to eat again and the pain was gone. I only took the meds for a month to make sure it was ok.

I dealt with it for almost a week before I went for help. Next time I'll be at the dr. the next day.
 
well... i'm beyond frustrated at this point. i spent 4 hours in the hospital... and once they heard chest pain... they ran every heart, liver, kidney, gallbadder test they had available. then when all of that came back normal, they gave me a GI cocktail and a double dose of Pepcid AC... 40 minutes later, no relief. so then came a series of xrays and tons of blood work.

the doctor comes back in and says i'm super healthy and they still can't seem to diagnose what exactly is wrong. why/what is causing this horrific pain in my chest, shortness of breath and why i can't swallow anything without severe pain [haven't eaten in 3 days]. in end he said he was sure it was upper GI related and that stress might have a lot to do with it. it was all i could do not to punch him in the throat. i LOVE that if they can't figure it out in a few hours they're just "done with you" and then chalk everything up to "stress". i was thrilled that they discharged me so that i could wait two more days [with this level of pain] to follow up with my regular doctor so that he can refer me to an upper GI specialist. ??? seriously. the doctor at the hospital can't refer me??? i'm am so dissappointed and frankly, mad as hell.
 
OMG Loni, what a quack that doctor was! I'm so sorry, that sounds really horrible :( I hope you can get to your regular doctor earlier.
 
Loni - that sounds horrible!! I also hope you'll be able to get some relief soon!! Doctors really stink sometimes. :(

I have a hiatal hernia that causes me to have silent reflux but is usually only bad enough to need treatment when I'm doing a lot of singing (which hasn't been the case for quite a while now). When I was first diagnosed, I had never had problems with heartburn that I could feel, but I did have a lump in my throat for several weeks/months. I had an upper GI scope that showed some damage to my esophagus, but after being on meds for a while, the lump went away and my esophagus repaired itself. It was never really painful . . . it just felt strange. Now that I know what it is, I can tell when I'm aggravating my hernia, and I can be a little more careful with it.

What you're going through sounds really awful. I hope you'll get it figured out soon. HUGS!!

I have to have my esophagus stretched every few years because food, or large pills/tablets get stuck in my throat at times.

My dad also has this too (has the hernia along with narrow throat)... luckily I don't think they do the throat stretch anymore, at least that is what his doctor told him...

Oh, Loni - how frustrating... but typical... many family members have had the same frustrations when dealing with a hospital/ER... I don't know why they can't redirect you to the doctor that is needed, but it always has to come back to the primary to refer a person... but I won't go down the road about my thoughts about the medical industry... :D

I hope you get some relief, extremely soon!
