So I've been concerned that new kitty does not appear to be using litterbox.

Today discover that kitty has used behind the entertainment center as litterbox. :cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing:
The entertainment center is big and heavy. I don't know how I'm going to get back there to clean. I managed to vacuum up the poops with help of vacuum hose. However if kitty peed there . . ..

anyway, I'm thinking that perhaps the real litterbox was not private enough for kitty. So I tried making it more private and showed her. But will she go there now? Or is she going to be going behind the entertainment center again :(? well maybe stench of her own pee and whatever poop bits I couldn't get at will get her to find new spot. hope it's not a closet.

am feeling very ticked with DH who was today muttering about house not being clean enough. oh yeah . . . so very good idea to add to my workload. :cursing::thumbdown::mad:

I don't have cats (I'm allergic to them) but I have heard that you have to catch them when they're preparing to go somewhere they shouldn't and carry them to the litterbox. Repeatedly.

in my experience cats didnt really need housetraining. They do sometimes not use their litterbox but for the most part they will go without being showed. Locate the box somewhere where the cat is comfortable and most of the time they will go on their own. Since it is a new cat though in a new house it might just be stressed and a little scared and might take a few days to get used to the new home.

NOT what I wanted to hear :glare:
i thought i was done with potty training :crying:

i have no freaking idea if the cat is going off to play somewhere or poop. but now I shall at least try to keep her away from behind entertainment center. oh joy.

will hold this over DH's head for a very loooooong time.

this gives me hope. 10q

Oh no! We had two kitty cats shortly after we got married that started doing the exact same thing behind our entertainment center. It was SO gross! About that time we found out we were expecting Kaylie and since I could no longer clean the litter box (and DH wouldn't do it) they just went to a new home. So I have no idea how to keep them from doing it though :(

Maybe you could put the litterbox back there? LOL! You'd have to bring it out further from the wall, obviously...but it probably likes it back there because it's warm and cozy, not in the open.

SO not going to happen!

Shawna, BOTH cats did it? :::shudder:::

I read this online, its worth a try :)

I potty trained my present cat by having it first stay in my spare bathroom. When the kitten poo - I scoped some of the poo and placed it on the litter box. I did the same with the pee.

I cleaned thoroughly the spot where the kitten made her pee and poo so as to remove completely the smell.

after several tries, the kitten finally realized that the litter pan was the place for her waste!!

^^^ That's how we potty trained all our cats (through my life) we put their poo in their box after they did it and then put the cat in there so it could see the poo in there. It only took a few times..

When my cat was a baby, he kept going to the same spot over and over (which was under my big huge paper rack... cat pee is not acid free, I"m quite sure LOL!) Anyway, I went to the pet store and bought some super duper pee-smell remover stuff (I'm sure that's the brand name) because I'd read that if they can still smell it, they think that's where they need to go. So I sprayed the heck out of that spot, and then I covered it in tin foil (they hate the feel of walking on the stuff apparently so they won't go on it).

also, my cat didn't like the litter box cause I bought one that had a cover on it. He would NOT go in with the cover. Once I removed that, he was fine with going in there.

Good luck! Contrary to Manda's beliefs, kitties are a WONDERFUL addition to any family. :D

My cats didn't like a covered box when they were inside either. I don't remember much about training Raleigh because that was almost 4 years ago. But with Pogue, I kept her in the bathroom with her box in there for several days. I also had to do this to get Raleigh used to her. Then when it was time for her to come out, I just picked her up and put her in the new box a couple of times, and she got the hang of it.

I never had to train my cats when they were little, just had to show them where the box was which was usually out of the way since they like privacy. Hmmm...it might just be nervous, I really don't know. Funny thing is even though mine are outdoor now, we still have to keep a box in the garage b/c they were raised with one and can't use to good ol' outdoors.

Mimi - you need to clean that spot really well with a cleaner that has enzymes specifically for getting the urine and poo smells out. If you don't, they kitten will continue to use that spot.

