Chicken pox?? **UPDATE pg 2**

Who here knows a thing or two about chicken pox?

Last Tuesday I was at a friends, who has 2 little boys. On Thursday Eli (the older) came down with chicken pox, and now the younger one has (about 4 days later). Soooooooo.... my little girl who in not quite 8 months old was in contact with them 2 days before they broke out.

Can she get it? They would have had the bug, just hadn't broke out yet... I really hope she doesn't get it! I know she's been immunized against German Measles, but I don't think against chicken pox! I'm so worried! At least they aren't too serious... just annoying & itchy.

My friend feels just awful that she exposed Avalynne to them, but really, how could she know? Its just one of those things. She doesn't even know where HER boys came into contact with it (they are only 3 & 1/5 years old), they don't go to school, daycare or pre-school.

I don't think they get immunized for chicken pox until 1 year? Just watch her for signs of it, that's all you can do. Hope she doesn't get it, though! :(
 
I know about this.

She hasn't had the vaccine, you can't get the vaccine until age 1. I'm pretty passionate about this because it happened to me. A classmate of Nathan's had it and she was over to play...of course we didn't know she had it yet...two days later her mom called and told me she had come down with CP.

Well Naomi was 11 weeks old. And yep, 2 weeks later she came down with the CP. And it was AWFUL. Can you imagine a baby that small with CP? She was a teeny tiny preemie too. She was about 7 lbs when she had them. I shudder just remembering it.

To top it off, she caught a secondary virus from it and ended up with 5ths disease at age 13 weeks, as soon as she was over the CP.

The only good thing of it was that it's over and she didn't need the vaccine at age 1. Nathan had had the vaccine and his vaccine worked b/c he never got it from Naomi or the classmate.

I'm sorry but your little girl will probably have them :(
 
Yes, Lena is right, unfortunately you can get CP from a kid who hasn't broken out in the rash yet. It's very contagious. Having had CP as an adult, and knowing how miserable that disease is, I actually am an advocate of the vaccination.
 
Well DAMMIT! I thought that she was likely to get them! Aaaaaaaargh! LOL... sighhhhhhhhhhh. She's got a pediatrician appt on Thursday, so I can ask him a million questions as well. At least I have a heads up. Now off to research chicken pox & small babies (I feel like crying...).
 
Well you need to consider not going to the Ped appt. There will be other small babies there who haven't been vaccinated and she could give them now. From the moment we knew she had been exposed we didn't leave the house with her until she was over them. It was two weeks before she broke out. :(
 
Unfortunately she will probably get them.

I am an advocate for the vaccination because having CP can lead to problems later in life, i.e. shingles - which are so much worse!
 
YEP...she will get it for sure, chances are!!!! All my kids have had the shot...it is actually a requirement to enter Kindergarten here in IL!!! My Doc told me that they should actually have 2 doses of it depending on when they got their first one!!!!! I would def call your Doc and tell them that she was exposed though......I am sorry and hope it is not too bad for her!!!!

P.S. My oldest had 5ths Disease AFTER he had the CP vaccination !!!!
 
Well I just called the pediatric dept and asked if I should cancel my appointment. The receptionist told me that I didn't have to, and to bring her anyways. Avalynne is going to see a pediatric surgeon for her belly button hernia, and since the appointment is in the hospital, she said that people go in and out with far worse things than chicken pox, lol. So the appointment is still on, which is good because its been booked for 2 months.
 
Our ped usually brings in contagious children through the back so they don't infect others. CP stinks, but at least she won't remember them (trying to find a bright side). There is a possibility your ped could offer the vaccination before 1 year to lessen the potential symptoms. {{HUGS}}
 
There may be a shred of hope because you nursed. Most babies keep mom's immunities until about 6 months though...so she a little bit past that. Fingers are crossed for no little spots!!
 
There is also the possibility that she may never get them!! My mother has been exposed I can't even count how many times in her lifetime and she has never gotten them.

I'm sure when you go to the appointment they'll put you in a room right away so that the other patients aren't exposed. My dd was exposed the CP around 9 months and while some of the other kids who were exposed at the same time got the CP, my dd didn't. Some people are just immune to the CP (my hubby is) but I think it's wise to get immunized as soon as possible because the older you get the worse it gets.
 
I have a worst case scenario for you, unfortunately. When my, now 21 yr old, son was 8 months old he contracted CP along with me, and he had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks because he had complication ie: CP on his eyeball the very nasty varicella pneumonia. He was a very sick little boy and and has had respiratory problems ever since. The thing is, when we took him to the ER it was because of the CP on his eyeball, the pneumonia was just beginning to set in and progresses quite rapidly.

So I would highly recommend having her checked again if she does indeed come down with CP.
 
I have an update! Its not chicken pox!!! YAYYYY! Claire (my friend) took Eli into the doctor because he got more spots, after most of them had gone away. The doctor said that they weren't pox. Claire started thinking about it, wondering what else it could be, and she's pretty sure he's having an allergic reaction. They have a huge plum tree, and Eli has been eating plums like crazy in the last week. Just after he ate a whole bunch, he broke out in spots... AND I *thought* she had said that Jack (the younger son) had broke out too, but she had said that he HADN'T.

Yippee!!! No chicken pox for my little one! Woohoo!
 
I got the chicken pox as an adult. SO. NOT. FUN! It was downright brutal! :cursing:

Anyway, yeah, I did my share of research at the time, and you are apparently most contagious in those couple of days just before you break out. It looks like you've already had that confirmed for you but, yeah, she most likely is going to get them. Unless she's freakishly lucky like my hubby and my nephew who are both immune.

EDIT: Nm, just saw your update! Pheew, what a relief for you! My niece got them as a baby and it wasn't bad at all, mind you. She was over them really quickly without too much fuss. Getting them as an adult is quite another matter. Wipes you out for days, and the pox took ages to go away on me. You're contagious until the last one heals over too... yeah, that was good times. :rolleyes:

Good news it wasn't chicken pox! I'll share my story anyway. ;)

When my oldest was 3, he got CP. He proceeded to infect his 25 year old uncle, his uncle's 25 yo best friend, his 3 yo cousin, and his 9 month old brother (Wyatt). The 2 men had a horrible time with them. Wyatt had a very mild case. My pediatrician had told me to call them the moment we thought he had them and they would prescribe something that would lessen the severity. I remember bathing him and seeing a spot and calling the dr. at night and rushing to get his prescription and it did help a ton. (sorry, I don't remember what it was) This happened to be 1994, the first year the CP vaccine was available, but Wyatt was too young.

Fast forward to last year and the pediatrician decided that since Wyatt had the CP before he was 1 year old and it was a mild case, he had to have the vaccine anyway. He just got his booster shot this past summer and yes, it's required here for school.
 
huge sigh of relief that the Princess has been spared this time.

All four of my kiddos were immunized two years ago ... yes, Cody made it to 11 without ever having gotten them, despite being exposed to pre-outbreaks. So the doctors recommended when I took Jenna and Xander in for their immunizations, that Cody also get it.
 
I know your scare is over, but just had to add my thoughts...

When I was a baby, I got CP when I was about 6 months at the same time all my siblings, family friends, etc had them. Well evidentally it was not enough to build my immunity because I got CP again when i was about 8. And then my brother got them and ended up with Bell's Palsy afterwards. That is a condition where half of your face paralyzes for awhile - and they say it may come back later in his life. That was before they started the vaccine.
