Dog Questions: Female incontinence

Coco is fixed, she's almost 3, but she leaks. Anyone have this problem with their dog? Do you use anything over the counter or did you get a prescription from your vet?

Anyone have a ball park idea of what the urine test costs? They said that's how they figure out if she has it.

Our dog is incontinent as a side effect of anti-seizure medicine she had to take for a while. We give her Proin (she has a prescription). It manages the problem really well, and it's not very expensive. Allivet is a great online source for ped medications.

Our Lucy does. The vet said it is a side effect of her breed and the fact that she is fixed. Had we left her intact (they say) it wouldn't have been an issue. I thought she was just an excitable little dog.. She's our first small breed dog EVER so it really threw me for a loop. I guess it is common in small breeds. It was the first time we've ran across such a problem. The vet gave us some drops but she hated them. I need to go back and get pills to try instead.

We used Proin too and it works really good, but you have to be testing every once in a while for UTIs just in case.

As a vet tech, I would advise you to go see your regular veterinarian. They will likely try to collect a urine sample from her and test it for signs of urinary infection. It may be a simple (or complex, ya never know!) bug that could be cleared up with a round (or two) of antibiotics. And, I would agree with Dalis - if it is urinary incontinence - Proin works well to tighten/help control the urinary sphincter to prevent leaks. Hope that helps some! Feel better soon, Coco!

Our friend's girl dog has this problem and I think they told us it was hormonally related. They use medicine for her but they also put her in a doggy diaper at night. :)
