I'm always up for better ways on doing dropshadows! I use CS2 and usually set mine at 75% opacity, color 3d2908, distance - 7, spread - 0, size - 12. It varies with different elements. For elements that are more raised off the page, I turn the dropshadow into another layer and (here's my favorite bit) use the Warp tool to bend them to submission
This is the way I do them also but I have just found the warp tool and that thing is giving me fits!!!
