EHD Recommendations

So, my Western Digital EHD just died...right before NSD. :crying: I'm not panicking (yet) because I back up everything onto two EHD's, so my files are safe, but I obviously need to go ahead and order another one.

Is there a certain brand you recommend? I'm disappointed that my WD has kicked the bucket when it's not even that old, so I'm not sure I want to order another of that brand. :thumbdown:
 
I have both western digital and seagate. The seagate one is my primary one and have not had issues (KNOCKING ON THE WHOLE ENTIRE FREAKING FOREST OF WOOD)
 
I had a Seagate, and it died a horrible death and I lost six months of stuff because I hadn't been backing up. It worked great up until then, though, lol.
 
I've had failed EHD's more times than I want to remember and have used numerous brands. No EHD is fail-proof which is why I now backup twice but overall...WD and Seagate are the industry standards for quality (according to my computer guy I trust).
 
Mine are all Seagate. It's not that I necessarily prefer them to another brand, they were just what Costco had on sale. I have 2 "travel" EHDs with supplies and photos and a larger "home" EHD that backs everything up, plus backup with Backblaze (yes, I'm a little paranoid!).

I don't know if one brand is better than the other.

I'm sorry your EHD died, Kendall. You're the 2nd person that I've heard that from in the last week. :(
 
I'm sorry yours died! I've had mostly WD EHDs, and I don't know if I'll buy another. The drives themselves have lasted well, but I only use them for a backup once every few weeks. What I've had a lot more problems with are their included backup software. On my last 2 EHDs, the software randomly stopped working after a few years and tech support (and the powers of the Internet) couldn't figure out why. The files were still there, but new files weren't being backed up even though there was plenty of space. In both cases I ended up having to delete the backup, buy a different company's software, then start over using the same EHD.

I had three Seagates die within months of each other. I now have a WD, but I only plug it in every now and then to store old supplies. I'm flyin' by the seat of my pants! Good luck finding a new one!
 
I have a seagate one for more than 7 years now, which is only 1TB and still physically big and heavy. My husband owns 2 Toshiba ones, which are so much smaller and handy to carry around.
 
My son used to work in a computer shop and he always recommends WD. I had a couple of seagate ones that never caused me a problem but he made me switch over to WD .
 
Western Digital all the way. I have several though so there is always one with a backup of the other. One for just photos, one for just scrapping, one for both (that I use when I scrap) and one huge 8TB one to backup my entire mac on (which I intend to use every month, but end up forgetting and usiing once every 6 months). If you can splurge though, consider getting a solid state drive SSD instead as they're "safer" than the traditional EHD.
 
Oh man, sorry for your "loss." I have used the same Western Digital Passport for a very long time (probably 10 years), so this is something that's been on my mind lately, especially after a friend really did lose all of her layouts and supplies. Back in the day, I actually backed up all my .psd's and kit .zips to CD's, too. But now that I'm jumping back into scrapbooking, I'm taking a different course since I'm on a Chromebook. My layouts will be stored in the cloud, too, but not sure what I'm gonna do about kits. My EHD still has a lot of space, but I'm thinking microSD for short-term storage. I don't know...organization is always a challenge. Good luck with your decision!
