Edamame (for those that were asking)

Ok, so I made this layout last night about my love of edamame and I got several people asking me what exactly edamame is!
So, here you go ladies...

First, its pronounced "Ed-a-mom-ay". Edamame is soy beans. You steam them (or at least I do) and put a bit of salt on them. Then you eat them (only the beans on the inside of the pods) and they are SUPER delicious and very nutritious. I can't describe the taste, but its not "vegetable-y" at all. Just...well... yummy!

Here's a more "offical description" from edamame.com...

Edamame is a green vegetable more commonly known as a soybean, harvested at the peak of ripening right before it reaches the "hardening" time. The word Edamame means "Beans on Branches," and it grows in clusters on bushy branches. To retain the freshness and its natural flavor, it is parboiled and quick-frozen. In East Asia, the soybean has been used for over two thousand years as a major source of protein. Edamame is consumed as a snack, a vegetable dish, used in soups or processed into sweets. As a snack, the pods are lightly boiled in salted water, and then the seeds are squeezed directly from the pods into the mouth with the fingers.

We buy the soybeans already out of shell/pod in the freezer section. I just put them with a little water and salt in the microwave and cook them a bit (not too much or they get too mushy for me). Even the three kids will eat them! They are great alone and the kids and my dh even put them on their pizza! I would describe the taste as a bit nutty - not veggy at all! I ate them constantly when I prego with the twins too since they are a great source of protein and I don't eat that much meat.
 
one of my friends told me that on her 1st encounter with edamame she ate the outer pod. (i couldn't help it, I laughed)

to me they taste kind of buttery . . . i love them! I think I will get some on my next trip to Costco

jenny, you and i are pretty much edamame masters of the universe. why is it that everytime we hang out the edamame makes an appearance?!? xo

p.s. after you steam them, i suggest course sea salt, not table salt.
 
I buy them in the pods in the freezer section in a bag that is "steam ready". All I do is pop them in the microwave for a few minutes and the bag steams them to perfection!! And yes, sea salt is best imo.
And I also agree that they are bit nutty and buttery and just down right delicious!

I have heard of it before but have never had it... I might have to get some the next time I go food shopping
 
What a fun LO! LOL! We love edamame but I haven't bought it for awhile. I am going to add it to our Costco or Trader Joe's list. YUM!
 
So now I'm definitely going to have to try this! I saw them in the grocery store last week (in the ready steam bags) and was wondering if they were any good. Sounds like a good reason to pick up some sushi as well. :D
 
I love edamame! I prefer the already shelled kind but either is hard to find around here. Which is really odd because I know a guy who's family grows hundreds of acres of them only 100 miles away.
 
I need to go find me some! Its something I've been meaning to try out for a long time! We use lots of soy already but havent tried these yet.
 
I like snacking on edamame, too! The only problem is that I haven't figured out how to eat them at work. Can they be steamed somehow in a microwave?

OH YES! you can buy them in convenient little micro packs at sams club (you get 8 packs), they even come with their own individual sea salt packets. you micro them for three minutes and voila perfect steamy deliciousness at your fingertips. ;)
