Eeek! My motherboard is fried!

Yes, what a major PITB! My new Dell laptop died! Luckily, we got it in for service before the warranty was up. I'm hoping it won't cost me a thing to get it fixed, but we'll see.

In the meantime, I'm using my super-crappy 6 year old laptop. The spacebar sticks so I'm constantly backspacing to add a space between words. :cursing:

AND, my new QT girl is on my EHD, but I can't really use her right now because PS CS2 runs super slow on this piece of junk. I might try to at least get her added here tonight.

Ugh, don't get me started. LOL!

Yeah, I hate to knock Dell but I had NOTHING but problems with my Dell laptop from 2001-2004 in college. Now I have an HP laptop and HP had to replace my first one I received b/c it sucked, and the one I have now is good but my next laptop will certainly be an Apple! I'm done with PCs!

Dell should cover it all if it's still under warranty. (And I always buy an extended warranty b/c someone inevitably ends up breaking 2 years into owning it and that 3 year warranty comes in handy!)

I had my motherboard replaced on my Dell about 6 or 8 months ago...because I'm still paying for it (4 year plan, lol), everything is under warranty. They changed out the motherboard and power supply totally free, sent someone to our house to do it. I ended up only being without a computer for 2 days.

That reminds me...I have to find a block of 15 hours to deal with calling HP to send in my computer that's under warranty until October to have the DVD burner replaced! UGHHHH....

One of my least favorite things to do in this world is calling technical support for computer companies to get a problem resolved. It seriously stresses me out just thinking about it.

I hear ya on that one Mikkel. My first first laptop was a really nice HP, and as soon as I got to college with it, it started having problems. I sent it in 3 times to replace hte fan. Finally on the 4th time, I asked every single person who gave me a hard time to put me on with their supervisor. And once I got to a supervisor, I said look, this the 4th time this sucker is coming in for the same problem. If you can't fix it, I want a new damn unit.

They sent me a brand new laptop which was actually an upgrade because they no longer made my model. And that sucker had zero problems and I loved it. It's just old and beat up and can't handle photoshop. So I've gotta upgrade. :)

Just be firm with them Mikkel. When they realize they're dealing wtih someone who knows what they're talking about, they are MUCH less apt to make you jump through hoops. I just went through it with AT&T for a replacement Blackberry.

I'm convinced every computer brand has problems because we've always had good luck with our Dells (until now), but I've known 2 people who had HPs who have died. It seems like it's random luck.

100% random luck. You never know when you're gonna get 1 defective thing that screws everything up, lol.

my hubby does tech support for HP. He's on servers now, but he used to do laptops and he said the same thing about it being pretty much random luck. Sometimes there are across-the-board problems w/ a certain make/model of laptop. But mostly its just a fluke problem that is totally unforseen.
I know tech support people are hard to deal with, but try and remember that they spend their ENTIRE shift literally getting yelled at for something they had no control over. Its a pretty tough job. Oh, and also be thankful if you get an english-speaking techie. So many of our jobs are getting outsourced to India and Costa Rica (HP sucks about that) that hardly anyone on tech support is american anymore, which tends to make communication just that much harder.

Ugh that's exactly what happened to my HP desktop back in December. My BIL was hoping it was just the power supply (which had gone out once before 2 years prior) but unfortunately it ended up being the motherboard. I'm hoping to get a new desktop soon and he's going to put the old hard drive which he says is fine into the new computer so I can access the stuff that was on there. Luckily most of the important stuff was on my EHD's so I've been able to use that with my DH's laptop. At least yours is under warranty - hope they can fix it quickly or replace it!

Yeah, first the USB ports started acting up, but when my network card went out late last week, DH knew immediately (he's a computer guy) it was the motherboard. I'm just so glad I didn't wait to act on it, because it turns out the last day of my warranty was the day I called!

that's the conclusion I've come to too so now I don't even really care about the brand. We used to get HP desktops and they all died with 3 years. My HP notebook had problems with the power cord port. So when we replaced our desktop I got a cheap eMachine and for my laptop a cheap Acer.

Sorry about your motherboard :( but, whew, thank goodness you were still under warranty!

i just went thru that a few months back! i feel your pain!:( and hope that you get everything resolved ASAP!

Eeek, my Dell had the motherboard go on it also, three power supplies, one hard drive, and now it's dead again, I don't know or care what it is this time, I'm not getting it fixed LOL. I totally feel your pain, really I do. I hope it's an easy fix!
