So. scissors. glue. those sorts of things and I are not bffs. at all. we fight, I bleed, it's a bad mess.

Kiddo needs to make a model of a hyena (seriously?!) and I don't even know where to start. Styrofoam? Cardboard? Clay? chicken wire lol.. wth do I do ^__^

I've been googling and the best I've found is how to draw a hyena which is usefull and all.. but :p yeh.

I am definitely not in the "art" group so someone might give you a better answer.

I would say clay would probably be easier than the other substances because it will be easier to mold into the shape you want. If it were me, I would say to model the clay sort of following the drawing directions you posted (you would just be making it in 3D).

Does your son have an idea of how he would like to go about it? Sometimes the kids have an idea and you just need to support them in it.

I've picked up the clay at Target/ToysRUs and my nephew was able to work with it well.
 
I've asked him what his plan was and he drew a stick figure hyena with claws and said.. Let's make this! hahaha. Thanks dude. really.
 
As another non-crafty person, I second the suggestion for clay. And yes, the project is stupid! My kids' teachers are usually good about assigning projects that are really for them to do instead of the parents, but I've been warned there's a 3-D map of the state (showing mountains, etc) coming up that we need to do in air-drying clay. Good times, I'm sure.
 
I second the Model Magic. we have made whales and manatees out of that stuff for two projects and it's good to work with. Just be careful not to have parts that are too thin or it can break once it dries.

model magic, or go to hobby lobby and get some clay. Form balls like the drawing, then smooth them together like it does. You can paint it and bake it. if you cut into the clay you can create a fur look. :) (like little snips into the top of it to give a line of fur along the top edge.)
 
omg that is seriously the most difficult craft challenge i can imagine!! I would probably try styrofoam balls, either that or just making the kid figure out what to use and just try to be helpful-ish...
 
OH, you could use like a soda bottle, one of the plastic ones that is like 20 oz or so for the bottle... then hot glue on some straws for legs... and a ball for a head?
 
We (I) ended up using that crayola air drying clay stuff.. In terracotta colour.. which is important to note.. because my hands were covered in it. That stuff is evil! I made him really small, and I feel bad now because I saw a couple other animals other kids brought in and they were these giant cardboard things (but really. a zebra, is 1000x easier to make than a stupid hyena. as long as it's striped you know it's a zebra :p ) I forgot to take a pic of it and then Connor brought it to school and left it there :p If it ever makes it home I will show you my masterpiece.. LOL however, I've been informed it's already been broken twice :p the tail, some of it's spikey fur, and one of his legs have already been damaged :p children. lol (not him, he did a presentation for a group of Kindy & 1st graders and they insisted on feeling up mr hyena :p )
 
haha... my first thought was form the body out of wire and cover with paper mache... of course I'm one to make it worse than it needs to be... haha
