Designs for "Chair" Auction?

My son's school is going to have a small auction to raise money to renovate the school auditorium. They are going to have each class decorate an old chair for auction. Has anyone done this type of thing? Do you have any ideas? Thanks!

Are you all set on making chairs? We have small individual projects and also a class project. And, if your school is agreeable, you can sell tiles(we sold them for $10/tile). Then, set up days when the kids could come in and paint them. We fired them and a mural was created for outside our school office(although any wall would do).

I actually bought a chair from a school's chair (silent) auction last year - it has a kid-drawn (obviously very whimsical) bridge, water, forest, etc - as the town's motto is City of Bridges. There was also an American theme, presidential theme (that had President Obama's signature on it, from when he was speaking at the Iowa caucus), There was one with a mardi gras/jester, one with nursery rhyme characters, etc

Check out Land of Nod - they often have whimsical ideas and furniture for ideas/inspiration.