You need to make sure the litter box is clean at all times. Cats are very finicky and will not go if it's dirty. While training, you may need to put the kitten in there to potty so that it learns where her toilet is. You also need to make sure the litter box is accessible. Some people put their boxes in the bathroom which is fine IF the door remains open for the cat to get in there. Cats don't want to "wait in line" for the potty.

You also need to feed the kitten at regular intervals while she's young. That way you can figure out when she needs to go. When she does go in the litter box, give her loves and tell her "good kitty." This will reinforce her to go there next time.

If your kitten continues to go in undesired places, you may have to confine her to one room so that she will learn. But, this is usually the last resort.

Another thing that you have to pay attention to is that she's not disturbed when she finally goes to the litter box (Do you hear me, kids???? NOT DISTURBED!!! LOL).

When you first welcome a kitten in the house, it's better to keep it in one single room where it'll have the litter box afterwards, so that it can slowly get used to the new place and the litter and everything. Then, starting from this territory which is its own (and makes it feels secure), it can explore the rest of the house one room after the other. That's what we did with our kittens and had no trouble at all... until they become adults and start peeing everywhere to say "this house is all mine"... Okay, back to the kitchen you go! LOL

Oh! Thanks for the tips about getting the smell out - one of my cats consistently pees on the tile floor BESIDE the litter box, it dirves me crazy - I keep mopping and she keeps peeing. I was thinking about getting one of those pet pee-pee pads and putting it there but then thought that might incourage it more. I'll try the pee odoremover and tin foil!!!

Mimi - I agree. Get some enzyme cleaner from the pet store. Spray it the best you can back there after cleaning (maybe put a rag on the back of the broom handle).

Then put her box either at the entrance of the entertainment center since that's where she likes to go (making sure you put a little of her poo there), and watch her when she eats. Cats tend to go potty after they've eaten, so it's a good time to just walk her to it, help her inside, and then let her be. She'll figure it out. We usually just did it one or two times during the day, the first couple of days, just as a reminder. We still have the occasional poo'cident but for the most part, she's a trooper.

I also agree with Chloe, make sure the kids leave the kitty alone when she's trying to do her business. It can make them really nervous and go hide somewhere to do it instead. It did take my youngest a little while to get over that particular fascination.

most cats use the litterbox on their own, but i too have had problems with cats occasionally going where they are not supposed too. like everyone is saying, go to petco or petsmart and they have the odor removing stuff. I bought some once that was $30 a gallon. it worked pretty good. i sprayed it all over the carpet, let it sit and then shampooed it. once its dry i sprinkled some of that arm and hammer carpet deodorizer over it for good measure, let that sit and then vacuumed the heck out of it, lol. I love that deoderizer, lol.

good luck. everyone has good ideas about how to get her to use the litterbox.

Mimi, if that spot is too hard to get to in order to clean it with the enzyme stuff, put a ton of baking soda over that area and cover it with tin foil.

I too kept my kitties in the smaller room while they were training, letting them out to play and such while keeping a good eye on them and anytime they went behind anything private scaring them a bit to get them to run out. Then putting them in the room where the litter box was, and actually putting them in the litter box. I have always kept my litter boxes in the bathroom so I can scoop the poops out right away so that being a small room worked. :)

Good luck and I'm sure ones the wee one gets the hang of it all will be fine!

thanks for the tips, everyone!

i'm feeling nervous now. kitty just ate and I don't know where she went (and if she "went" IFYKIM).

ah Meems! Good luck with the potty training! We never had an experience like this and we have 3 cats! LOL, we just thru them in the litter box , they dug around and finally peed , its been smooth sailing ever since....cats are wonderful little pets, she'll get the hang of it!

One really good product you can use to get the smell out is called Nature's miracle. It is true that you need to get the enzymes out so that they won't smell it and go again. Good luck!! I know that's a hard thing to deal with.
