Christmas trees and... cats

I've forgotten how crazy my cat gets every year when the tree goes up.

She is currently UNDER the tree skirt.

My parents adopted 2 cats this spring/summer. One is older, and the other is a kitten. The kitten is SUCH a jerkface that they pretty much can't decorate for Christmas at all. He's destroyed too many things for my mom to put out most of her treasured stuff. He most recently knocked a gorgeous wood clock off the wall.

They put the (fake) tree up early this year to try and get the cats used to it. But none of the usual ornaments are on it, and my mom is so sad. Hopefully by next Christmas the kitteh will have calmed down some, lol.

ETA: We had 2 cats growing up, and neither one of them was particularly interested in the tree. So strange, lol.

This is the first year our cats haven't been crazy over the tree. They do try to get the ornaments that have strings rather than the wire hangers (they eat strings) but we don't have too many left.

I hate cats. Why do I have three of them?

Yeah, most of my breakables are already broken from previous years of my dog swishing her tail and knocking them off. My keepsake ones stay at the very tip top and, since ours is artifical, I bend the end of the stem around the hooks so they're quite secure.

My cats don't seem to care about the Tree at all....However I can't seem to get them to stop clawing at my new dining room chairs!!!!!! Any tips or sprays or something to keep them away from them?

OMGosh my cats are soooo bad!! I did a layout with a photo I took of my cat this past christmas. Everytime I would look at her she would stop messing with the tree LOL

Well, I didn't realize till a couple years ago that not every area of the country agrees with declawing cats. EVERYONE where I live (Mi) declaws their indoor cats, almost w/o exception. Only the front ones, never the back. But my sister lives in Chicago (and so does Mimi, aka. Meems here at SSD) and they think it's totally inhumane.

So my only advice is declawing them, lol! I've seen those things at the petstore that cats scratch and it files their nails. Hold on...

Oh, I guess I never told you we declawed our cat. Because she is a vicious beast and when my endo saw the huge scratch on my arm he got all concerned & said that if it had gotten infected I would have ended up in the hospital. So we got her declawed & spayed at the same time. I still feel a bit guilty about it though.

As for the tree, 2 years ago, Miffy couldn't leave the tree alone and basically ruined it so last year we didn't even have a tree. I plan on getting one this year though (fake). I'm a kind of worried.

Our cat used to climb our artificial tree - to the top! Once we moved to a place we could let her go outside she pretty much ignores it since she's able to climb the big trees outside. She does sleep under it, though, even under the skirt sometimes.

It's our new dog I'm more concerned about this year. I have a feeling some of the ornaments are going to look like his chew toys :(

my cats never destroyed the tree, they would just lay underneath it(on the tree skirt) and watch the lights and eat the tinsel.

LOL it was so funny. I kept hearing this swatting sound and it sounded like the ornaments getting hit on the tree so I would look over and she was there but not doing anything so I would start doing what I was doing and she would start again. I was not ever able to get a picture of her hitting the ornaments.

LOL! She looks like she's guarding the tree, ha!

The first year dh and I were married our cats chased each other up the tree and knocked the whole thing over. broken ornaments and water EVERYWHERE.

:cursing:

yep. my cats like to climb it. Bella almost made it to the top the other day lol. i have a water bottle that i point at them when they are in it; i dont even have to squirt it. their eyes get all big and blinky then they run and hide mauhahahaha!

i think they are learning though; i haven't had to yell at them much this year.
