Maybe you'll know...

You know I have the D80. Last weekend I was trying to take some pics and all of a sudden I am getting and Err next to the ISO in the viewfinder and on the top of the camera as well. I called Ritz but they couldn't tell what it was over the phone since there was no number next to the Error.

Any ideas? The camera worked fine on Turkey Day. I even used the timer. Now if you depress the shutter half way it gives you the error and trying to take an actual picture results in a black screen. :(

Hmmm....can you get into the menu's? Have you switched the lens at all since you last used it? Is the lens cap on? (Seriously, I've done that before, lol!)

Yeah, I can access the menus. No the lens cap isn't on.... hahaha

I even tried a different card just to make sure that wasn't it... DH is PISSED b/c this camera isn't working. Especially at Christmas time. :(

Well let's see. What is your ISO set to? Auto? Trying setting it to something different than what it's on. I'd also try taking the lens off, and putting it or another one back on. It sounds like the camera isn't recognizing something with the lens. So it's not triggering the shutter, so it's not letting any light in, thus the black photo. Make sure that the settings on the lens are right too (there's that little switch for manual vs auto focus, and sometimes there's another one, maybe it got nudged in the middle and it's messing wtih the lens?).

If that doesn't work, I would try restoring it to factory default and trying again.

:( ISO auto. i tried other modes. still nothing. I think the shutter is getting stuck.... I have to press the shutter twice to get a "black" pic. It's also making a double beep when trying to AF.

I guess I'm going to have to take it in to the shop... :( I was really hoping I just messed up a setting.

I did a reformat and also a hard reset and neither are working.

It might be giving me a r09 code but I can't tell if that's a code or something else. i googled it on the Nikon site and nothing came up.

Well the manual says an Err flashing means camera malfunction and to contact an authorized service dealer. GREAT.... :(

No good Kat, I'm sorry :( Better to take in to get looked at hopefully get it back for Christmas day.

I know you said you changed memory cards, but I was getting the err message on my D80 with 2 different cards. Somewhere I read that deleting the pictures off the card on your computer isn't the same as doing a format memory card on the camera menu. I did the actual formats and the error went away. However, I wasn't getting black photos like you were - that sounds like something with the shutter :( Hope its a quick fix

Well, my camera is enoute to the doctor..... :(

I had dropped it (in its case) in September and broke my 18-55 lens. But I had bought a new lens and it worked fine. Well, apparently a piece of plastic off of the broken lens was stuck inside the body and after the mirror opening and closing over it for a period of time, it seems to have damaged the mirror. So, the guy at Ritz was SUPER nice and is going to try to get Nikon to cover it under warranty. I am not getting my hopes up though. I fully expect this to cost at least $300 to fix. :(

So, now I need to find a place where I can rent a D80 or D90 body for Christmas so I can take pics. Although my friend did tell me that she thinks her DH may have a Rebel tucked away that never gets used (he passed away a couple of months ago) and is willing to lend it to me if she can find it.

Ugh, that sucks Kat!! I'm so sorry.

I rented some lenses from lensprotogo.com and had great success with them. They do bodies too. I've also heard positive things about borrowlenses.com.
