This is a tough age in general. If he's social what about gift cards to go out with friends like to the movies, the mall (food court), Starbucks?
Does he like sports? What about tickets to a minor league hockey game or another sporting event he might like? Of course then you have to give him two so he can either take a friend or parent.
Clothes - Aeropostle, Hollister, American Eagle are all cool here in that age range. A sweatshirt or pull over fleece.
Gift card for video games or Playstaion/Xbox/Wii online to get games. iTunes gift card or Google Play depending on what kind of devices he has.

My son is 11 and he's a total nerd. He asked for an snes/ console to play old games he loves and games for his XBOX they don't have to be new games that have just been released. I got him 3 that are older releases but he would lave to have.
B&N gift card b/c he LOVES to read.

Sneakers, we'll go to the mall and let him pick his own.
