Do you brush your dogs teeth?

I think I'm going to have to try brushing Peanut's teeth. That is not something people around here really do, but her breath is BAD and I think she might have some teeth in trouble. I've heard that some people take their dogs to the vet and have them professionally cleaned, but if anyone in my city did that they'd get laughed at.

So I bought this little finger brush thing and some toothpaste but I have no idea how it's going to go. I'm probably going to take her to the vet to get checked out anyway.

I give my dog a doggie tooth brush (the kind they chew up) every day. We do take a look at his teeth regularly to make sure there are no weird changes going on in there. He's never had bad breathe......yet *knock on wood* From what I've read, it's only necessary to bring him to the vet to get them cleaned if you notice a heavy tartar build up (unless of course there are other symptoms as well).

Yeah I think dog's breath just stinks. Could be diet related too.

But that being said, we don't brush our dog's teeth, we give raw soup bones which help with tartar build up. But we don't give them every day. Maybe once a month. The vet has never said anything about his teeth either.

I have a special toothbrush that is a V-shape with bristles on either side. I put this peanut butter toothpaste on it and brush our Chihuahua's teeth. He tries to chew the brush, which is fine, but we've been able to keep his teeth decent

Well, our first try with the brush didn't go badly, not sure how effective it was though. I just don't want to have her put under for teeth cleaning unless I have to.

What is the brand? I was looking at a whole wall of them at Petsmart and I got overwhelmed and wondered if they were gimicky.

We don't brush our dog's teeth. We do give him dental bones because our vet recommended we get his teeth cleaned. We are hoping we won't have to pay the $200 to get his teeth cleaned under anesthesia!

Dog´s breath is usually related to diet.
If you haven´t change the diet and this bad breath is new and sudden, you should take your dog to the vet, because may be symptom of something else

We give Taz clean breath/fluoride drops to his water and brush his teeth with the little red finger brush but it doesn't do a great job. He gets a lot of tartar so will be going in for his first cleaning this summer.

I try but my current pup isn't too keen on it so it's not too fruitful. We do feed her raw carrots and apples and that's really good for her and for teeth too. If your pup's breath is bad definitely check the diet.

Mabel is only 4.5 months, but we bought her a toothbrush and paste to get her accustomed to it. But mainly she gets Greenies or Minties, both of which are good for their teeth. And she will only get dry kibble, no canned food (which is worse for their teeth).

Dogs and cats can both have really bad teeth problems...one of my cats actually had to have teeth pulled. If tooth decay gets too bad then it can cause a lot of other health problems. I'd just ask your vet to check your dog's teeth when you go in next time.

We give our dog Greenies. There is NO way she'd be okay with actual toothbrushing. She loves Greenies and would do anything for them, so it's not a struggle to have her eat them. My vet sells them, so I'm hopeful they are worthwhile. I buy them from Amazon though.

We also use Greenies or Minties (Pedigree makes an awesome disk minty).
We are currently contemplating getting each of our 3 mini dachshunds teeth professionally cleaned at our vet. The baby has a baby tooth she didn't lose inbetween 2 other teeth and needs to have it removed and they will clean her teeth while in the process. This will be the 1st time we have had them professionally cleaned by our vet. The Greenies and Minties seem to work really well for our dogs as the vet has not stated they have tartar build up.

Oh that's a good question!
I think the we failed at doing that when they were just little puppies because now it's much more complicated... they really don't like brushing their teeth specially the femeale ones! It's always a war! :(
There are some meat taste toothpaste that they say dogs like but I can't find them here in my city, just fruity/chocolate.... I'm not sure dogs like these! :/ We have no success here!
We give them bones and cookies who help with tartar and they really LOVE these snacks but they still have bad breath and I'm afraid they get more trouble because their teeth looking are not so white, you know?

It seemed like the Greenies were expensive, at least for my liking, especially since I pay for special grain-free easy-to-digest food. I think I'll make an appt today and ask the vet a slew of questions. She is a pug-chihuahua mix and I wonder if either breed is notorious for teeth problems. Like, I know pomeranians do. I'll update this thread after I talk to him in case he gives me info that is helpful for anyone else.

Chihuahua's are notorious for periodontal disease & retained baby teeth/missing permanent teeth! :( We had a chihuahua & he had all of the above. It is SUPER important to keep their teeth clean & healthy- since abscesses/infection can spread & cause many other health problems. We now have an english bulldog & while she's not a big fan of it- she does let me brush her teeth & even lets me use a scaler (I'm a dental hygienist!) to bust some of the new tartar off.

Like previous posters said- the greenies as well as carrots/apples do a good job to stretch out professional cleanings for doggies- it's still recommended every few years.
