Computer/Software questions...

Okay..I need some help.

We're discussing getting me a new computer. This laptop is nearly 4 years old and well, you know..just getting time to upgrade.

Here's my question..what would you do?

I use PSPx2 and have used psp since version 8. I love to scrap with it and the thought of learning a new program really just gives me a headache..but...I'm getting more into photography and PSP just won't let me edit my photos like I want to kwim...soo should I go ahead and get CS4 on my new computer and bite the bullet to learn it or should I just keep PSP and add Lightroom to my new PC?

I don't know which one I want lol

Oh you'll love Photoshop...I haven't got CS4 - I'm only at CS3, but it does sooo much, and you can work with RAW and do post-processing with CS3 too....I bought Scott Kelby's book on how to do post-processing in CS3 and I love it. Now if I had more time to play with it....

I haven't ever played with PSP but from what I've heard it can be a stiff learning curve switching to PSCS4....maybe someone who's done it can tell you more.

it was a pretty steep learning curve for me when I went from PS Elements to PSCS2, but I'd say within a week I was able to feel comfortable with it. I think you will catch on quick and of course we'd all help! I'd say go with CS4 for your new computer! Yay for you! :)

Nikki, I think you would catch on to CS4 rather quickly. That said though, if you love PSP, putting that and Lightroom on the new computer would work just as well. If I hadn't switched to CS2 a couple years back, I'd be more than content with PSP and LR. I don't edit many of my photos in CS4--there's a rare tweak of my LR edits, but that's it.

Can the laptop you're using handle a trial of CS4 and LR? See if you think it's something you'd like before you shell out $$$$ for it??

I have PSE6, CS3 and Lightroom and I do the majority of my editing in LR because for me it's so much faster and I love the ease of using presets over actions in PS. I do like to play around with actions in CS3 though, but I couldn't live without my LR! And when I scrap I still use my PSE6 most of the time cause I'm just so used to it by now. So I'm really no help lol :)

I use PSP since version... I lost my counting. LOL
I use Lightroom too. Both are working fine here.
I have PSCS3 installed too; only b/c of text path function. But I can't get used to it. I didn't try that hard, though. The thing is: I'm too comfortable with PSP. :)
This new version of PSP (Ultimate) supports raw format.

psp to photoshop CS was easy peasy for me. PS CS to pse was a pain in the ass hahaha (I had to downgrade in order to upgrade illustrator.. tyvm crapfastic computer ^_^ ) but anyway.. my point is.. don't be intimidated. I didn't like CS4 at all (I fiddled with the trial) .. so if possible maybe try to get ahold of one of the older photoshop versions as imo they are easier to transition to from psp.. but.. otherwise.. go for it.

I recommend getting PS! You really can't beat the editing capabilities. LR is great too (I have it as well). If I had to choose between PS and PSP/LR, I'd definitely choose PS. It took me about a week to completely convert from PSP to PS, but I just forced myself not to revert back. It does take a bit of patience :)

I have both photoshop and lightroom, and although I like lightroom, I tend to use PS the most for editing. But that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I don't really know how to use lightroom properly;)

I usually finish a photo off in PS even though I have edited it in lightroom though, so if I had to choose I'd go with PS. I have never used PSP so I don't know how the learning curve would be, but there is a lot of good tutorials and videos online.

I tried to help a frien use PSE and was CLUELESS...I think you should go fro CS and don't think you will have any trouble converting...I downloaded a trial of lightroom but didn't play with it much so I don't have much experience there...

I started out digi scrapping with PSP X and loved it. But, when I switched to Mac, I couldn't run PSP X on my computer. I bit the bullet and got CS3 and I have never looked back! I totally LOVE it and Sarah's actions for photos are the BEST!! Way better than Lightroom!!
