DigiScrapping vs. Photobooks

Do you ever get this?

you - "I'm into digital scrapbooking"

other - "Oh, I do that too. Which one do you use?"

you - "Huh?"

other - "I use ____ [fill in the blank with Shutterfly, Winkflash, Snapfish, etc.]"

I know it's petty, but it's starting to drive me a little crazy that people think that's digi-scrapping, when I spend a heck of a lot more time actually digi-scrapping. :) In the scheme of life, it's no big deal. But I feel like I'm having to explain the difference all the time; and the people I'm explaining to are not really 'getting' it. Am I the only one having to explain this?

MY SIL has asked if I used Shutterfly or Smilebox but she understands the difference. People ask if I use those services and I tell " I make it from stratch". They usually seem to catch on. I just explain politely that I buy kits and make all my pages myself and then print them into a book and that my pages are my creations. I understand your frustration. You work hard and what others are doing is more like using quickpages.

i haven't had those conversations with anyone but when i do show someone what i "do" they give me a really blank stare.

Yeah, someone said that to me a few weeks ago..."love your pages! Where do you get them?" Uhmmm...I make them myself!

hehe... I haven't dealt with that yet, but I can see how that's annoying. lol
Most people don't understand digi scrappin' so I always have to give a nice lengthy explanation when people ask about my hobbies and my job. Even after I explain, they still don't get it.

I like the "make it from scratch" idea. Not many people I know really get what digiscrap is either, but I do like that things like smilebox, shutterfly, etc. get people started. I know I looked at having a premade shutterfly album just to hurry and get one done for our moms--they like the way they look-- but seeing something you worked in print is so gratifying!

I haven't had that, but when I was showing someone one of my books, they were like "Oh, you can print it and have an actual scrapbook? I thought you just did it on the computer." me - Yes, I have "actual scrapbooks" LOL

I was going to say, I think I'd be happy to have someone mention Shutterfly because at least they're sort of in the right ballpark. All I ever get is a really confused blank stare. :D

Yes! There was a booth set up at our county fair a couple of weeks ago with "digital scrapbooking" stuff. I grabbed a brochure when I walked by and it was an online service that basically had quickpages and premade projects that you could just drop your pictures into. Very pretty and neat and fine in its' own right. My mom saw it too and made a point to tell me that there was a digi-scrapping booth at the fair. Ummm, no, sorry but that is NOT my idea of digital scrapbooking. :p

That's digital quick-paging! LOL Don't people get that it's exactly like paper scrapping, pieces and all, but done on the computer? How hard is that to understand?

Yes, it bugs me. Probably more than it should. :p

But what bugs me even MORE is when I send out photocard throughout the year... I usually do Easter/Spring, Birthday, Fall, Christmas.... and people say "oh yeah, I do those at WalMart too!"

Ummm... no. LOL.

I've had people look at my stuff and they talk about how pretty they are but they really don't get how much goes into one page until I explain that each little element they see is a separate thing that has to be sized, rotated and placed exactly where i want it, and layered with other elements and shadowed. They seem to understand it better when I say, "see that little staple? That is a separate piece too, just like that flower, ribbon, frame, etc". It's hard to explain to someone who really has no idea. Then to try and explain that you have to have an editing progam and that Picassa really isn't what I'm talking about.

Oh, this annoys me to no great end, honestly. They honestly don't have a clue how much work and thought and... well... practice! goes into a page. Because let's face it, we're all 300 times better than we were when we first started.

I get really weird comments on my facebook regarding my layouts actually.

I don't get this anymore as I carry an 8x8 scrapbook in my purse.

What is worse....(in my opinion atleast) is I've been designing for almost 4 years...and I have a relatively intelligent family....who just doesn't get it. They seem to STILL think that I make my money by scrapping. They just can't wrap their minds around it.

LOL Lena, I know what you mean! My standard answer to "what do you do?" is "I work from home designing scrapbooking products from my computer." Well some of my family get it (like my mom). But I had a call from a gal at my dentist office a few weeks ago asking if I carried an inventory (like Creative Memories) that she could come do some shopping cause she needed a new album. ummmmm.... no. LOL

Yeah, it's harder to explain than actual digi scrapping.... people think I scrap pages for money too. lol

I guess I'm super lucky that my family and my friends "get it". My friends all scrap and they get that I do it on the computer versus with paper. They aren't getting any pages done because their kids are 3 and 4, but I get lots done because I don't have a mess to pick up (well beyond my hybrid mess).

My family gets that I make each page, especially for them (on their calendars) and that it's time consuming because I'm always at my computer.

Now my co-works, they have no clue and really don't care. They know I make cute little hybrid gifts for them, but none of them are crafty enough to do the same. he,he

However, with all that being said. Yeah...I'd be really frustrated if someone didn't get what I did and how time consuming it was. I explained it to my mom once that I make my own custom Shutterfly books and calendars, but if she wants to do it they have templates - that helped her a lot.

Annoys me too! When I was trying to build a S4O business... digital was way over their head... they would look at me and say that they do that at Walmart or Shutterfly for $ and the outrage that I'd charge $$ for my pages... yet I was way below the industry standard!

I get this too. The problem I have, my SIL and her family paper scrapbook. Our MIL has a program that lets her add photos and titles to pre-made pages and frames. Everyone thinks what I do is like what my MIL does and is not "real" scrapbooking. :eyeroll: Heck, I even consider what my MIL does as scrapbooking. I told her she was going hybrid. :) She added rickrack and a sticker title to one of her pages after she printed it out.
